Pizza Time Rush by TheButterApple24

[raw]
made by TheButterApple24 for Ludum Dare 53 (JAM)

Quickly! You must deliver these pizzas!

In this round based game you are a pizza delivery driver, you must collect the pizzas and then deliver them within the provided time limit. Pace yourself however, this will only get more difficult!

Post your highest delivery count in the comments!

NOTE: This may not run on everyone’s systems, it uses OpenGL graphics and is built for Windows 11! Like my other game(s) this was built using a custom Game Engine I've been working on for a little over a year.

IMPORTANT: To Download: Navigate to Itch.io link below. Hit "Download Now", in the dialog if you wish to donate you may do so. Otherwise hit "No thanks, just take me to the downloads" to get the game for free!

To Run: Extract .zip on computer. Run PizzaTimeRush.exe

Audio was created using Bfxr.

Music was created using cgMusic (http://maciej.codeminion.com/2008/05/cgmusic-computers-create-music/) and (https://www.fakemusicgenerator.com/).

Controls:

W - Drive Forward

S - Drive Backward

A - Steer Left (relative to car)

D - Steer Right (relative to car)

Known Issues:

Resolution may appear weird, just grab the top bar (to move the window) and hit it against the top of the screen to force a re-size.

UI might appear glitchy. My Game Engine doesn't have a UI system yet so sometimes the UI can be jittery/glitchy. No way to fix except restarting the game until it stops.

@thebutterapple24 Not sure if this is intentional but when you put the game on itch.io you made it cost $1 to download, if this was unintentional you might need to fix that so you can get proper ratings!

@congeesetador Oh no I'm really sorry, its a donation based thing, above the area where it asks for money it says "No thanks, just take me to the downloads" and then it'll be free! Basically only pay if you want to support it, if not the game is 100% free to download! I'll clarify that in the post as-well.

@thebutterapple24 Thank you for letting me know! This jam was my first time ever using itch.io, and for the game I would like to say it was so fun to play! It took me a second to figure out how to find the houses until I looked at the obvious arrow pointing right at them. After that the game turned into a pull my hair out time paced masterpiece and I loved every second of it! I was constantly turning into dead ends which was so annoying but I loved every bit of it. The game was meant to be annoyingly challenging to get through and I love when games do that. Overall this is a very great game and you did an amazing job!

Ah that's understandable, my first time using Itch.io was confusing too! I'm really happy to hear you enjoyed the game!!! :D

Good idea, wish the driving was better. I kept hitting walls all the time.

The fast paced music does suit the game and the car audio is alright as well.

The gameplay is fun, but I feel like you could have significantly improved it by having a small minimap in some corner of the screen, showing a literal "drop off point" for the pizzas, and refining the collisions with the walls a bit more. The game calls for speed and I'd like to drift the streets and occasionally bump the curb (or houses) in tight corners, but each collision just drains the entire momentum of the car.

Still, it's fun and entertaining, and a good game jam entry!

@xedur Thank you! I actually did want to add a minimap but my engine currently doesn't support anything to reliably do that. I'm hoping for the next jam I can implement a UI system so the mini-map and drop off point are easier/possible and allow custom 2D colliders! Currently all the walls are Box Colliders that I placed by hand. I am glad to hear you had fun! :D

Nice submission! The music fit the game very well. I thought the streets were a little narrow but then found myself using the houses and curbs to help me steer which worked out. Nice job!

Thanks! Yeah car physics are a tough one to get down! Tried to make it speedy but unfortunately ended up making turns a bit tough haha

Well done on this game! I appreciate the challenging and entertaining gameplay, as well as the fitting fast-paced music. I also like how the houses and curbs can be used to help steer the car. Great work!

This is the type of game I thought everyone would make based on the theme :)
Overall neat driving mechanics. I guess the goal itself becomes a bit repetitive. Finding the right house is a bit tricky too. Great job on finishing the game!

I liked the GTA style pizza delivery concept quite a lot. The control of the car somehow was very difficult to me and also behaved not what i would expect from a car like it was sliding sideways in a non natural way. The map was limited to the road which also felt strange, why not allow to go the car on the grass, maybe allow to break a few things here and there (loose some time if something bigger gets broken)? It was great though that you had the arrow to point to the right location. The houses looked cool from the above so really brought back a bit the GTA feeling.

@christian-zommerfelds Thank you! I wasn't too sure how to alter the mechanics within the time constraints so I more focused on strengthening it!

@hotaloca The driving was probably the most complex part of the programming since at the time my physics engine didn't have a lot of the functionality. Thank you for the feedback on it! The reasons for having the map limited to the road was to make the game a bit more difficult since rather than driving straight to the place you had to naturally learn the map over time. Breakable objects weren't actually considered but are a neat idea! The GTA feeling was unexpected but an interesting result!

The "space" car turned out to be a very interesting solution, if it were not for such narrow and rigid road walls. Sounds do not hurt the ears, which is rare in games about cars. In general, well done, friend =)

@lex-4kraba Thank you! The car sounds were really important to get right, while not perfect I'm glad to hear the volume/pitch was good!

Nice concept! Good idea and graphics. But I think the car's physics is not so convinient. I suppose you can make the car less slippery.

On my 4k display it kind of glitched out upon launch, but resizing the window worked. :) I wish the roads were a bit wider in relation to the car size but it was fun to drive around. Car sound was decent and the arrow for navigation was a nice touch. Well done. :)

@nastasya Thank you!!

@trevor-lentz Yeah I'm looking into trying to auto-size the window on start so users don't have to manually do that! Thank you so much for the feedback, I am glad to hear you had fun playing!

Nice little game! I thought the car controller was actually pretty fun, although it was a bit annoying that the streets were so narrow and that I kept getting stuck on the sides. It would be fun to have wider streets (or at least the ability to drive on the grass) so I could drift around and play with the car controller more as that is the best part of this game IMO. Also though the overall goal of the game was a bit too easy as the timer only started once you picked up new pizzas at the shop. Would be kinda cool to have pizza orders continually rolling in each with their own timer and you have to balance picking up and dropping off the pizzas. Nicely done though and congratulations on finishing and submitting your game!

A super simple and pretty fun little delivery game. The controls is pretty bad, but it fits the game idea, and with better controls the game would be less fun. I like both the visuals and the chosen music. Overall a fun little jam game.

Nice game! Now I want pizza  :pizza:

The driving was a bit funny, but I got the hang of it. A minimap would have been nice, but for now my strategy was to follow the left-most or the right-most roads till the arrow was horizontal ;)

Picking up the pizzas at the pizza parlour was one of the hardest things, because a car can't move sideways.
I like that there were different types of pizzas, but for the gameplay that didn't really seem to matter.

The text that showed which house you had to find could have been a bit more clear, also what part of the house counted as the front.

After 27 deliveries I stopped, because it became a little repetitive and too easy.

Cute graphics. Overall, well done!
