Death or Taxes by atsh

[raw]
made by atsh for Ludum Dare 58 (COMPO)

Play on itch.io.

His Eminence, King Spendsalot, has grand designs for a marvelous village:

  • A sheep-based economy with 7 resources

  • Elaborate production chains spanning 9 buildings

  • An overseas market with import and export

  • Needs for food, drink, and clothing

  • A complex tax system with tariffs, vat and income tax

My name is Tax Murphy. I'm a tax collector - and I don't care about any of that.

I just chase workers with red coins above their heads, and watch the gold coin above mine go up.

That's all you need to know.

Fantastic game! The rule is simple but the gameplay is well-designed and in-depth. Truly satisfying watching the number rise faster and faster.
If this game is on steam I'll definetely buy it LOL.

Love the detail on the economoy simulation. It's easy to collect taxes when everyone goes to the same place.

@seven-z Thanks for the kind words!

@staticrose It's a good point about the people clustering. Thanks for the feedback!

@atsh Didn't neccessarily mean it as a criticism. It adds a bit of a tactical element to wait in the right spot. Maybe something to expand upon.

It's cool that you made a little tutorial at the beginning. Nice game!

Okay, I love that you built an entire self-driven economy and demand chain around your fictional kingdom, only to make me run like a fool after all of those pesky little villagers to collect what is rightfully ours. Awesome idea, and nicely done graphics! It could have done with some music, and I found it a bit difficult to reach 2500, but the FROMAGER (hehe) ultimately did it.

Great name too!

@aleksey-salion agreed, it could've made the navigation more interesting

@klausklapper Thanks for the kinds words! I totally agree about the music - need to learn how to make it :)

If I don’t collect all their money so harshly on certain days, will people get more coins the next day?
I mean no harm, but it seems like I’m a pickpocket following them around, haha, and I really enjoy getting money from them.
I really love how each character has things they do every day, it makes the whole game lively, like it truly builds a village. Great game!

A small suggestion: maybe consider adding a button to spend your current coins to re-roll the upgrade choices? This way, players will have to decide whether to spend coins for an extra chance. Either way, this is already a fantastic game, now I’ll go steal some more money—I mean, collect taxes!

The theme "collector" was used in such a creative way—collecting taxes as the core mechanic is really fresh and fun. The gameplay is simple but super fun: there's something oddly enjoyable about collecting money! There also some strategy of economics makes game worth to retry. Well done!

Thank you so much for your kind words!
The workers keep the money for then next day :) I actually thought of an upgrade where you can increase the interest on the accumulated money.. I didn't implement it because 3 options is not too many for such a short game, but your suggestion makes a lot of sense in that regard and in hindsight I coul've expand the upgrade roster

@nekowei I was pretty happy with the fact that several strategies exists, so thank you for noticing it, and I'm glad you enjoyed the game

Great game feels very polished. I love the graphics, especially the tileset. The game start with the tutorial is also really nice. The upgrades feel a bit tame, maybe there could be more escalation. Overall, super well made!

Nice well polished game - was fun learning the villager patterns! The beginning few days felt a bit slow as there wasn't that much to do, but it ramped up nicely as the days went on. Might also have been a bit more interesting if the villagers had some randomness to their movement, but otherwise this was a great jam game! Well done!

Thanks for the feedback! Agree about the upgrades - I tried to balance the economy under the hood, and it was difficult to give powerful upgrades like this. BTW I'm a sucker for good conversion as you can imagine, so loved you game!

@hulien22 Agree with both your feedbacks! I actually do have variation for the worker speed to keep them from walking on each other, but I could use some more for sure. Glad you enjoyed it! And I enjoyed your game too - nice to see we both tackled taxes from very different angles :)

Nice game, managed to get 2,861 coins. I wanted to calculate the different variations between market trade tax, income tax, market imports etc. but I ended up just increasing market import tax and a couple of market trade. I was able to camp the villagers at the market so it wasn't too complicated to get the 2,500, although I did find it to be well balanced. Kudos for submitting a well-rounded entry to Compo.

Curious if the king was you and you were originally overscoping? :D

@jose-bonilla Yes I planned for the economics factors to be more involved. Guilty as charged about over scoping :) thanks for playing!

Well, that was fun. Good game loop. Each game has unique running pattern, so it is re-playable. ) A bit better graphics and this could be a good title.

Fun to play and I definitely appreciated the simulation. I played it a few times to work out what was going on. It appears that you can destroy tax revenues by setting VAT higher than tariffs, creating a tax loophole where people buy from the market since that's cheaper than buying from their neighbor, and reducing income tax revenues at the same time since people can never sell more than the market demand (which isn't affected by people buying things from the market?).

@tesseract
You are correct about everything:)

Workers always prefer to buy from the market if the taxes there are cheaper. Currently the market has infinite supply, which means that VAT should never be higher than tariffs.

Income tax is one of the "hidden" features of the game - when workers buy from the each other, the money goes to the building so to speak, and each day the worker pulls all the money from the building as income, and that's where the tax come in. So if you kill internal trade with high VAT, you also kill the income tax.

The market demand is indeed random. In hindsight it could be cool to change the demand to make things more dynamic.

It's actually cool that you noticed all of these things. Thanks for playing!

Really cool entry that felt really polished. Took me a few days to figure out what was going on, but when I got those upgrades I started to get going. Had to replay to finish it, but that didn't matter because I was having fun. Great work.

That was an interesting little game. The subtleties are... well, subtle! It was pretty easy but it was a lot more active than I expected just looking at it. Good fun :)
