Pinky's Nightmare by zenmumbler

[raw]
made by zenmumbler for LD33 (JAM)
Pinky the ghost went to sleep after a long day of chasing Pac around a maze. But instead of a peaceful slumber he ends up in his worst nightmare. He is stuck in the maze and the door to the ghost base is locked! Find the 4 keys in the maze to unlock the door, but avoid the Abominations!

--

Arrow keys or WASD to move around. The game plays like a more confusing version of RE1, with tank controls, overhead fixed cameras, etc. If you die you'll just get put back at your starting position, you'll keep the keys you've collected.

--

I got a long way but ended up short on time to do audio, which would have added a lot of atmosphere, but hey. One person team.

Tech: WebGL. The only library code I used was gl-matrix because typing in tons of matrix manipulation functions is not very productive.

I tested this on Chrome, Firefox and Safari (all latest) and it seems to work fine on all of them. I just hope Windows and Linux browsers will work too. Only hard requirement is WebGL.

Liked it! Great take on the theme.

Cool concept, I like the idea and definitely feels creepy going through the foggy maze.

Nice 3d graphics. That looks pretty difficult to do. The controls were odd. But anyway, good job.

Interesting idea, but there are a few things that keep me from enjoying the experience. Control choice would have worked better if there was an indicator on the player model that showed you which direction you were currently facing. When the camera angles switched it was very disorienting because the player model looks the same from all sides. Also, the lighted regions of the maze were not enough of a landmark for me to ever feel like I knew where I was going. Perhaps a smaller maze with better visual landmarks would be more reasonable.

Great game! It would be nice to have some clarity though. The camera should really be behind the player instead of stationary. There should also be a way to see which direction Pinky will go (without moving)
A minimap would also be nice, but would maybe make it too easy.

Nice, different by the controls and the camera :)

FirebrushStudios: indeed. I changed from first person to 3rd person static cameras halfway and while I feel they aid the atmosphere, it was quite a gamble and it is indeed disorienting; and this was with a LOT of camera tweaking to make sure you wouldn't flickering through many views or looking at walls. Makes one appreciate the effort that went into the old PS1 games.
Thanks for playing.

Great idea! The camera angles made it scary! You could have added some jaws-like music:) I will now go to sleep and have a nightmare. Thanks!

Very interesting in both the viewpoint and the execution- I would have loved some sound but the mood is great, pinky feels small and frail wandering huge caverns only to meet a giant, cracked stone pac man. Nice job!

I really liked the look of this game. only wished that pacman was moving smooth too. the camera angles was a cool feature.

Daukan: I moved the pac-men in this stuttering way as an experiment to see if I could make them less relatable. In this game they are supposed to be these mockeries of a "real" pac-man, but it didn't really work out the way I wanted.

Neat idea! The camera angles and the lighting setup a nice mood. I wish you could hear Pacman chomping in the distance and getting closer and the controls could use a bit more work. Overall I really like this entry!

Very solid entry. Seemed like I could sometimes hug the wall and get by the Pac-men without them hitting me, which might have made it a bit too easy? Still very well done thought, good job. :)

If only there had been an ambient soundtrack and some tactically placed SFX this would've been true nightmare fuel. Like other people have pointed out there should've been some kind of indication as to where Pinky was looking (eyes ;)). I think the tank controls and fixed camera angles worked wonderfully for what you were going for. Solid entry all around, good job!

Well that was nice. It is quite a unique take on the theme, normally the monster but in this case not.

Graphics brings the mood, nice.
It took me some time to get used to the directions. Feel much better after that.

The camera is so cool. Without any landmarks it's very disorienting to glide around.

How many Pacmans are in this game?!

There are 5 Pacs wandering around randomly. My best I believe is 2 min 36 sec.

At first I thought you really need an indicator showing the direction the player's facing, but after playing it was actually pretty intuitive. Couldn't find any keys and often just got stomped as soon as I got into a room and had to start over. Nice use of the theme though.

i like the concept. without any face or eyes its hard to tell what direction you are facing. The camera switching made it difficult for me to remember where i last visited (minimap maybe?). Congrats on ur submission

I kind of liked how there were multiple stationary cameras. The only thing this needs is creepy music and maybe a minimap? If you do put a minimap I think it should be small so that you can't see the whole maze, and ghosts and keys shouldn't show up on it. Just to make it easier to get back to the starting point.

Nice game! Graphics were simple but very effective. The theme twist too, simple but nicely done! The camera movement made me a bit dizzy, but added greatly to the mood! Navigation was hard, but I guess that's the idea of a maze xp Missed sound, but you can only do much ^^;
Anyway, great entry!

Btw, isn't Pinky a girl?

the originality of this reverse pacman is the fact that it's in 3D. The controls are a little fuzzy. Would be easy I the map was always there to help. Nice.

PS: We have fixed our game, if you want to see it again. ^^
Thank you.
