About Bag Stranding:

Have you ever wondered how adventurers in RPGs manage to carry so much stuff? Now you can find out in Bag Stranding! This game is like a super-short Death Stranding in 2D with hilariously unrealistic physics and unique game mechanics.

This game was made in 48 hours for Ludum Dare 53 (theme "Delivery") for The Compo.

Bag Stranding - Wobbling.gif

Features:

  • Carry a totally reasonable number of backpacks (6!)
  • Enjoy perfect weather (you like rain, right?.. right?)
  • Pick flowers! Harvest mushrooms! Gather crystals! Befriend boulders!
  • Experience ROCK(et)-jumping!
  • Discover a breathtaking ending (not the one where you get stuck under the bridge – that's a secret one for pros)
  • Engage in bag stranding, standing, strangling, and even straining!
  • Encounter the same mysterious NPC who always pretends to be someone else
  • Meet the enchanting Fairy with her adorable voice!
  • Break the game! Indulge in legal cheating!
  • Hump walls! Who needs bridges, am I right?
  • Last but not least – make deliveries! Whether it's mushrooms, rocks, or suspicious potions found in a pile of bones, you'll deliver it all!

full game 2.png

Change log:

  • Fixed several softlocks that prevented player from progressing and completing the game (moved a few obstacles a bit and changed a few parameters to correct values)
  • Fixed a bug that sometimes prevented mouse from picking items forever (happened after giving items to NPCs with a small chance)

Play the game:

I recommend playing Windows Standalone Build for best experience, immersion and sound quality, but you can also play the game in embedded web version (on the top of this page) or here. Playing with sounds is strongly recommended.

What if death stranding was 2D...

What I liked
- Multiple items incentive
- The actual forces applied to the boxes are cool
- Graphics are spot on for Death Stranding spinoff
- I love developer voiceover in effects, shows dedication
- I like that, in the end, I could move almost everywhere even when overencumbered by jumping

Of course you could fit as much as possible in a single box until it starts popping out. It's a little bit too long IMO but hey, it's the Death Stranding magic :sparkles: Great job!

Question: where did you get the rain effect? Have you recorded it actually?

Nice submission, loved the idea and it's easy to understand with the in-game tutorial. I got scared at first when it said "Bring 50 rocks" but releaved when it increased by 10 x)

I got a little frustrated by the movement speed, it could be higher. Also, the backpacks physics is fun but it's disturbing that it does not affect the character's movements.

Very much enjoyed the item collecting in this game, very chill gameplay loop! Also loved how droopy my bag would get xD

Hi there! I really like your game - it looks fun and nice to play!

Unfortunately I faced a bug connected with building bridge(

@unkilledshadow135-alex it's a secret ending for pros (read the description) :D
But seriously – yeah, I know it can happen, but I didn't have a fast solution, I barely managed to finish the level, and I still wanted to have at least one bridge builder in the game, so I left it as is

I haven't played "Death stranding", but I'm sure this game is better! Especially the voice acting - just like in "Samorost"

this game was a really peaceful and cool experience! i loved the simple art style of the different plants and mushrooms!

the mechanic is cool, but you can force jump many walls even with a loaded backpack. i loved having to collect things just in case. only downside was that it was a bit hard to distinguish potions from plants, as sometimes i just realized that i had that potion in my bag while i was looking for its ingredients.

really great compo game, congrats!

That felt really good to play, the boxes bouncing left and right are really nice. I think it's a bit confusing that it says a big amount of rocks needed but each rock counts as more than 1, also got stuck at 2 potions.

That said, I really like the game, I like that it's up to the player to use the many boxes to manage his inventory.

It's fun and atmospheric, great job!

I really loove this game, very interesting concept! I would like the knight to run faster, and often there is a bug with boxes, they get stuck in each other and in objects, its sad( Anyway tutorial is understandable, game is pretty easy and pleasant to play and to understand my purpose! One of the best games I've played on Ludum <3

I think I enjoyed this more than death stranding! I love just moving the boxes around with different amounts of weight in then - very satisfying!

I LOVE this game! Fun physics is my type of mechanic. The introduction/tutorial to the mechanics was very well done, as are the sounds and the physics of the bag pack. The only thing I could say is that the walking speed was a bit slow. All in all, you made an amazing and fun game, very well done!
Also, if you like me, fill the bags up with stones you end up in a f*ck up like this:
![Unbenanntes Bild.png](///raw/1b1/c2/z/5aa9b.png)
But again, my fault. I just could not resist in picking up all stones lol

What a creative concept! I really appreciate how the physics of the bags actually matter in reaching the goals.

Unfortunately, I encountered a couple problems that prevented me from completing the game. Two of my bags were permanently stuck together, leaning left, which got in the way of climbing the cliff to the far left. I also tried grabbing one of the purple crystals, but it seems to have disappeared out of my "hand". I don't know if there were spares, since i couldn't go further left, but it might be another soft lock.

Bugs aside, this is really good for a compo game! I especially liked the aesthetic.

@stuembi yeah, such "backpack tangles" are the part of the experience ;) If I had more time, I'd come to some solution for fixing it somehow, but it's still very funny to have it as is

Funny physics and concept! The end made me laugh, I wasn't expecting so much colors . It takes me a few minutes to understand how to pick mushrooms. I was simply clicking on it or dragging it slowly.

Love the seamlessness of the inventory system, which we did NOT nail in our entry. Funky box physics were fun and there is an odd satisfaction to just picking everything and plunking it into your backpack. A little dark on the lighting with the ever-present rain, but fits the source material. I appreciate the from-scratch assets, including sounds! Though the "task complete" sound seems a little like something else was happening under the dev's desk.

very fun! i love physics applied to games, and stacking backpacks that you can fill is novel and interesting. I like that you apply physics to the mouse cursor when you pick up items, yeeting boulders to lord knows where is satisfying :) your UI design and implementation for mousing over packs, etc is intuitive and feels good. great job
Also I worked out a stable storage solution by walking into walls, lol :

You should take it a bit further and use the mechanic for something more than just a fancy inventory. Make it so the top boxes are almost 100% stable when empty but will tip over when you put something heavy in them. (you can probably hardcode this behaviour) And when one box touches the ground, the character can't move at all (like he is anchored) but also you need to keep a few things for later and transport new things for missions. The Backpack could also fit things like seet and when you plant it, some flower that gives a jump boost spawns where the seet was dropped. Or like the original - ladders, bridges. Bringe the constructor stones and get a transportable bridge that you can place. Ropes, maybe even battery-cells to power up some locked doors.

I feel like it definitely needs

- penality for tipping over (and thus wasting time or damaging package content or the backpack itself)
- a quick way to leave entire boxes (with all their content) behind
- some kind of missions
- Maybe upgrades so you unlock greater jump height, walk speed, stability, a monk that produces batteries, ladders, ..

As you can see from all my ideas, I enjoyed it. ^^

I agree with leorid - this game was really unique, and with some puzzle mechanics it would be amazing - other than that, I really liked the backpack physics, and the art style fit the game really well!

Absolutely great game, made so much fun playing it.PLaying as the stompy character with the simple but very nice pixel death stranding mood fitted the gameplay very nicely.
walking a bitter faster would be more enjoyable but overall absolut great and fun game! :)

LOL this is hilarious, loved it! I think there's a little too much backtracking and walking for my liking though. The box physics was very creative, I like how it tends to 'spring back' into place. I also liked how you had some physics puzzles in there too. Sound effects were amazing :p
