Drone Delivery by uNclear Physicist

[raw]
made by uNclear Physicist for Ludum Dare 53 (JAM)

A first game jam attempt by uNclearPhysicist and Cixsixcix. Made in Godot 3.5.2 (neither of us had ever used any game engine before last week).

Collect and deliver packages by drone. Swoop down to collect red, blue or green packages. Deliver them to a matching red, blue or green building to score a point. Avoid the buildings and the ground, as crashing into either will result in game over. Try to set the highest score you can!

Just simple and funny flappy-bird-like game with delivery mechanics. Not so cool, not so bad. Strong average

The graphics and audio were quite OK. I found the controls very difficult (eg. I always crashed the drone). I think this flappy bird idea could work though if mistakes would be not punishing (eg. you would not die) and maybe some fun things would happen if you make a mistake...

Great simple concept, flappy-bird esque but you're required to get close to the buildings rather than avoid them entirely.

I think clearer indicator of what color the package is would be helpful. Keep in mind having a non-color indicator is valuable for games like this as an accessibility option as well.

Good job on your first game jam entry! Delivering the packages was quite tough, the best i got was 6 :O
The audio was decenet and it's amazing to me that you managed to include all the different screens and volume slider.
Well done!

It's fun and worth spending some time on.
But nothing new or outstanding. It's good, but not great.

Just a heads up, your Ludum Dare hosted version is returning a 404 :(

Cool flappy bird like game! Would have been great to see more of a thrust feel to the drone, than a jump. I like your menus and it feels polished. Great job!

Congrats on finishing your first Game Jam attempt. Flappy bird with another mechanic feels like a good smartphone Game. Good Job!

Great take on the theme, I love the idea! Maybe you should try to have more gentle collisions to make a bit more easy? Still, Solid and great game design! congrats!

Cool twist on the flappy bird genre. Awesome that you guys picked up learning a game engine in such a short amount of time. Godot was a great choice. Nice work!

Fun game that works. I missed the package one run and didn't get any colored buildings or packages for long enough that I died and reset. Not sure if this was rng or meant to happen.

This is brutally difficult! I like the diversification to the classic flappy formula here, but there's definitely opportunity for better communication with the player. I'm specifically thinking of the dropoff zone, it would be great to show where exactly that is! My first 20 or so attempts to deliver a package ended in death, because I thought you had to land on the building to deliver. Also, if you miss a package for pickup, it can be a very long time before you see another one. But hey, great first entry, and I hope you come back for more! :tada:

Thanks everyone for all the comments and feedback, much appreciated and will take on board for future jams, great job on all your games too!

@recyx Most of the menu screen layouts including the volume slider tool came from the code base I grabbed off jhlothamer's github, so fortunately most of the menu work was just linking up my game and game over scenes to that setup. Good job on getting a high score of 6, think my PB during testing was 8 or 9!

@adam-probert Oops, removed the LD embed until I can upload a working version. I feel the same about the thrust, wish I had more time to try out different flight mechanics.

@partysquadmember Upon a missed package leaving the left side of the screen a new one should spawn in on the right within a second or two, must've bugged out -__-

@bloodyaugust A drop-off zone indicator was the number one thing I wish I could've added in time, sadly started working on the game too late into the weekend and had to cut corners. Lesson learned for next time!

really cool idea! simple mechanic with the delivery twist. I think its a bit counter intuititive the deliver mechanic because you need to get too closer and this is something you always try to avoid? Also maybe a clearer sign to where the delivery would happen on the top of each building could be a cool tweaks. Regardless congratulations on the game!

Whoa this one is really hard, my best score is 4... I tend to like hard games but this one was a bit too unfair for my tastes... Also, nice art and music :)

Hey there! Really nice to see people trying Godot and having blast with it, stunning progress for just one week into the engine.

A game is quite simple, but it feels like a game, so it's a game

I had two problems with the gameplay:
1. It was not clear that you need to come close to the colored building to deliver the box, and not slide/land on it
2. After I missed one package I never got another one, and only an infinite line of empty grey rooftops awaited me...

Good luck with learning Godot!

Nice take on helicopter / Flappy Bird! As others mentioned, I didn't realize the box had a color on it for the building to deposit, but once I figured that out I was able to make good progress. Fun little game.

Nice game! I think you should let the drone slide on the building when you leave a package. Good job!

Well, I tried for some time, but didn't manage to drop off a single package ^^ Still, congrats for learning Godot in a week and successfully publish your first game!

This is an excellent first jam game - nice work on the successful release! And kudos to you guys for making a web version, too. This has some good solid mechanics and provides a decent challenge. It's tricky to swoop down and deliver packages without crashing into a wall, but definitely gets easier as you practice. I like the requirement to get low enough to pick up deliveries also. Definitely a solid jam game you guys have here - great job!

I thought it was really cool that none of you had worked with an engine before, and still managed to make a solid game, I found it really impressive. To improve the player experience, I think you could work on the collision system a bit, as I had some difficulty delivering the packages. It might also be interesting if the drone started on the ground or something like that. But overall, great job :D

This is a great game with a strong inspiration from Flappy Bird! I found it really challenging - it's tough to deliver the packages without crashing the drone. But congratulations on your first attempt at a game jam, and keep up the good work!(◕‿◕)♡

should probably be slightly easier to deliver packages without crashing
