Chicken Heist - LD58 Entry

tuto.png

Game Concept: Chicken Heist is a stealth strategy game where you play as a clever chicken thief sneaking through a farm to collect and steal precious eggs. Navigate the treacherous farmyard systematically, avoiding detection from various vigilant farm enemies. Your goal is to gather all eggs from each level and safely deposit them in nests before making your great escape!

Core Mechanics: - Turn-based Strategy: Play progresses in tactical turns. Use your precious time wisely! - Enemy AI: Multiple enemy types with unique behaviors - farmers patrolling set routes, dogs responding to sounds and pulling leashed targets, foxes stealing eggs, and tracking wolves that get faster when they spot you. - Detection Systems: Enemies have vision cones that change based on their alertness level. Sound effects travel across the farm and can alert distant enemies. Hide in bushes, tall grass, or hay bales to break their line of sight. - Day/Night Cycle: Dynamic lighting system that affects enemy vision range and creates an evolving atmosphere throughout gameplay. - Interactive Elements: Different terrain types make unique footstep sounds - careful where you step as noisy ground might give you away! - Level Progression: 10 challenging strategic levels with increasing difficulty and enemy setup complexity.

Characters & Features: - Chicken Player: Your stealthy protagonist with quick wits and careful planning - Farmer Enemy: Patroller who follows predetermined routes around the farm - Dog Enemy: Aggressive guard that chases sounds and can be leashed to specific areas - Fox Enemy: Cunning thief who steals your collected eggs if caught - Wolf Enemy: Persistent tracker that speeds up when pursuing - Interactive Terrain: Bushes for hiding, noisy gravel and wooden floors, safe nest delivery points

Technical Features: - Built with: Pure JavaScript using HTML5 Canvas for pixel-perfect rendering - Audio System: Dynamic sound effects and atmospheric background music - Visual Effects: Particle systems for footsteps, egg collection, and environmental effects - Responsive Design: Optimized for browser play with smooth performance - Progressive Difficulty: Hand-crafted levels with strategic enemy placement

I'm really happy with how Chicken Heist turned out! It captures the thrill of being a sneaky chicken in a world full of watchful enemies, with deep strategy emerging from the interaction between different enemy behaviors and environmental systems. Good luck to all the other Ludum Dare 58 participants - may your games be equally devious and delightful!

This game is so cool! I love everything about it! The tutorial seems a bit overwhelming at first, but everything falls into place so nicely! As I said: This is incredibly cool!

Nice entry here, looks good and is a cute game, but the music does get a bit much after a while!
Great work though. Good entry!

Very nice. Played a few levels. The in-game instructions felt overwhelming(and the game text wall description!), but once I started playing it wasn't too bad

Looks cool! The text dump at the start of the game could be smoother if the introduction to the game rules were gradual, either spread across levels or shown when you first encounter them.

Nice game! The visuals are cool and I like the theme, but the instructions at the start feel a bit overwhelming.

Great concept! The levels were a bit too difficult for my taste, but that's just a minor remark :)

Great job on the style, felt like the difficulty curve peaked very hard after the "tutorial" level having to skip turns and calculate patterns almost immediately. Didn't get quite far but that was just a skill-issue.

What I learned that life of a regular chicken is hella hard

The first levels were great and I thought : what a nice progression.. then on the third or fourth : incredible hard! ... that is such a shame, because I had a good time until I got frustrated by the farmer!

Nice game, really impressive amount of features for a compo game!! The initial instructions felt a bit overwhelming though, I know it's hard to do that on such short notice, but maybe you could show the enemy or tile-specific tips only when needed (or skip some, since a few are pretty self-explanatory). Anyway, that doesn't take away from the fun. Some levels were quite tough: that farmer hatching the egg is gonna haunt my dreams tonight. Overall, great job!

There are an amazing amount of mechanics going on in this game! I think one of the hardest parts of making a puzzle game are the levels, but the difficulty seems to ramp nicely.
Great job and cute art too!

Fun game! Sometimes the farmers got stuck and didn’t move, which made it easier to progress — let’s call that a feature, not a bug, haha
Great game overall, the sounds and visuals are awesome. 10/10 chickens!

Great game, really cool the number of levels you have and the variety in them! The instructions confused me a bit so I skipped them and I didn't have any problems at all. The levels were very fun to solve, though level 10 was a bit too hard for me with the super range dog. The mechanics of the game fall in place so nicely as well: the fact that you can hide behind or even trap dogs behind wall, the ability to dodge foxes and other 2 speed enemies if you move a certain way, these were all very cool. One thing that was frustrating was that I kept accidentally pressing R instead of C, but that's totally my fault. Overall awesome game!

I'm really bad at this games, so I wish the difficulty curve was a little slower. Otherwise - cute game, well done

Those farmers are pretty hard to get away from, even making noise does not always help

Solid entry.

It's a pretty funny game. The sounds of jumping and collecting eggs are atmospheric, and the graphics are also good. The tutorial screens are a bit too much information. The first two levels were fun and exciting, but unfortunately, I got stuck on the third level.

Alright, level 10 got me. The fox picking up the eggs makes it so much harder. Not in a bad way, but man some of the eggs around the foxes are brutal. I'm not sure what the day night cycle is for. Is it just obscuring your vision? At first I thought there would be a layer of stealth involved, like maybe some tasks could only be done at night, or some enemies would sleep, but I don't think that's the case. Anyway, cool game!
