Harpoon Lagoon by Adam Gallina

[raw]
made by Adam Gallina for Ludum Dare 53 (JAM)

Welcome to Harpoon Lagoon! A cozy little fishing game where you fish...and then fish some more! Features 11 types of fish, a merchant with simple quests, and boats!

The gameplay is somewhat inspired by Dredge, I've been watching a playthrough recently and both consciously and unconsciously built a similar game, but I hope the fishing aspect feels different enough. I'm pretty happy with the result overall, it could some more balancing, but other than that I was able to finish everything I wanted to.

Note - I didn't get a chance to implement hard boundaries, you won't fall off the map, but it might look strange if you go far enough out

How to play 1. Right click to aim, and left click to launch a harpoon. If you hit a fish, you'll enter fishing modeFishingEx.png 2. While in fishing mode, right click to pull the fish towards you, and left click to fire more harpoons 3. Be careful when pulling the fish, if it puts too much stress on your rope, it'll snap and you'll lose the fish 4. You can kill the fish with harpoons, in which case it won't stress the rope at all to pull it 5. After pulling the fish to the surface, you'll catch it! 6. Bring fish to the merchant to sell them (Press E to interact with the house)MerchantEx.png 7. Press U to open the upgrades menu, and spend your new coins! (See below for a description of each upgrade)

Controls * WASD: Move * E: Interact * Tab: Inventory * U: Upgrades * Left Click: Shoot * Right Click: Aim/Pull * Space: The most important button. Press it often

Upgrades * Boat Speed: Make your boat move faster * Harpoon Count: Increase the number of harpoons you have * Harpoon Speed: How fast your harpoons move underwater * Pull Speed: How quickly you can pull a fish to the surface * Rope Strength: How much stress your rope can take before breaking

Cool graphics. I like the fish shadows floating on the water. That's pretty unique.

not so bad, really relaxing game. My best fish was around 16 or 18 m.

I enjoyed the fish designs, and the transition from boating to the underwater fishing was cool.

I was immediately _hooked_ (heh heh). But really though, this was a fun little sea adventure :) I couldn't, for the life of me find the Felippe fish, but got everyone else!

i like the overhead mechanic!
Things to improve :
* Pick a camera angle and stick to it
- maybe a mostly top down view?
* fish should be more visible than a black outline?
* would love to see the fishing line when you are pulling them in
* should have some audio feedback of the harpoon hitting, and when the fish escapes

Fun and chill, game. I enjoy the concept and think it has some fins to grow.
The harpooning was satisfying and the progression ideas are cool.
I think it would benefit from some collision effects with islands/boathouse, and if the underwater fish reeling had visible under water look without obscuring the fish.

I liked the movable camera personally, as it lets you see and scout for the fish you want for an order in particular. Graphics and audio were great, some small bugs like it only checks the value of fish you have once when you interact and not upon selling/giving them. Overall pretty great!

Yeah @fruitflinger and @jb-rock I definitely thought about adding those things, mostly just ran out of time

@khaokg wdym it only checks the value of the fish once you interact?

@adam-gallina Like when I went in to the shop to sell, it would tell me I have like 700 gold worth of fish or whatever, and say I sold 2 of them, I'd back out and it'd still say 700 gold worth of fish.

@khaokg Ohhh, yeah, I see where that came from - good news is, it's only a graphical bug, not an infinite money glitch lol. It'll still calculate correctly if you do press the button

@adam-gallina Ah okay, I expected as such, I think it just "checks" your value when you first check in, so that makes sense haha. No infinite currency today!

A lovely wholesome game that I genuinely enjoyed playing. One note, I immediately went for rope strength upgrades and maxed it out after my first trip or two to the shop, after that it didn't feel like it was possible to fail catching a fish or necessary to use the extra harpoons. P.S. I love the fish names!

Very nice and mellow game! The music is very soothing, and the catching mechanic is solid.

I could not find a Felippe fish, so I couldn't complete the order. Is it just very rare, or is that a bug?

@kazzymodus It's fairly rare, so it might've just been bad rng

Fun game! I like how the rare fish have different yet similar silhouettes to the common ones. Encourages the player pay close attention
