The Collector’s Due by GreenRadiation

[raw]
made by GreenRadiation for Ludum Dare 58 (JAM)

~~UPD: The web version isn't working right now. This is due to a bug with computer shader reproducibility on the web. I'll try to fix it ASAP, but for now you can play the Windows version. For now, I'll remove the "web" label from the game's cover.~~

UPD2: Yaaaay, we got the WEB version! Just press fullscreen button before playing

This is a horror game about a Collector who lives in your closet and wakes up every Halloween to expand his collection...

Hey everyone! This time we decided to make another horror game. Margarita Pfannkuchen put a lot of effort into the visuals — I think you’re going to love them. And no, we didn’t use any AI. To fully enjoy the graphics, please download the PC version!

We also tried to create an original soundtrack and record as many sounds from scratch as possible. So listen closely — you might recognize the noises of everyday objects hidden in the wind or in the crunch of a neck.

You’ll only need a mouse to play. During gameplay segments, press Space to open your notebook with notes, and V to make symbol guesses.

The game contains cheap jump scares and murder scenes — so consider yourself warned.

Many people are asking about the game’s theme in the comments. So here’s my (the game designer’s) comment. Honestly, the theme is “Collector.” And I find it uninteresting that everyone is creating games about collecting things. Collecting trash, collecting souls, collecting rewards for completing levels. 95% of games are literally about anything, because absolutely every game has a moment where you collect anything. Absolutely every game fits this theme. But we wanted to implement something that would be truly deeply connected to the game jam theme. And if we’re talking about “Collector,” I think it’s quite important to have some kind of collector in the game. Again, to avoid being trivial, it’s much more interesting when the collector isn’t the main character, but someone else, on the other hand. So we can watch someone else collect something, and we’re just a pawn in their game. That was our idea around this theme.

We also made a little devlog! :3

This game is incredibly cohesive. I'm amazed by its logic: using the music box, observing the patterns in the brain, and finally comparing them to confirm. The whole process for the collector feels so natural, as if it could actually happen in real life. The visuals, music, and creativity—I'd rate all of them highly.

I liked it — I completed it 100%! When the pictures started overlapping, I thought that would be the end for me, but I managed to finish it :) Not sure about the theme, but the vibe is really cool!

A very polished experience, it felt like a slice out of a full game! As everyone else has already mentioned the Art team really knocked it out of the park with this one. Both the visuals and the music set up the atmosphere perfectly. well done

The puzzles are simple yet challenging, doesn't feel dragged out, amazing art and atmosphere. Cool game! the "collector" design reminded me of the collector from Darkest Dungeon

The connection to the theme feels a bit tacked-on. Maybe it could be more integrated into the core gameplay!

Beautiful art! Simple mechanic and engaging setting. Probably a suitble template to expand to a bigger game if additional gameplay features added. Wholesome picture here at LD page btw

Very cool art style and music. The moment with the head in the X-ray reminded me of Disco Elysium)

@sylviachord amazing compliment honestly, thank you so much! I was worried a lot about cohesiveness and consistency of the game and the style. Our game designer and programmer worked really hard on this stuff, they are the coolest

@noobman64 thank you so much! The art team was only me though :D

Графика такая классная, я просто не могу!
История очень интересная, а музыка полностью передаёт атмосферу. Даже не знала, что можно сделать такую потрясающую игру всего за три дня. И у вас такая милая команда!)

The music and the art were wonderful. You successfully created a mysterious and eerie atmosphere. I couldn't help getting nervous. I like this creepy collector...

Why can I only find three patterns? Can you give me some hints?
Pfannkuchen
Oct 10th · 16:06 UTC
@huaqing hi! In one or two scenarios there are only three patterns at all. Only in the last puzzles there are four puzzles and two of four are intersecting, so they are harder to distinguish!

I really like the atmosphere and sound in this game!
I’d like to see a bit more challenge in the gameplay that involves understanding the images.
Overall, it’s a really cool game!

Very polished in visual art and SFX/music, and all well put together. Amazing in this regard.

Now the game design is a bit simple, fun but repetitive and a bit shallow.

Theme, I can see the collecting there, a bit tacked on may be, but works.

Very good entry in general.
