One trick with SHMUPs is that the hitbox tends to be both (1) much smaller than the sprite, and (2) clear to the player where the bounds are. I had some difficulty dodging bullets because of the second point.
Writing is great, full points for humor. Great game!
Had a little bit of trouble finding the right key to get out of the start screen.
Also, that Akira slide... WOOT!
Whole thing feels retro af, the music is outstanding, mood and gameplay feel great. You got a really good jam experience on your hands.
The only thing I'd critique is that the fireballs the player is shooting are too small and very mixel. It throws off the pixelart feel a bit. So does the Akira slide but it's not as noticable in the slide.
Regardless, I love this game!
I found the bosses mechanics very clever, so the game wasn't just a sequence of "just hit this enemy a lot". Unfortunately I'm very bad at it so I had to use the cheat button to see the ending. (How bad am I? Well, I've managed to get a game over *after* learning about the cheat button 😅) Loved that ending and it's music, though.
I really like the wholesomeness to parts of the story, while other parts are actually kinda brutal. Rhynocyclops is dead for sure, those teeny crabs, and verticrab if crabhalla is anything like valhalla. but at least they are reunited <3
My favorite character design was moraligator because youre shooting the cloud, not him xD
The gameplay while simple is still really fun, but I think even then those last couple of guys have so much HP it becomes almost a battle of attrition. Even when you know the patterns, it takes a long time to execute. I think a cool idea would be an additional attack for some enemies that doesnt happen as often that leaves them temporarily helpless, vulnerable to more damage, or exposed in a way that its easier to land your shots. Or maybe some more designs like verticrab where you can damage parts would be hella dope too
good shit guy!
