Beacons Of Light:Lighthouse by ZHANG YING
Game Introduction :
The Beacon of Light is a 2D side-scrolling adventure game in the parkour genre, set on a remote island far from the rest of the world, depicting the life of a Kiwi bird that guards the lighthouse.
At the end of the world, on an island, on a rainy night, there are flying birds and Kiwi who guards the Lighthouse.
Kiwi, the lighthouse keeper, carries his lamp to transmit light to the lighthouse, delivering hope to countless birds flying in the dark night.
In the game, you will play as a Kiwi bird, carrying a lamp to search for the tower in the dark night. The wick of the lamp gradually shortens, and the road is long and dark. Wish you a safe journey.
About us:
Kiwi birds are nocturnal and relatively small, usually about the size of an egg. Although they are birds, they cannot fly like other birds because their wings are relatively small and not strong enough to support them in the air. Additionally, the kiwi bird's bones are heavier than those of other flying birds, which also limits their ability to fly.
Despite not being able to fly, kiwi birds are very strong walkers and runners on the ground. They have strong and well-developed leg muscles that allow them to quickly move through various environments such as forests and mountains, making this an important way for them to survive and find food.
We take Kiwi as our protagonist, and connect it with game elements such as the night and lighthouse, just as the lighthouse illuminates the way for the lonely boat in the sea, and Kiwi delivers hope to countless flying birds. We also want to convey love and emotion to players through the game.
I hope you will enjoy our game.

Using a cactus to block the way is an interesting idea, but just by touching teh cactus and dying can be a bit disappointing because I don't know what's going on, maybe our little wiki bird is a little vulnerable, isn't it? Regarding the time limit, I know it's to motivate players to move forward, but the time given is a bit short, which kind of limits my desire to explore the world.
Some constructive criticism:
- It's possible that some people can't play your game because they cannot unpack .rar files. I didn't run into that problem, thankfully, but **.zip files** are more common as far as I know.
- There are two important quality of life features that every platformer should have: jump buffering (which this game does have - very good! :white_check_mark:) and **coyote time**. Maybe you do have coyote time and it's just very, very brief, but if you don't, you should give it a high priority! Otherwise, players will feel like the game sometimes ignores their input. Another such feature is corner correction (which makes it so the player is pushed around a corner when they touch it only by a pixel or two), but that might take a little more effort, so maybe it's out of scope for a game jam.
- Thin platforms should be **semi-solid** if possible. (I heard they're a bit of a pain to implement in Unity though, so I won't hold it against you.)
- I believe the horizontally moving platforms in the last level had different **cycle intervals** which caused them to go out of sync. It wasn't too big of an issue this time, but it's something to keep in mind because it can easily feel frustrating, especially in games with a time limit.
It lacks audio feedbacks and it was a bit too short.
Great work to everyone ! :)
