Gamedud by Prunus Padis

made by Prunus Padis for Ludum Dare 58 (COMPO)

Gamedud manual:

  • You gotta catch all the games by beating them!
  • Can be played with keyboard or controller
  • Move with wasd or using controller
  • Space / A / X to interact
  • Start or Esc for menu
  • Can you beat all 4 games?
  • All of them have ingame manual included!

AI coding tools were sometimes used to do simple stuff.

BUG notice: Seems like I did a baaaad Opsie and tied some physics stuff to framerate so it might run way too fast in somegames.

Interesting idea of what to collect, you did well to make so many different games within a game. The gameboy style graphics and sounds were very nice and nostalgic.

The mini game concept is a nice spin of the theme!

Art style and music gave a nice nostalgia trip - maybe someone could say the art style is not derivate enough though (?). Fun nevertheless!

For the reference to Pokemon from gameboy

@nash You might be right on that it on the gray area of derivate art and characters might slip on the not derivate enough. Expecially the npc since I used way too much ref to the orginal to get the feel kinda okay with few pixels available in small time (last hours). Kinda hard to do regocnizeable homage without straight copy when using low res sprites (I tried to use nonstandard sprite size of 18x18)

That "ending" gave me a good laugh. Great that you managed to make three games in such a short time. The Pokémon parody was very funny.

Loved the art brought me back to my gameboy time, the top shooter seemed a bit unbalanced tho but it might be a skill diff

Interesting approach! Not good at platformer or top down shooter, but even that there is a story game for me lol

@jonction Yeah the topdown is much harder (easier with controller imo), but instead of balancing it well i decide to keep at is and let the player get to play game 4th even with 2 completed games. There was also plans to have variations of genres so difficulty could also vary.

Ah! recursive ending!!

I thought I will never beat the platformer, and than I played the shooter and it was even tougher lol

I think there is friction with the platforms - which got me a few time. with platformer you only want friction from the bottom, and on top bottom games non at all. I also felt like I wanted to move diagonally

Still, very nice art and sound - well done!

Love the Pokémon-style art, and the gameplay is quite rich;). However, the movement with 'WASD' feels a bit slowT^T. It would be great if could speed things up a little

I really liked the theme variation in every game :D

Interesting idea to collect multiple small games. The ending first confused me and I was like "Is that how it's supposed to be?" but then it hit me...

Nice ending and nice entry!

Awesome idea for the theme, creating a collection of minigames for a 48 hour game jam is unhinged, but you managed to pull it off, great twist at the end too!

I like that someone's mind also went straight to Pokemon when the theme was announced. You really captured the art style of the early pokemon games. I did feel like the mini games were a little simple but I really liked the idea. Overall great entry.

Love the retro pokemon style and using geometric shapes for the minigames.

Cool game, I liked the mini-games and the end was clever.

You captured the feeling of Pokémon Red and Blue really well with the graphics and music. The minigames all work quite well. The movement in the top-down game could be a bit faster, and in the jump 'n' run, your jump slows down when moving along a wall. Overall, super charming and fun!

Bit tricky to play, but I like the retro Nintendo feel to the game!

Nice nostalgic little game. I appreciate the multiple playstyles within this one game and all of them quite good quality!

Hi, I played your game. Like the Pokemon vibe from old Gameboy. Especially the level with shooting - very funny to see weapons in Pokemon world. Visual novel game is hilarious :)

Love the style and theme of this one, but goodness me is it too punishing! 99 kills needed in top shot and when I hit a spike in the platformer I go back to the start! Didn't manage to complete this I am afraid, but nice entry.

Hahaha! I did not see that "ending" comming! Amazing!

Very cool to have all these different games in one. I can imagine it being a lot of work to implement! I really like the fact that the sprites are the same inbetween them. Topshot was really difficult but I'm glad I beat it and got to see the end.

A very clever take on the theme. It's a bit meta too as before starting, everyone is wondering about which kind of game they're going to make, and you just did 4 of them
The ending twist is very nice too, it made me play it one more time for fun !

If I make one slight addition, it would be to be able to move with D-pad on controller, to be able to fully control it as a Gameboy game.

Anyway great idea and good job !

@atsh i left some jank in there on purpose + save some time. I dream was to have couple of stages (evolutions) of platformers, with progressively better/complex jump (coyote time, button press lenght etc). This was also for shooter.

@designernap too bad it was too hard for you, i tried to balance between simple but hard enough for some challenge.

@yvanor or anybody else who wants a more secrets revealed try to quit gamedud at anypoint :). Yeah missing D-pad is a bad in the hindsight.

Impressive to make 4 games in one! I got almost Lazy Jones vibes if you remember that :)

Platformer was well executed, even buffer jumping :o

Shooter game I was at first like what I need 100 hits but then it went quite fast, this was by far the hardest one

Text game was funny I think I found all endings (INTRUDERD! xD)

And then ending made me go oooooohhh

Big plus having gamepad support, I played with that and it worked great. Would've liked to use dpad though :)

Nice gameboy aesthetic, I think it worked well for both audio and visuals.

Solid entry! Well done!!

3 gameplays in one, followed by an inception of gameplays ? Mind blowing.
Great art too.

Alright, I didn't expect those character controllers on a Pokemon looking game. It surprised me when it became a platformer, but when I got to Topshot, it was clear that there's a unique experience here! Getting chased by shapes is now a new fear unlocked.
