Atrius by Lucas LaMarr

[raw]
made by Lucas LaMarr for Ludum Dare 53 (EXTRA)

A short 2D platformer experience where the player must navigate through different cube shaped worlds by viewing them from different angles in order to collect shards and traverse through portals leading to other worlds.

---HOW TO PLAY---

Hold Left Mouse Button and drag mouse to rotate the world cube.

Press A / D to move.

Press Space to jump (can perform a small boost after half a second)

Hold ESCAPE for 3 seconds to close the game.

Scroll Wheel Adjusts distance from the cube

Different sections of the level are projected on to each side of the cube. Rotate the cube as you are moving between different parts of the level to see where you are going. Collect all yellow shards and deliver them through the final portal. The section that is displayed on each side of the cube is randomized and so it is highly unlikely that you will get a straightforward layout. You must spend some time inspecting each side of the cube and figuring out what parts of the level are displayed on each side.

Interesting experiment and concept execution here, Could be interesting with varied 3d shapes to navigate across if you wanted to expand on the concept!

I think maybe the white space can be replace by some more real material?

@neonlare I think that is a really cool idea! The original concept actually did include a triangle and a sphere, but for the sake of time and simplicity I just stayed with the cube for this demo. If I continue working on it in the future I think that could be something interesting to explore.

@zhiteng-chen Absolutely! If I expand on this idea any further I would like to hire an artist to fill out the worlds and replace the solid colored cubes with more interesting environments.

Great idea and implementation, but i felt a little lost since the edges of the cube`s faces are not directly connected to their adjacent faces.

This is an interesting concept for sure. I like the idea of randomized levels and going from cube face to face, but the random nature of it was more frustrating than fun for me at least. I like random level design but there needs to be some rules to it. Unless I'm mistaken each edge that you can walk through is random, even within the same face. It made it more of a guessing game for me than a puzzle I guess. It was cool rotating the cube around, but I wish there was a little more indication of where you would be dropped off. The third level had me make a blind jump to who knows where after jumping across many small platforms. I did like the music, and even though the graphics were minimalistic I think they fit fine with the game as a whole.

@ruddgasm @team-gaivot Thank you both for the feedback and bringing up your thoughts on the randomized faces. The levels work based on 6 cameras all pointing to different parts of the level and each camera projects itself onto a random face of the cube. I felt like putting things in order made the cube rotation mostly pointless, but I am interested to hear that the both of you felt like the randomness actually might have made things less enjoyable.

Also, good find on the last level. I tried to make it to where any place that had a jump in between faces would have some indication about where the player would land on another side, but there seem to be a few places that I overlooked. I will take note of the things that the both of you have mentioned and address them in a future version if I continue with it. Thanks!
