Beacons Of Light:Lighthouse by ZHANG YING

Game Introduction :

The Beacon of Light is a 2D side-scrolling adventure game in the parkour genre, set on a remote island far from the rest of the world, depicting the life of a Kiwi bird that guards the lighthouse.

At the end of the world, on an island, on a rainy night, there are flying birds and Kiwi who guards the Lighthouse.

Kiwi, the lighthouse keeper, carries his lamp to transmit light to the lighthouse, delivering hope to countless birds flying in the dark night.

In the game, you will play as a Kiwi bird, carrying a lamp to search for the tower in the dark night. The wick of the lamp gradually shortens, and the road is long and dark. Wish you a safe journey.

About us:

Kiwi birds are nocturnal and relatively small, usually about the size of an egg. Although they are birds, they cannot fly like other birds because their wings are relatively small and not strong enough to support them in the air. Additionally, the kiwi bird's bones are heavier than those of other flying birds, which also limits their ability to fly.

Despite not being able to fly, kiwi birds are very strong walkers and runners on the ground. They have strong and well-developed leg muscles that allow them to quickly move through various environments such as forests and mountains, making this an important way for them to survive and find food.

We take Kiwi as our protagonist, and connect it with game elements such as the night and lighthouse, just as the lighthouse illuminates the way for the lonely boat in the sea, and Kiwi delivers hope to countless flying birds. We also want to convey love and emotion to players through the game.

I hope you will enjoy our game.

Great art style! It's exactly the kind of style I like visually, and the gameplay has some interesting and fun design elements buried within it~~

I like the art style and the ambience of the waves. I understand it's the point of the game but I found the fact you only have a tiny light source around the player kind of annoying. Having achievements in a game jam is sick!

Quite enjoyed this one. Very lovely art style, the Kiwi with his lamp was super cute as well. The savespots in between helped in making it not too punishing to do risky jumps. Quite tight time limit, but after you had a few tries in the levels, that was fine, you just had to know what you are doing. Thank you for making it. :)

Overall it's a good indie mini-game,with its own unipue art style, and some very interesting achievements,I unlocked two of them during the gameplay, for example, when you first entered the gmae and didn't konw much about your surroundings,I jumper off the cliff behind me at the beginning and unlocked "dead at the beginning"to reward me for thiis funny move.
Using a cactus to block the way is an interesting idea, but just by touching teh cactus and dying can be a bit disappointing because I don't know what's going on, maybe our little wiki bird is a little vulnerable, isn't it? Regarding the time limit, I know it's to motivate players to move forward, but the time given is a bit short, which kind of limits my desire to explore the world.

Atmosphere and artstyle were really cool, I liked the contrast between light and dark. Also achievement system was interesting, wish I had a way to see what achievements are there (unless I'm missing something). The path that I had to follow was sometimes unclear tho, maybe you could put arrow signs to indicate where to go. Nice job overall :)

Movement felt good, and I like the art and the use of darkness as a mechanic to encourage exploration. At some point the counter stopped counting down (stayed at 0), but then it came back seemingly at random a minute or two later. Overall I like the game feel.

Great visuals and ambience. Adding a sound affect to jumping would make it feel a lot more impactful.

What an adorable little bird! The game does seem a bit on the short side, but on the other hand, you've absolutely nailed the controls and atmosphere. The platforms did kiiiinda take me out of it, as everything else had this really great nature vibe and those just felt like they didn't really fit in. But honestly? That's a pretty minor complaint and the rest of the game is fun and the achievements caught me off guard (in a good way).

The absence of any sound other than the sound of the waves had an interesting relaxing effect on me, I liked the visuals. I loved the shaking of the kerosene lamp that the bird kept in its net. The levels were a bit confusing, I think the goal is to go to the next save point before the counter is reset. I think the collider of the stones around is a bit too big, and finally I think the gameplay would feel a little smoother if the moving platform was a one-way platform.

It turned out to be a very atmospheric game, but I don't really see the point of trying to make allegories on game james. Even though it was nice to run, but I didn't know anything new for myself, to be honest. But thanks for such a gaming experience).

I love the atmosphere and the narrative concept of this game, great job! It does need some polishing in terms of quality of life platformer features (see below), but if those are added, I could totally see this as a relaxing game for rainy days. The art style is unique and the message is beautiful - maybe add some calm piano music to the mix and I'm sure it'll make everyone who plays it feel warm and fuzzy inside!

Some constructive criticism:
- It's possible that some people can't play your game because they cannot unpack .rar files. I didn't run into that problem, thankfully, but **.zip files** are more common as far as I know.
- There are two important quality of life features that every platformer should have: jump buffering (which this game does have - very good! :white_check_mark:) and **coyote time**. Maybe you do have coyote time and it's just very, very brief, but if you don't, you should give it a high priority! Otherwise, players will feel like the game sometimes ignores their input. Another such feature is corner correction (which makes it so the player is pushed around a corner when they touch it only by a pixel or two), but that might take a little more effort, so maybe it's out of scope for a game jam.
- Thin platforms should be **semi-solid** if possible. (I heard they're a bit of a pain to implement in Unity though, so I won't hold it against you.)
- I believe the horizontally moving platforms in the last level had different **cycle intervals** which caused them to go out of sync. It wasn't too big of an issue this time, but it's something to keep in mind because it can easily feel frustrating, especially in games with a time limit.

I really liked the graphic art! Maybe the game could be implemented with other sounds (the walking sound or the "explosion"...) and (but this is just an idea, beacuse I appreciated the game) you could add other side ways to collect objects or something else (or maybe life if you add items to avoid).

Really cool graphics, as well as controls!
It lacks audio feedbacks and it was a bit too short.
Great work to everyone ! :)
