Storm Dove by RisingLeaf

[raw]
made by RisingLeaf for Ludum Dare 53 (JAM)

Game

StormDoveTitleScreen.png Who delivers mail that got caught in a storm to the mailboxes that also got caught in the storm?

The storm dove squadron!

You play a dove working for this group. You are flying through a heavy storm, dodging various objects that got ripped of the ground while collecting letters and delivering them to similarly flying mailboxes. As you progress, the storm becomes stronger and faster.

In a strong storm, strange things might happen...

Controls

  • WASD / Arrow Keys for moving around
  • E for hiding dialogue
  • R for skipping the tutorial
  • Escape / P for pausing the game
  • Q/L-Shift for activating protective aura (only after storyline is finished)

Note: If you are plaing in browser I recommend going into fullscreen as the game was not fiiting the page on my end.

Features

  • 5 level that each introduce something more
  • a boss fight
  • a difficulty slider (because I was only able to beat it at lowest difficulty)
  • an endless progression mode after defeating the boss

Took to long for the mail boxes to show. Music gets a bit monotonous

The first attempt took about 20 seconds before any objects appeared on the screen. I pressed escape and went back to game and then objects appeared.

The music, sound and graphics are fantastic. The gameplay loop is a little repetitive, but is enjoyable enough for a little bit.

neat post-processing honestly and good controls. I think Ludum Dare is cropping the HTML5 version tho, you might want to publish it on itch.io and link to the page here that way people can play it from their browser easily.

The art and music is cool, and the game is pretty fun! For anyone else playing the game, E will move onto the next dialogue to help speed along the lengthy tutorial (a bit different than hiding dialogue). Also, in the pause menu is a slider for how fast to play the game. By default it's on the slowest speed which is quite slow and makes it take a while for the level to start, so I would speed it up.

Solid work. Aside the bug in the beginning where things don't spawn for a long time / way too much intro text, the game is nice. Mechanically, I really like what what you've done with the mail doubling as an objective and as health. Nice work!

Looks cool, but where are all the objects and mailboxes?

Oh cool I really enjoyed that! I feel like the concept of grabbing letters out of the air and putting them in mailboxes (also in the air haha) scratches some kind of child-like imagination itch :)

I found I had the most fun when I turned the speed slider up most of the way!

Agree the tutorial was a bit longer than necessary but I did enjoy the gameplay and I thought the game was fun, great entry!

@ixil-miniussi I do not have an itch.io account, I am aware of the issue with the cropping but I did not find a solution for it.
If you want to get a good experience I recommend entering fullscreen mode (bottom right corner of the player, use the scrollbars)

Time between tutorial and first level seem too long, but after that the pace is pretty good. Love the bloom on the graphics, can tell you are familiar with pixel art design! The lightning with predict spark path was a nice surprise too

Thank you all so much for all the great feedback! Rising Leaf and I will separately of the game jam work on fixing it, and hopefully publish the game on itch.io and possibly google play store.

I'm excited to play more of this one, but I seem to be stuck around the end of the intro/tutorial. I just keep flying after the tutorial ends and I'm not seeing anything else yet. I also reloaded the page and tried using 'R' to skip the tutorial, but it gets stuck in the same spot (seems like some other scene/event is supposed to load at this point). I'll check back on this one tomorrow and see if there's an updated version. Seems like really cool music and art so far!

@chompdev It can take a while for the objects to show up, I have not found the issue yet.

@k8n @chompdev
I just discovered that the web build is broken, for some reason I can not determine, if you want to play the game you would need to download it.
I am very sorry.

@risingleaf - Thanks for investigating the bug. If it helps pinpoint the issue, the solution that @hatheus suggested worked for me. Pressing pause/unpause after the tutorial allowed the next section to load successfully! :)

Sweet game, love the theme! I liked the idea of the temporal stuff, but think it either needs to come at you slower to give the player time to adapt or have a brief period when switching temporal directions of no obstacles. It felt bad to get hit almost immediately after temporal switching on higher speeds. It would also be nice to see how many levels there are for a sense of progress, since the visuals/gameplay are very similar between levels.

I think Level 3(temporal) was a bit slow, but things quickly picked up pace with the new packages which I really liked. Ifeel like it is a bit counterintuitive to save mail for the last boss.

The difficulty slider is a really nice QoL and overall a very well thought out game!
