You no take OIL! by mremmele

[raw]
made by mremmele for Ludum Dare 58 (JAM)

Instructions and Dev Notes included :)

Many robots were put on oil rations a long time ago. No one knew why, though – maybe the King of Robots got a little too full of himself. That’s when the robo-subordinates absolutely lost it and decided to mess around with the King.

They're coming. They're thirsty.

You have only one tool – your control panel. Help the King protect the barrel from greedy robots!

Fail... and next time, you’ll be walking home on foot.

Instructions

Destroy the invading robots to earn score and collect coins. Use WASD to move. After each level, use the upgrade menu to buy and enhance your weapons. You can Pause the game on Space/Esc. Try to survive for 10 minutes — eventually, the robots will run out of gas anyway.

Tips:

There are 35 levels and about 40 upgrades. Choose your strategy wisely. Elemental upgrades don’t close the menu.

Dev Notes

Mobile version included! You can play on your phone too.

We had a team of two people: me (Mikhail) and my wife Tatiana. We used my own game engine, Dacha and the editor for this game engine.

We used Pixquare to draw on iPad with a pencil. Overall, the game was built on Javascript + WebGL, with the help of PixiJS and my own code.

You need to work on the difficulty curve. By the end, I could just stand in the center while my weapon dealt with the enemies for me.

However, I have to say this is probably the best game I've seen here so far! I really enjoyed the gameplay of chasing down those little thieves. On top of that, it has a pleasant visual style and fantastic music!

Cool game! Would love to see more usage of gold. I didnt have any money issues, game balance was good at the beginning, later on I could just stand in the middle. The aura upgrade was disappointing as it only collects the oil that is stolen. The aura would need to be bigger, so I didnt invest into it more.

Nice job making a fun survivors-like game! I really liked the variety in weapons but it feels like the player out scales the enemy very fast. You get so many levels while the enemies don't get that much stronger so it is pretty trivial to win once you get the ball rolling.

However, moving all the enemies felt very satisfying and I had a lot of fun with the game. Nice job!

Woooo this was fun! I made it all the way through. Would definitely love to see more upgrades/balance/etc as the other reviewers have mentioned , but as a jam entry this ruled. I haven't played an auto-shooter / tower defense combo before. I enjoyed it a lot!

I really enjoyed playing this, sadly I lost with 10 seconds to spare. One thing I would recommend is making the collector aura fainter and less flashy, it becomes a bit of an eyesore and makes it hard to see when it's filling a lot of the screen.
