Puzzle Post by Dean James

[raw]
made by Dean James for Ludum Dare 53 (COMPO)

The Game

Puzzle post is a modern take on the classic "Chip's Challenge" game. The goal of each level is to deliver your package to the post box.

Use the WASD keys to move, and Q to drop the item you are currently holding when over an empty tile.

Development

I'm one of those developers who has countless unfinished projects. This weekend, I decided I would take part in Ludum Dare and force myself to release my game, regardless of how it turns out. This is my first time taking part in the solo compo, and (if you are reading this post and I haven't scrappped my game) will be the first game I have ever released to the world.

What I have Learnt

  • This is the first time making audio of any kind. It was fun to play around with, but ultimately due to time constraints didn't really get the chance to properly learn and experiment. Hopefully I can get better at this for the next Ludum Dare!

What Went Well

  • I think the movement and mechanics are interesting, with a high potential for more. I have a habit of over-engineering all my projects. In this game, I implemented quite a nice event system for when a player moves, when a tile changes, and so on. Though this makes it easy to add new features, it perhaps wasn't a good idea to do in a game jam. 😄

What Didn't Go Well

  • Honestly, the puzzles in the game aren't that difficult. I feel like with a bit more time and inspiration, I could have created far more engaging levels.

As new gimmicks were added with each stage, it made progressing through the game very enjoyable.
Additionally, the intuitive controls and smooth pacing made it feel great to play.

That was nice! I like adding new mechanics you need to figure out level by level. It somehow reminds me color games by Bart Bonte. Anyway.. I'm stuck and I'm wondering whether it's me not able to think outside of the box or whether it actually has no solution:

I'm probably missing something but I think I already tried all tiles

EDIT: Oh, now I can see the message on the bottom left corner. It's the end of the game!

I didn't realize at first that you could only hold one item at a time, and the music is a bit lacking; but the game is pretty good, and has good puzzle variety. Good job finishing your project!

In the COMPO mode, I found really difficult to create many features and many levels since we need to create everything. Even if you're saying the level are not difficult enough, each level has its own gameplay feature and THAT shows that you work hard on your game. With a little more time you could create easilly many levels.

Great job for this game!

I like the colour scheme that was chosen for the game as it's makes it easy to immediately see what objects there are in the level. The controls were a little confusing as I didn't know you could pick up objects again after they are dropped by moving away then back to the tile they exist on. But other than that I had no issues and enjoyed playing the game :)

Short and sweet, had a great time. Well done for making all levels have a unique hook!
