Tamago Bill by thegrottman
Hello there!
My name's thegrottman and it's my second LDJam submission. This time it's a shooter :)
Tamago Bill is a game inspired by my childhood with a westerny twist.
You play as a sheriff standing guard at the local chicken coops. Your task is to shoot any Tamago Bill's gangsters who want to steal the town's eggs.
You have your trusty revolver by your side and a basket to catch the eggs.
The theme for this LDJam was "Collector" and after some thinking, I decided to make a game where you catch falling objects. The objective did change a few times, but it settled on Wild West Egg Adventure.
I hope you will enjoy this short game :)
Controls: Mouse - almost everything. A/D - basket.
Changelog: - Added correctly embedding HTML version.
- Ver. 1.0.1.0. Fixing two issues:
- fixed the issue where the player wasn't able to shoot the last bandit with the last bullet.
- fixed the issue where the 3rd money upgrade basically undid the upgrade progress (reverted the exchange to 1 or 2 coins per egg). The updated version is available on itch.io.

It might have helped if you had added a timer to the levels since I felt i could just take my time and wait for an easy shot

Really brings me back to my childhood too, basically any of those NES zapper games, especially that one western themed one which I can't remember the name of. Also thematically something like Sunset Riders. Dang that game was awesome (and a quarter eater).
There's a bit of a exploit/mistake that you can just wait around and shoot carefully only when you can be sure you can catch the egg too. There would probably need to be a penalty or lose condition for also letting too many bandits get away or just have a time limit.
The coin rate upgrade also reset after losing once and still didn't allow upgrading it again which meant that I couldn't really keep up with the increasing prices but didn't have a need for them anyway since it was that short. Also a bit annoying that your last shot doesn't allow you to get the egg meaning if you have the exact same number of shots left as you need eggs, you'll still lose even if you shoot everything perfectly from that point on.
But yeah, fun game. With a bit more shooting gameplay variety (and getting rid of the "exploit" and more (and more interesting) upgrades to spend your eggs on, this could easily be fun for way longer than the current length of it. Good job! 👍
**edit:** Oh yeah, forgot! Needs more sound effects for sure. Everything that was there was good and didn't get annoying or too repetitive but would need an egg catch sound for sure. You aren't (at least for me) constantly paying that much full attention to the basket but just seeing it in your peripheral so an sound for when the egg was actually caught and you'd be free to move to the next one would have made it so much better.
I did think it's a little weird that I could just take my time and wait for the perfect enemy to show up and only then fire to save bullets, maybe having a time limit on each round would make it a little more intense/challenging. Or perhaps you get a streak bonus for getting many in a row without letting any escape. Also, I don't think the round should end when you're at zero bullets because this means I will never get to actually use my last bullet to collect an egg, since the round just ends immediately (so effectively your second from last bullet was your last real chance at getting an egg).
I really liked having the upgrades, gave me something to look forward to each round. I got 53 eggs at the end and i think I got all the upgrades.
**Overall this is really impressive for a single person team! You got sound, gameplay, upgrades, everything, all in one weekend! Awesome work**
Also the bandits really look like they're running away like chickens, laying eggs behind them in panic :P
The song is pretty good, but the rest of the audio is like 1 single sound effect.
But there is something about your game. While the audio design (except music), graphics and gameplay elements are all kind of basic, they all complement each other to make a greater experience in all regards. This in my opinion is a mark of a good start at designing games.
First of all, I loved the game! The style and the gameplay felt so retro, which was perfectly complemented by the music. It really goes to show that even if you didn't create the music, it just connects everything together. Personally, I wouldn't add more sound effects, but to each (commenter) their own.
If you want to improve upon the game, you could add a restraint that forces the player to deal with the hunchmen, as I could currently just ignore them if my basket was too far away.
The upgrades were nice, but I ended the game with over 300 coins without any further usage. This could be improved by adding more expensive late-game upgrades or another way to spend the excess currency.
You could actually use the background rocks and boulders to let the hunchmen hide when running away, adding a strategic element to pursuit.
These are genuinely just things to think about for a future development and did not influence my voting in the slightest! Great entry!
- What is the OperaGX / show console stuff at the bottom of the gamewindow?
- When shooting the last bullet, the game is immediately thrown into the exchange-mode screen. So the last egg can never be collected
- I feel like the bandits that are shot way before they're at the horizon, should drop two eggs or maybe a special egg that is worth more. To reward skill :-)
I love the music!
This was very fun! Juggling the basket and the shooting gallery was an unexpected challenge, but kept me thoroughly engaged throughout the entire play session!
The only real feedback I have is that it was a bummer that shooting your last bullet ended the game immediately - It basically means that you have one bullet fewer than the display indicates because you can never gain anything from the last bullet. It might be a good idea to only move onto the next screen if the last bullet missed, and otherwise let the player catch their last egg.
Overall, well done! :)
