Mailure To Launch by drainkid

made by drainkid for Ludum Dare 53 (JAM)

DesktopIcon.png Mailure To Launch is a first-person action game where you fight delivery drones that throw packages at you - but you can catch the packages and throw them right back! Different packages do different things and interact with each other to create unique effects.

Use WASD to Move, LMB & RMB to Throw / Catch, and Space to jump. Also, you can use the scroll wheel to adjust sensitivity if it's too high for you.

I really enjoyed my time playing, I would love to see a fully developed version of this game! I noticed that you could use both hands to grab a single package, duplicating the package; and I don't personally like how "floaty"
the jumping/gravity was, if I was able to b-hop I would have been right at home lol. I did really like how the packages acted as a different type of projectile, very cool! Oh, also, good voice acting! I felt pretty immersed.

Very fun game. I like how you took the Delivery theme and managed to turn it into a very fun FPS. I especially like how each package acts as a projectile with it's own special effects. Good game!

The sound effects were deligthful, and the milk bot was my favourite one. If you ever make a full version, i would love to play it!!!!

I love everything about this; the resource management, the frantic fast-placed play, theme, art style, humor, and DNB ost. One of my favs by far <3

@pannda its really funny you mention bhopping because I actually wanted to add that - I originally wanted to do a mario-style hold-jump that you could tap to do short b-hops and gain speed. But that was super low on the priority list and didn't end up getting in in time, so the player just does the max height jump all the time :P

Was pretty fun to play :) though the sensitivity was off for me and I overlooked the description to scroll.

Cool game! I couldn't understand the voice all the time, and it might have been good to give the player an incentive to catch (more dangerous) instead of evade and pick up, but these are just nitpicks.
I liked the unique story, the overall mood that was not too serious and the concept of the game ;)

Really well done. I'd love a crosshair. The intro dialogue at the intercom was hilarious.

@drainkid Absolutely loved this game and will keep it on my desktop to play! It is a perfect balance of everything, the intercom audio was absolutely the best and the little blow up sounds when you destroy the robots was hilarious. This game is amazingly made for only being made in 72 hours. You guys did a perfect job on this! Keep up the good work!

I loved this game! A crosshair would be a good addition I think. The particle effects were really cool! :)

Wow very well done game. It all plays well together and especially in the small details that just work. And that in the short time, respect!

Super well done game! Little annoying with my packages getting caught in the environment and would've loved to see like a crosshair or something to help with dizziness but other than that it was really fun!

Cool game and good idea. The shooting is really sudden. Some animation would make it more ergonomic.

Such a cool game and concept! The one thing I'd like to see is just a simple animation of the mitt would help out with timing for catches.

That was absolutely fantastic! The car battery robots were terrifying with how eager they are to hunt me down. The music was great and felt really exciting when entering a new area. Picking up and throwing ever-increasingly ridiculous items was so much fun. And the voice acting! I usually find it to be poorly done and stiff, but I've gotta say: you *nailed* it. It was so good and fun and enhanced the experience immensely.

I'll agree that the jumping was a bit too floaty and the lack of feedback on getting hit was a bit disorienting, but I finished the last few stages without getting hit so I didn't find that to be much of an issue. The fireworks were, by far, the best item. Just tossing some into a room and watching the, well, fireworks was so much fun!

Extra points for the title, too. :P

Very nice!
It would be nice to be able to pick up some objects like plants or computers to through them to.
A mouse sensibility less high would be welcome too

Had a LOT of fun with that, different enemy types and projectiles kept it feeling fresh too. Art-style and the props (including the drones) were super cute. Love the chaotic energy of the deliveree, especially 'Sorry to do this to you again' implying this isn't the first time this has happened??? Great work!

@Liven there's a mouse sens option, but I guess I just didn't point it out enough 'cause you're not the first person to not notice it lol

Amazing entry, not to speak a of even being a first one! Loved the different projectiles and status effects, the music fading was super smooth and the chopped robot voices worked perfectly with the soundtrack. The one vertical room with the long "stairway" up was a bit difficult compared to the rest, wish there was some way to regain hearts from killed enemies. All in all great game, had a ton of fun completing this one!

Lol 5/5 on audio. I think having the boxes automatically charge if you hold click after catching it would make it flow nicer, but thats just a small thing

Really liked the level designs and the game feel!
I think some subtitles for the intercom would be awesome, missed some of the dialogue that was said, and that's a shame since it seemed funny.
I really enjoyed how much personality the robots had~

This is an outstanding shooting game! I really like these little robots.
I mean, what's more stress-relieving than using car batteries, milk (what?), gas cans, and fireworks to destroy some adorable robots! *evil laughter*
The voice acting is also very amusing! For future updates, could you consider adding a skip button for the opening dialogue? I kicked all of my potted plants together while listening to it, haha. I've already beaten the game and I'm looking forward to more content in the future!

I also love these adorable health icons!

@rincs Yeah, sorry about that. There was supposed to be a sort of 'ticket' system where only one or two drones could talk at once, but at some point it broke and we never had time to fix it. Hopefully you still enjoyed the game :)

@yuriscat Thank you!!! And yeah i kinda wish I added a skip intro button myself lol... It'd be super easy to slot in but being my first ludum dare I'm really fuzzy on the rules surrounding updates. Maybe post-jam, who knows.

Aw I wish I could play your game but unfortunately it runs really poorly on my PC. :( I did really like the intro cutscene, the awkward delivery and the implication that this is somewhat of a common occurrence is super funny. Also the music is quite bombastic! Got some jazzy chords there
LDJam user 342640
04. May 2023 · 15:47 UTC
@fupi awww man sorry to hear :(

I was really really concerned about perf since we switched render pipelines at the very end to get the lights working and it ended up making the game quite a bit more demanding - but i guess i felt like we got away with it because nobody else had mentioned it so far. Glad you still liked the music though!

Super fun shooter!! Loved the different boxes and enemies. A little laggy but barely a problem. Nice work!!!

This game is hilarious! The levels got notably more challenging as I went through, and I had to start strategizing what packages to throw where to optimally kill all the drones. I initially thought the 3 health system was too punishing, but as I got used to the game I really started to like it. The intro sequence is hilarious, and the conclusion is a perfect punchline. The game did run quite poorly on my GTX 1060, probably around 20 FPS, but even through the lag I had a great time. Thanks for the super fun experience!

@aurailus Thank you!! I caught your vod - sorry about the lag, i heard the comment about the entire map being loaded at once and you might be surprised to learn that we were using a pretty aggressive vision cull. I think we just went way way too overboard on the dynamic lighting, and thought it was fine because it hit decent perf on Ashley's macbook. But given you and some other people's comments, we apparently fell into a false sense of security xD

I'm glad you had fun with the game and enjoyed our half-assed sense of humor - thank you for playing!!

@drainkid Damn, I guess it really was just intense lighting then! I was also running it on Linux through Proton, so I'm sure that added a bit of overhead as well.

This was really funny lol. I also thought the combat was super fun!
Some quality of life I think would be nice is crosshairs, since a lot of this requires hitting smol targets with an unorthodox weapon. Some feedback on when you get hit too could help also, often I didn't realize I was low on health until I died.

I think the dialogue was all super fun, but it was a little hard to hear or distinguish at times. Maybe boosting the volume or even subtitles would help that, although the latter might be a bit much for a jam lol.
I also really appreciated the dynamic soundtrack, very cool!!

I also liked that there was a wide range of box types, although it wasn't totally clear how all of them worked. I think as a player one of the things I wanted to be able to do was pick up random objects like potted plants and throw them also, even if it was for reduced damage, since sometimes the flow was broken a tiny bit by waiting for a box to be launched.

Overall really good game!
