Home Sweet Island by Archimagus

[raw]
made by Archimagus for Ludum Dare 58 (JAM)

A barely finished island "survival" game. You've washed up on an island. Walk around and collect things, bring them back and place them around your camp site to make it more home like. Given this is my first game back in a long time and neither of us have any art skills all of the assets are off the Unity Asset Store. I've opted out of graphics and audio (not that there is any audio) Not super proud of this one, but not bad to knock the dust off.

The LDJam embedded version behaves a bit weird with the cursor and stuff It's a bit better on the Itch site.

Had fun exploring the environment, drank wine, and read a book on the beach (in my imagination).

@siria-games chill man, most people don't even finish a game in a jam, these guys should be proud they made something. I'm sure you've made some "trash" games in your career, like everyone has when they're just starting out. Try giving constructive feedback or don't leave any comments at all.

@deruitda Thanks, but it doesn't bother me. I've made a lot of games and this one is among the worst  Still I appreciate the help.

Stuff like this happens. You'll do better next time!

Hey! Just wanted to drop a few words.
First — it’s really cool that you let players set up the area around the campfire. I made mine super cozy by gathering everything I could find.
Second — the game basically has bunny hopping, and it’s so much fun jumping around the mountains :D
I was also impressed that you went the extra mile and added death by water — with animation and effects! And there’s even an inventory!

I saw a really harsh comment here, and honestly, I think that’s unfair. Making something like this with just two people in only three days is awesome. Don’t let negative feedback drag you down — it’s clear you tried to come up with your own idea and bring it to life in such a short time. Everyone starting out in game dev deserves support, not random hate.

Keep going — you’re on the right track!

@solvenoff Thanks for the nice words.

In a way though, they almost hurt more than the blatant rude comment

> Everyone starting out in game dev deserves support

> Keep going — you’re on the right track!

I've been making games since like 2004, with something like 30 game jams under my belt so looking like a newb hurts. But I know it's deserved on this one. Been away for a couple years and bit off a game that would have been ambitious when I was super active and up to date on the tools.

Anyway, thanks again, I do appreciate the comment and the kind words.

The island is still fun to explore even if its built out of unity store assets.

I could not figure out how to put stuff down but I collected everything... wait that's actually the theme, hmm.
There isn't much to say besides yay for no fall damage. It's kind of inspiring me to do an exploration game next jam, it sounds fun to focus less on coming up with some fancy gameplay and just create something visual for once.

@starduster Thanks.
@poshdan Tab or I to open the inventory - and yeah, that was our thought. Lets try and do something visual for a change. Except neither of us had used the terrain editor before, and were both pretty bad at finding assets 😬

I tried playing — got to the lighthouse, picked up all the items, then fell into the water :(
Something’s off with the camera, it doesn’t rotate. Overall, there are some basic mechanics — +1 for the effort!

Wow! It’s a shame the game isn’t finished, it looks really promising! Every now and then I like playing 3D games, though they tend to be more complex. Still, the freedom and immersion are on another level compared to 2D. I really enjoy exploring the environment. Seriously, great entry, awesome game!

I walked around a bit, grabbed all I could from the lighthouse, walked back to the tent, went for a swim and all went black... or pink at the bottom :)

Had some fun exploring the area and taking anything I saw. Unfortunate that over-scope/over-ambition took another victim, though, now you have goals on what to improve on. If my project was in this state, I would've called it quits for this jam, but you put in effort to get it out the door so awesome work!

I enjoyed exploring the iland, maybe just a little free to use backgroud music would have made the mood for a litle hike game!

The very first thing I noticed (and felt) was the very low FOV, even got a small headache in under a minute of gameplay. Just like the description says, you just walk around and collect stuff, not much else to say on that matter. Apparently there was an inventory by the looks of the comments, completely missed that. Was kinda weird that there is apparently no audio in the game but there absolutely is if you jump in the water and "drown"...

Don't be sad, the important thing is to participate in the jam. I couldn't finish mine either lol
I spent some time wandering around your map and picking up random things xD
