Parasitus by Koyaaaa

[raw]
made by Koyaaaa for Ludum Dare 53 (JAM)

Parasitus is horror game inspired by other horror games from the PS1 like Resident Evil and Parasite Eve. I was going to add some story so the game would fit the theme, but I ran out of time, so it doesn't really follow the theme at all.

Controls: - WASD to move - Mouse to look around - Hold right click to aim - Press left click while aimed to shoot - Press f to interact with doors and keys

This is a great game for the amount of time you took to make it!

Well done. Pixel graphics made the horror look scarier. Like it

The game has a solid visual base, but all the other aspects are lacking - you can tell that you had a bigger scope but just ran out of time.

Scary atmosphere. The controls were simple and easy to use. Like you said your self the game does not follow the theme but stil a nice game.

Was interesting! It had very nice visuals!Tho the lack of ambient sounds/music made it feel a bit awkward. Also noticed you can drag your mouse down so much that you look upside down in the opposite direction. Also I couldn't really pick up the keys but when I was upside down I could.

@renardgames yeah I ran out of time to implement the vertical rotation clamping, thanks for playing though!

I won! I like the retro vibes and FPS action. Would be much improved with music, ambiance, animations, story, etc. but what are you gonna do. I might be going crazy, but is there a headshot mechanic? I felt like certain enemies took more or fewer hits to kill, or maybe I just missed a few times.

I adore this type of ps1 style. The shadowy ambience is awesome.

@real-human-1000 There is! Enemies have 3hp, shots to the torso do 1 damage, and shots to the head deal 2. I didn't want to tell people as I thought it would be cool for them to find out by experimenting in-game, I probably could have added something to indicate that headshots are actually doing more damage though. Thanks for the feedback.

this is so moody I love it, there always that one horror game in every jam lol, the gameplay is simple but just enough to keep you on edge, maybe it needs some jumpscares , nicely done!

Very nice mood and graphics. Controls are kinda slow, but I guess it's fine for a horror game

This is absolute outstanding. I love the old horror game aesthetic. You actually are successful to create the spooky and dark atmosphere. I understand 3 days were not enough but you really did a great job. Maybe finish the whole thing after this jam and I will wait to play the finished game.

I really like this style. Maybe it would be better to use a red screen to indicate health status after being bitten.

When I take part of game jam and it's time rate and give feedback to games, I make sure to play all kind of games. I also plays games that I will not usually play. Horror games is something I don't usually plays, because I find them pretty uninteresting and often not very scary.

I tried to be openminded when playing your game, but sadly I did not like it very much. For me it's never really scary, and don't really see what should scare me. The gameplay is okay for a jam game, but I wished there was more into it. The visuals is in a way purposely bad, and I understand the nostalgia aspect of this, but when I in the past played those kind of games, I already then wished, dreamed and hopped they would look better. The few sounds there is in the game is okay, and it fits the game idea pretty well, but I would liked a bit more. So overall is this not a very great game for me.

BUT this does not means that this is a bad game, but it just not a game for me. The story could have helped, and a more interesting gameplay would have done a lot to make me like the game more. The visuals and sound effect element is something I could looked past if the rest of the game had caught my interest.

I hope this review was not too rough, and I am happy to see that other people seem to like the game.

This was interesting, I often find horror to be a rough one with game jams as it's hard to build all that atmosphere in 48 or 72 hours, so I look forward to seeing how they play. This game controlled really nicely, and the pixel aesthetic was done really well. I will admit that the darkness did have me on edge, but that darkness was often a bit too overwhelming. I think maybe a few more lights could have kept the atmosphere without sacrificing gameplay. The monsters looked horrifying at first, but I found the more I found them, and the more I face them, the less scary they got. I think if you added a story, built the tension a little bit more and definitely added some more feedback and gun play (like limited ammo, reloading and animation) it would feel pretty good. I would take a deeper look at what made games like resident evil scary, outside of the graphics! It was the survival and not knowing if you would be prepared for what was to come. I think you could flesh this out with a bit more time and it would be really cool!

Props for making this game all by yourself in such a short time. The game works fine as is, but it feels a bit too simple. I think the game would benefit greatly from having more mechanics such as ammo and reloading, maybe health system or stamina bar, or even more enemy types.
