Giggle Groove by badcop

[raw]
made by badcop for Ludum Dare 53 (COMPO)

Think you're funny? You'll have to time your jokes right for this crowd!

gg-screenshot1.png

Are you sick of rhythm games constantly syncing the beats to music instead of jokes? Then this is the game for you!

The game only requires 2 buttons to play. You can use any of these: * W / S * Arrow Up / Arrow Down * Q / A * I / J * Z / X * Xbox A / Xbox B * Generic Controller 0 / Generic Controller 1

Now get up there, and spread some laughs to the world!

Bug fixes: - fixed a soft lock on one of the jokes - added ctrl-R for quick restart

Well, turns out im not actuallly very funny :(

Very cool and innovative submission. I like how you incorporated actual jokes instead of gibbersih and included pauses for the punchline.

I like the preview thing that shows before the actual indicator of when you press the words, as it gives you a sense of the pacing and whatnot. Was surprised to try again and get new jokes! Audio work was very amusing.

One suggestion: Use the physical keys so I can use the W and S positions without switching layouts using a non-QWERTY layout.

Haha great one! I like the graphics and audio combination a lot. Even though I don't do well with these types of games, had to keep trying, it's somewhat addictive I have to admit.

Hey! I visted your stream for a little while! Just had a go at your entry and found it to be quite fast anfrom the get go but had a few more turns to leanr how to keep in time. I think its a good take on the theme and the gameplay suits it well!

This game's hard, but I love the concept. Now I found 2 people that dont just handle package deliveries  It's well done, but would have been nice if the voicelines would be better understandable. Could get even more complex by adding more buttons, but it's nice.

interesting game. i would have started off slow to allow us to get used to the mechanic. when it first started for me it was so fast. and for some luck there was a really slow robot that felt good. could have started with that to get things going, then ramped up the speed.

Hilarious, original, I don't see anything not to like, using WS is a bit finnicky, really I'd like to be able to orient hands when playing a very back and forthy game like this. That's a nitpick though, great work!

I forgot to clip my final score (it wasn't great, I dont think) BUT can I say that I LOVE that this is a rhythm game with JOKES to follow instead of the generic music rhythm games 5/5

Oh my god, my game _did_ remind you of your entry. It's uncanny how similar these games are in concept and execution (and even in the cover image).

Yours is better tho. Well, at least it's easier to pick up and have fun in it. It's, like, an actual rhythm game, instead of a weirder, less conventional rhythm game.

So, uh, obviously, I really like the idea and execution, considering, _you know_.

omfg this game is awesome!! --- so hard --- but awesome!! --- it works really well --- the ai voices of the characters + audience crack me up --- the graphics work, gets the message across --- oh --- and Im with an AZERTY keyboard, yeah --- just the fact I dont have to fuckin switch to QWERTY to play your game --> _**THANK YOUU**_ --- I swear haha --- all in all I think your game is an amazing lesson in efficiency --- surely you have some experience in both Game Design & making games in general _[heck you're in my follow list, so... ;-) hehe]_ and you didn't just strike gold 1st try --- yet here you are, LD53, made the funniest game I tested so far --- thanks for the smiles --- take care peace out bro :-D :sparkles:

.

_P.S.: I left the endscreen of the HTML build at the end of my game on, in another tab --- the little mutters of the people that go on like a show room with no show on --- mega-subtle but mega-on point man --- you rock my world_ :-D :sparkles:

Loved this game. Great interpretation of the theme, the jokes were genuinely funny, and the art and sound (especially the voices) really helps sell the whole vibe. It's pretty tough but I like that you don't get a game over if you miss a bunch of beats (like in other rhythm games), you just don't get as high of a score.

Very clever use of the theme! The concept is silly and feels like it shouldn't work, but it's executed so well that it ends up working great. The rhythm element is challenging but satisfying, and I like how you have a clear indicator of exactly when to press the button. I also really like the detail with the audience providing commentary on the jokes. It's pretty funny how the on-screen text will say something like "good try!" but then the audience will yell something like "you suck!"

Great game! There's a ton of little details in the stuttering and the crowd sfx and all that make this feel incredible. The timing was very hard to master with the lack of a rhythm, really interesting idea. I got like 340,000 on stream, I may be back to try for more.

I do like myself a receptive audience. The laughing track is definitely a highlight and "missing a beat" as a metaphor for botching jokes is a clever connection.

I played this on stream while deliriously exhausted, so I just gave it another go now. I'm still absolutely horrible at it :)
This is a creative use of the theme, and the overall idea is pretty solid.
Unfortunately the nature of the game kinda goes against my ability to parse the jokes themselves, but i guess they weren't really meant for the player.
I would've loved a lower difficulty option for those of us who are *cough*, slow.
All the voice lines are pretty funny!

Props for doing this in compo!

Hey! This was a really innovative idea, and a great take on the theme. I thought the execution was a little bit unforgiving on the timings, making my experience probably more frustrating than it needed to be, but I really appreciated the way that you used real jokes in there, which i got a kick out of.

The graphics were simple and got the job done, I felt like I understood pretty much how the game worked and what I needed to do from the get go, which is great. I thought the robotic voices were a little difficult to understand, though I could see what you were going for with the flubbed lines and stuttering.

Overall, this was a super solid entry, with potential to be a lot of fun with a bit more of a gentle approach to difficulty / level chart design.

Always a bit sad when I missed the punchline and got punished with 0 points.. but the punchline is so important in comedy it sadly made sense to design it that way! I think I kept pressing it twice, or pressing the following word to early which would cancel my previous one. I wonder how it'd play if you stopped it from turning a green into a red if you've already got it green? May be too easy and cheesable perhaps, just mentioning it as I kept doing it by mistake.

The jokes were funny, along with the generated voice :D I think you did well to split up words into chunks for the rhythm element of the game. Good job!!

Your game has an interesting concept, and I appreciated the unique take on the theme. However, I found it challenging to progress as the difficulty level was quite high from the very start. It would be great if you could incorporate some sort of progression system to help players ease into the gameplay. Overall, well done!

I'm delighted that it's so simple to play with just two buttons! The way it calculates your score each time makes it easy to understand how to improve. Moreover, the synergistic effect of the graphics and voice is wonderful :)
