Tough Crowd by Apple Dash

[raw]
made by Apple Dash for Ludum Dare 53 (JAM)

Play as a comedian and deliver unfunny jokes to a crowd of people.

Press Space to say the next word in a joke. Try to feel the rhythm and say the joke in a way that you think would be funny.

Also, there's a question mark in the top right of the screen, it tells you how to play and what this game is all about.

I liked your original take on the delivery theme. The jokes definitely had the 'groan' factor! I wasn't sure if changing the speed that I pressed space bar affected the laughs/outcome. Took me a few tries as I kept accidentally skipping the final screen.

Not sure what the exact rules are but I like the mood of the game!

Got 84% as a score

I liked this game! reminds me a lot of my own entry 😅

I played through a few times, trying to figure out what the secret was. My best playthrough ended up being the one where I tried to time it how i would if I was actually telling the jokes, which is good! nice work :)

Nice and fun game. Found myself reading the jokes and trying to match pressing space with it and found it pretty funny. Great job!

@badcop I have played your game now and _oh my god_, it's uncanny. Funny thing, I actually implemented the classic rhythm game slider that shows the exact timing of the beats, but then decided to do something a bit unconventional and force players to go off the _feeling_ of the joke.

Got a couple of good chuckles out of me, though it took me a few attempts to realize exactly how to play

Is it a mixture of clicker and visual novel?
I correctly understood that the whole gameplay is to press the spacebar?
What determines the assessment at the end - I still do not understand. I only realized that if you press the spacebar slowly, then there will be no laughter, which is a very interesting solution.

This was an interesting take on the theme. I couldn't tell exactly how to get a better score but 1 run through i got 70% so that seems good even though the game said it wasn't. /shrug

I like the interpretation of the topic and the graphic (also the animations are great!), but the whole gameplay is not really fun. Maybe it is a good idea to give a player at least a hint of the tempo with the music?

I played it through twice just to make sure I had understood things, and I noticed on the second time that I had not at all the first play-through. Or it depends, I was a very bad comedian the first run and that felt quite in tune with the game. Interesting mechanics with score depending on timing and getting the feedback from the audience between the jokes.

But it was quite hard to know exactly what was a good delivery or not and it would have been nice if the game did give you more hints while performing as it in its present form doesn't really encourage that much retries.

Several times I accidentally started telling the next joke right after the previous, so it would have been nice if there were some stuff stopping that a bit. E.g. needing to press space and extra time between jokes and/or a bit of time when a new joke is revealed when you cannot start telling that.

Very funny game loved the mamamamamamamamamamamamamamama from the comedian, played through it a bunch of times just to hear all the jokes.

Nice jokes, played a few times, got the punchlines in rhythm. Maybe sfx is a bit annoying, but it's a very nice idea and design, awesome delivery!

It's very cute! The dark room sets a great mood. Can't decide whether its good or bad that there isn't much rhyme or reason to what makes a joke stick. I tried anticipatory silence, things like that, but not sure it helped~ Was definitely funny tho! Would be cool to see an expanded version with a bit more feedback maybe.

I LOVE the funny egg man!

Honestly though, that's one of my big takeaways from this little game. I can't put my finger on it, but the design of the stupid comedian guy lives rent-free in my head.

Really enjoyed the game, I'm looking forward to your next project! Keep up the awesome work!!

Short, but funny! I liked saying the joke out loud to make sure my timing was correct. Like others have mentioned, it was annoying that I couldn't read what the next joke was before pressing space and thereby starting with the first word. But good job, I like the atmosphere as well!

I like this take on the theme! The talking sound effect and laugh tracks were great. I think if you were going to work on it more, having some UI that shows what the "right" rhythm is would help! Nice work!

Also the comedian appearing through the curtain is hilarious... nice job :)

lol B is for bad indeed. 72. I enjoyed the Animal Crossing style speech, though I feel like it threw my rhythm off a little? The slow mo entry through the curtain was pretty funny.

Really great interpretation of theme.

Okay, very clever take on the theme, "comedic delivery" hadn't even occurred to me as a possible interpretation! This is great, I like the Animal Crossing vocal sounds. I do wish a little bit that you could press the button once for each _syllable_ rather than once for each _word_, to really capture the rhythm of speech, but overall this is quite clever, well done.

Funny game. I found the flow of the jokes and got an A. It was very entertaining and well made with a great mood.

Very original concept, probably the most original take on the theme I've seen this time around! Such a unique experience. Well done.
