Becasse against the depths by Norah

[raw]
made by Norah for Ludum Dare 53 (JAM)

Welcome to the Barracuda archipelago!

For every night when a full moon shines above the archipelago, unspeakable horrors rise up from the depths of the sea. Led by a savage hunger, they strike everything that dares come near their teeth or tentacles.

Fortunately, there is Josette. Bearing the burden of the years that have passed, but also the sacred knowledge, with her grimoire, on how to prevent the attacks of these nightmare fuelled monsters.

Yet she does not use any cannons or harpoons, nor does she cast spells or curses.

For there is one thing Josette is absolutely sure of: a good meal can soften even the hardest of stone hearts.

The gameplay loop didn't hook me, but I really enjoyed everything about the visuals!

Nice little experiential game. Clicking the equal sign to generate the dish does feel like redundant step however.

Nice work! The art is incredible and the music was fun. The boat moved a little slow, though. I liked the entries in the book, added a lot of character. Well done!

The visuals are stunning, but the gameplay is not the right thing for me.

I really like the visual of the game, it's surely the main strength.
I'm not sure if it was because I have a 4k display, but the text was all so small, and the recipe book text was also hard to read because the font was so thin!

The overall idea of the gameplay sounds fun, you have to check the monster and then fill the ingredients.
It was frustrating not being able to see the monster while looking at the recipe book though, because the look is important and I had constantly to go back and forth (at some point I was lost on how to exit the book and clicked on menu instead).
Also I think that the order should have not mattered, it just make it more complex for the small game that it is. I think without the order you would have still presented your idea very well and it would have worked better for a game made out of a jam. Don't be afraid that it will be too easy, for a jam game like this it's better that the game just flows!

That was very cool, but a bit short, tho the graphism are incredible. There is one thing, the handwritting that is kinda hard to read on, it’s way too skinny, but besides it’s all fine ! Gg

Those visuals are truly great! Love the artstyle! The game itself was bit to easy with all the tips on the side. I would have loved to try all the recipes by myself without a guide! But it was great anyways! Well done!

This was a pretty fun game! It was a little confusing at first as to what I was supposed to do, but once I figured it out it turned out to be pretty well made!

Love the art so much. The environment is so mysterious - and it almost looks toy-like. I do think the gameplay could use some improvement - the ship moves far too slow, and the feeding seems like trial and error without the recipes, since the hints give multiple possibilities for each monster. Great job!

This game was so good! Character art is fantastic, model of the ship is also cute, as well as the ingredient icons. I loved the gameplay a lot. Took a few seconds to adjust to the movement of the boat, but it came naturally for the most part. I love how the world is bordered by the clouds so we can clearly see the limits of the location. However the sea was too dark for me, I could barely see anything. I suspect it is part of the gameplay to make navigation harder, but maybe just make it a liiiiitle bit lighter. Also, make it possible to check out the monster again after opening the recipe tab, I took photos of monsters on my phone so I could look at them while choosing a recipe ^^"
Overall I have one question: when you expand this game, make more locations and monsters to feed, let me know when you'll be selling it on Steam cause I will buy it :D

I spent a good minute trying to figure out why i couldn't make one of the recipes for them monster then gave up and tried another and it worked. Going to another monster i used the first recipe and it let me make it, which just means i can try things until i get an image. I don't like that you don't let us puzzle out what each monster wants.

Your Art was quite good, your music was fine but it got old a bit quickly.

Great artwork and modeling, the character designs are very detailed and the UI is immersive.

This game deserves more ratings, and I will invite my friends to try it out and leave a rating for you.:heart:

@squidgod @saryah @potkirland @routard @xschaumix @borderdestroyer @sam-gorman @flynow @rcartier Thank you ! :heart:

@soulreviews @tyler-m @t-c @maxi1324 @wolfier Thanks for your feedbacks, we'll try to improve for a future jam !

@toccio94 Yes, some other people struggled to read the recipes book because we didn't think of different resolutions, and also we realized too late that the monster was no more visible at the "cooking" step. You're right for the order of the ingredients, in fact we didn't succeed to keep the game working no matter the order, so yes, it's a bit strange and frustrating. Thank you for this complete feedback !

@kanity That's so nice, thank you so much for your feedbacks :heart: ( We really had fun making this game so maybe we will continue it :thinking: )

@yuriscat Thank you, so nice of you :smile: I'm going to check your game too !

Great visuals! Great gameplay! Like, it was actually innovative to have the "how to do things" just be part of the game and exploring. At first I was like "oh gosh, so much reading", but I quickly grew to love it because there is a lot of good content in the reading. The take on the theme is unique and graphics were awesome. Your shading work was stellar!

While the music was exactly on theme with the aesthetic of the game, I wish it were more interesting to listen to. I felt the phrasing was a bit too short and the repetition began to be a little much. However, even though I wish the music was more interesting, the story and the gameplay were rewarding enough to make this game stand out.

Thank you for making this and sharing! It was a joy to play!
