Night of the Acorn Hunt by StaticRose

[raw]
made by StaticRose for Ludum Dare 58 (COMPO)

Note: For some reason the game does a long freeze shortly after you start playing. Please just wait for a moment. After that it runs fine. (Must be some issue with the web export.) There is a Download for Windows below – haven't really tested that one though.

Post Mortem

It was quite an intense weekend and I'm fairly happy with how everything turned out. I a lot of time redrawing the graphics. You proably can't tell because they're still kinda meh. But trust me, what I had before was much worse. You can still see the floor tiles which I originally had on the menu screen. But you can't really recognize that there are supposed to be leaves on the floor and so I redrew it with the lighter version that is now in the level. It also took about 6 attempts to get a tree that was somewhat ok looking. I don't really have that much practice with these things.

The sounds of the crows and the falling nuts were recorded on saturday in the local park. I am really happy with how the cawing adds to the ambience of the game and it was time well spent to find a crow that would let me record it. I also have some recordings of rustling leaves and subtle rain but didn't have time do do anything with it. I would have liked to have the weather change as the game progresses.

Here is an image of the nut that produced the impact sound. The crow was too far away for a picture unfortunately. DB745BB3-94A8-4615-A344-F4D16BE080DA.png

The magic effect was a last minute addition. Originally I wanted just add a way to sprint with a stamina bar (which is why it is bound to the shift key) that you could replenish by eating nuts. However I thought it was too confusing to have a separate key for consuming the nut. I also didn't like the look of a stamina bar in the UI. At the same time I wanted to give the players some way of defending against the crows. The squirrel already had the hat, so I decided to combine all of these features into the "aura" that lights up around the hat while magic is active. The brighter it is, the more 'stamina' the player currently has and the faster they move. I feel like this worked out quite nicely. Do let me know what you think!

Of course I also had many more ideas that didn't make it in time. - Obstacles in the game world, like branches. - A way to dash and ram into the crows to throw them out of the playing field - More advanced movement for the player, like some acceleration and a bit of sliding. - Perhaps the ability to pick up multiple nuts at once. - Instead of the crows just appearing, they were supposed to arrive flying. - Generally, I think there should be more trees. But I wasn't sure how that would work out because they obstruct a lot of area behind them form view. Perhaps some sort of parralax. - Maybe a timed mode where you have to collect enough nuts before a timer runs out.

Let me know if you have any more ideas or feedback!

How to play:

Collect nuts and bring them to the pile at the foot of your tree. The more nuts you collect, the stronger the magic symbol becomes. Charge it completely to win.

Beware of thieving crows!

Move with WASD. Press SHIFT while holding a nut to eat it and activate magic.

I liked the fact that crows only started moving when an acorn spawned. I found myself spotting new acorns that way - so it was quite clever addition!

Fun little game!

My satanic squirrel is now pleased with their unholy tree of nuts! Kudos. :)

Moody game. Looking forward to halloween are we? But it's still a nice little collecting game.
Is there any way to fail? Or is it always just a matter of collecting more nuts?

A very fun little game with clear objectives and simple yet engaging gameplay. Unfortunately, it’s a bit short — once you collect enough pinecones, it’s over. The visuals are great, the character is super cute, and I’m looking forward to seeing more content!

@olddog Thanks for the feedback! Glad you liked it. I think there could be a lot added mechanics wise, like more movement types or ways to interact with the crows. Not really sure how to make it longer. Maybe an infinite mode? Or a round based system with upgrades you can buy (with nuts)?

@cogcomp Thanks! Yes, looking forward to halloween indeed. Currently there is no loose condition. I was considering maybe having something like a timer that runs out. Or a way for the crows to attack an hurt the player. Would appreciate any suggestions!

@nash I wish I had had time to add a bit of an idle animation to the crows, but I do like that they also help in this way!
@ajile3105 It's supposed to summon itself protection for the winter. I wanted to add some sort of dome effect that surrounds the tree the more nuts you had. I originally thought that the pentagram lines could become impassible to the crows when charged but thought that would make the game too easy.

A simple and enjoyable game. I would have liked some way to push away or hit the birds, but it's a good game.

@baluj Thanks! I would have liked a way to hit them by dashing. Very sensible suggestion. For now only the 'magic' made it in. You can use that to deterr them for a bit.

There’s definitely room to grow in terms of visuals and gameplay, but it plays quite arcadey — I like it. Overall, well done!

it's fun! audio is nice. sometimes it felt like a bit of a losing battle getting enough acorns, but felt good when I finally collected enough!

Not too bad! I had trouble fending off the crows, for a while it seemed easier just to feed them than to try to do anything else, though that's probably because I didn't get how the magic worked (I remembered "press shift" but it didn't do anything whenever I tried, apparently I wasn't holding an acorn). Some on-screen "press shift to activate magic" when holding an acorn and a crow was nearby would have been really helpful to deal with my poor reading comprehension . Sound and music were nice!

Great mood, but could use more depth in gameplay. Something like, crow repelling totems, throwing things in crows, etc.

Mwa ha ha ha ha! I gathered the acorns to summon Beelzebub!

Perfect for the Ludum Dare Theme and perfect for just this time of year!

Great game! I love the art and I love the mechanic. Also like that Godot was used. I need to start using that engine more. =)

Truly cursed. In a beautiful way, the game has strong aura. The music really ties it all together. Really cool :v:

Really cute!! Any game with squirrels and crows gets an A+ in my book. I really like the animation for filling up the magic symbol.

I like the graphics a lot, the individual sprites are very detailed and nice looking (especially the crow.) I think you might find it could pay off to focus on stylistic cohesion of graphics, like making sure everything has the same color scheme, style of outline, etc. which could really help tie the game together visually a bit more.

It's awesome that you recorded real-life objects outside for the sound effects. Recording random things to make sound effects is honestly one of my favorite parts of the Ludum Dare experience, lol.
