Go Go Truck by zubspace

[raw]
made by zubspace for Ludum Dare 53 (JAM)

For some reason you turn out to be the last delivery truck driver in town. It's a big and busy place, so you better get going and fill those orders! You need the money to buy fuel, which isn't cheap. And all you really craved was the vacation ticket at the store...

Here’s a gif for your pleasure:

gogotruck.gif

How to play:

WASD to drive. E to pick up orders or to enter a gas station, but you need to stand still first. Use the mini map as a guide, but always keep an eye on your fuel level!

The post-jam versions supports gamepad.

Features:

  • Large city environment.
  • Multiple quests.
  • Crazy car physics.
  • Autonomous traffic.
  • Ingame music and sound effects.

Postjam Additions:

Had so much fun that I simply had to extend the game a bit.

  • Better car physics. (Less toppling over)
  • More quests.
  • Better progression (easy money)
  • Shop / Car upgrades.
  • Stars... (You'll understand if you pick them up)
  • Gamepad support.
  • Various small fixes and improvements (too many to count...)

Tech

  • Godot 4.0.2 with C# written in Visual Studio
  • Blender 3.5
  • Affinity Designer
  • Paint.NET
  • FL Studio
  • SFXR

I use my own Godot Base Code hosted here: https://github.com/ZuBsPaCe/godot-base-code-csharp

By the way: It was the first time that I used C# in combination with Godot and it's a game changer. GDScript in v4 is awesome, but C# just takes it to the next level. Strong typing, refactoring, better debugging, interfaces and abstract classes, etc... etc... I'm blown away. Unfortunately no Web Export yet, but that will hopefully change in the future.

Don't know if it was a bug or what but the camera just constantly sways up and down, bouncing all the time, I got through one mission but the camera was literally making me nauseous.

I like the 3D graphics and the map, and I found dodging the other vehicles to be very challenging. The sound effects and music are also pretty good, however there is some crackling and popping in the audio (but its seems to be fixed in the Post-Jam download).

Cool game and good job!

I had so much fun! I mean please remove my drivers license (In game, of course... I don't have one in real life.... Which after this, thank god, imagine the deaths).

I may have caused havoc all over town, but you'll have something to read about in the papers tomorrow in the very least.

The graphics were cute, clean and consistent, the driving felt like punching in your sleep in the best way, I want to emphasize it's a good and comedic thing, but it's the best way I can describe it.

A real romp, if you keet developing it, it would be a lot of fun to get the police chasing you while you go about your deliveries for all the damage you cause during another day of your 9-5.

@raptor851 Thanks for your feedback. You're right about the camera. Because it was attached to the rigidbody car its movement was all over the place. I fixed it in the postjam version.

@sean-atterbury Thanks a lot! Had some issues with the crackling sound, too, but that could be a Godot problem I can't fix.

@belle Thank you so much! I really had a lot of fun this time and sooooo many ideas, too many actually. I wanted it to be finished for the compo but just ran out of time. I think it has a lot of potential, like different tasks, trucks and upgrades, car damage and repairs, various achievements or maybe even building up a delivery empire, where you have to manage other drivers. I can only dream... Thanks again for your feedback, I really appreciate it!

Despite some issues I actually kinda like this game. One of the thing I like most about this game is that you added other cars to the map. When you drive around an empty city it doesn't feel the same as it would if there are cars driving around with you. As for something I absolutely hate about this game is the addition of other cars to the map. They kept flipping me! At one point I even got flipped by an invisible car xD.

I think you could improve this game a lot by doing a couple of things. First, despawn cars that are out of view and far enough away. This will at the very least stop them from piling up on each other and completely blocking a road. Second, if you could lower the center of mass of the player car this would make it less likely to flip.

Beyond that I think if you tightened up the steering of the car this could be really fun.

Isn't it great when a game jam really sparks your creativity and you get tons of ideas while working?? I also felt the same, there's never enough time though!

I was going to suggest calming down the camera and making the map easier to ready, which I see you fixed in the post-jam version. I found this really fun and the driving was just the right amount of chaotic for a game like this, the only suggestion would be to subtly straighten the car on long straightaways to help me make slight steering adjustments so I can really build up speed and make those hard deliveries! The snake delivery cracked me up!

Liked the car movement, felt pretty intuitive to me. I flipped over quite a bit (though I know that was fixed in the postjam version). I did find that flipping over/running out of gas pretty much stopped you from completing a quest. Fun game overall

@drazil100 Thank you for your feedback! I actually like the stupidity of the autonomous cars! I find it hilarious if one of them runs into another and creates chaos on the streets... xD In the post-jam version I despawn and respawn stuck cars when they are far away from the player. But yeah, they can also be a nuisance... About the vehicle phyiscs: I was pleasantly surprised that Godot already provided VehicleBody3D and VehicleWheel3D components. But it's such a pain to configure! There are more than a dozen parameters which you can tweak and you really need to be lucky to find a set which works. Anyway, thanks again for playing!

@reef Thanks a bunch! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Had a lot of fun creating stupid quests xD

@thefatgalaboo Yeah, balancing a game in the game jam (or compo for that matter) is always hard for me, because I rarely have time to play the game myself. Difficulty is all over the place, but I think I could fix some stuff in the post-jam version. Thanks for your input!

Funny game, but the fuel price is so high, it's... well, realistic I think? ^^
In my opinion, stopping the car is a little bit too long.

@yoanndeplo Yes, you're right. It takes a lot of time to build up some money. Was not able to find a nice balance in time. I fixed that in the post jam version. There you get more money the more tasks you finish. Thanks for playing 👍

Game was very fun I put some time into all of the post-jam quests.

This honestly has a lot of potential! I wish there was some vibey music on or a radio system of some sort! A night time level would have been sick also. The controls were fun but sometimes felt a bit too slow.. and I didn't hear any engine noises which would have been great. Well done! Keep updating it :)

Game is fun and works great! Looks great as well. Would be nice to be able to inspect/start quests without slowing down so much, but that's a minor thing! Nice job!

@hugetube Thank you for playing! Had a lot of fun coming up with some crazy quests :)

@hani Very nice ideas! There's a lot of stuff which could spice it up a bit! I also thought about a day-and-night cycle, but I was not sure if the performance could keep up with all those car lights with shadows. But would be a nice experiment :)

@praccen Thanks a bunch! Yeah some kind of arcade mode would be fun! Thanks for your feeback!

Nice entry! I really like the variety of quests in the game. If I could make one wish it would be to make vehicle collisions even more spectacular, but it's totally fine already

Nice game! It is nit picky but I think if the collisions between the player truck and the cars were bouncier they would get stuck less. Very cool to see what godot can do!

@roboolet Thanks for your feedback! Yeah, good idea, that would be awesome. I think particle effects and car parts falling off would be a great start. Noted.

@jeff-kerman Oh yeah, I need to try that. Could be fun if other cars were like jelly, maybe  Thank you for playing!

Traffic keep stacking on some points, sometimes it is about 10 cars and it is impossible to drive around. Usually that happened when multiple agents compete for the same waypoint but neither can reach it because of that competition.

Also, games without fuel mechanics are always better. Fuel is almost never fun.

Game itself is fine, everything works and graphics is decent.

@kohcepba Thanks for your feedback. Yeah those other cars are stupid and don't react to each other. Cars piling up makes you think about other routes you need to take, so I don't think it's too bad. If you're far away stuck cars will respawn on another tile.

About the fuel: Yes you're right, it's not really fun to manage. Probably the game would be better without.

Thanks for playing!

Cute little racing game. I loved the graphics and the expansive world map. The other drivers were really relentless though
