Drive a truck! Collect trash! Collect .... other things? Mysteries abound!

MainMenu.png

Controls

  • Movement - WASD
  • Collection arms - E/Q
    • Pull up next to trash and press key
    • E for right arm available from the start
    • Q for left arm is a purchasable upgrade at the depot
  • Pause - Esc

Known Issues

  • The depot is unmarked -- it's in the big parking lot behind where you spawn, through the gate, just drive back there and in to the middle of the lot.
  • Street sweeper ticks up trash even if you don't drive anywhere
  • The secret objective takes kind of a long time to finish, but it does end!
  • There seems to be a crash that only shows up after playing for a while, which I couldn't repro in the debugger :-(

Having trouble using the collection arms (Q/E doesn't do anything, I can only drive, and run people over), I'll come back to this one before rating.

I must say I love the 2D aesthetic, with the harsh rising 3D buildings, I might steal that art style one day

not super sure what is considered trash, and I definitely hit someone within the first 10 seconds but it was fun

It was great finding out that the people dying was a feature and not something to be avoided. Really cool idea and interesting premise!

Very nice art style! I kinda felt that driving and car in itself feels not as, I don't know, solid? And also camera was waaaaay too nauseating, had to stop playing after a bit. But other than that, damn it was fun and very old-school GTA-ish game!

I loved how my truck slowly turned into an eldrich monster. 😁 Driving and collecting feels good, but crashes lack impact. If the crashes were properly implemented, the game would be even more enjoyable.

The controls and goals are easy to understand, but the depot was a little bit difficult to find, I stumbled upon it randomly.

Sadly, I didn't complete the game because it froze 🥲 but it was fun while it lasted.

I have a bug in my corner. Is the environment assets or was everything created independently?

It's a cool idea, but it's easy to get lost and can't find my way back. Also, when I leveled up, the game became buggy and wouldn't let me collect trash or people

Took a while to realise that the grabber only worked near trash, and couldnt find my way back to the debot when i was full.
As soon as i heard the willhelm scream i couldnt stop running people over.
The style is great!

I crashed the game, but at least it was while doing some evil stuff. Liked the concept, I think the controls need a little bit rework, max speed is waaaay high

That artstyle is so damn nice! Total GTA 2 vibes! Gameplay-wise it's great apart from a bug where blood and trash visually gets collected but the meters don't increase

This game is a lot of fun! At the beginning, I was collecting trash and started to wonder what the goal is. Then I accidentally ran over someone and the reveal was good.
However, the first time I got lost and had to restart the game. A minimap with an arrow would have been nice.
I found the interface to buy stuff really hard to use, because it doesn't clearly show what I have, what I can buy and what is equipped.
On my second try, the game hung up when I killed someone with the maw and I needed to restart, but not a big deal.

All in all, it is a very good submission!

Love the twist! Was quite amusing. It's janky but has a lot of charm :D Sadly the game froze while I was exploring the city :(

Overall I enjoyed it quite a bit :D good job!

@khamekaze oh, I see we didn't communicate that bit properly. blood and trash go in the same bucket and the bucket only holds so much. I think we should have laid the bars on top of each other so you'd see the blood fill from the other side and hit the trash and then stop.

@semenchk what was the bug you ran into?

most environment art was created by @wles and most character art and collectible art was created by @ajores. all of it was created in house!

@nnnnneeeedddd thanks, the art was heavily inspired by the original GTA game! you do need to be close enough to something for the trash arm to swing out and grab something. I wanted to create some kind of indicator but ran out of time. the collection areas are about half the size of the truck and directly to the left and right of the truck, you can only collect something when it's in that area and you have a tool to collect it. so you would need the left arm before you can collect from the left side.

@ArianaRaine psssst, you should try collecting a person ;). it gets easier after you hit them!

@preef @thierry @harleylikesmusic @skeler @woona yeah, we wanted to make an indicator to get you back home but ran out of time. we're thinking of adding those last bits of polish and posting it as a directors cut not to be rated on like we did in the last jam.

Wow, making a GTA2-like for a jam is quite an acomplishment! It took me a little time to get it and an indicator or a map toget back to the depot would have been nice. On my second day it just froze when I was trying to pick up a person, unfortunately!

Awesome work in only 2 days! In geral is a fun game, just wish there was an indicator to go back to the depot cause I have no sense of direction :P

Got lost and confused trying to figure out how the arms work,
Ran over some guys out of curiosity.
Found out how arms work immediately after...

It was all uphill from there, as I'm sure you can imagine.

Unfortunately, game crashed spontaneously when I ate a guy (he was already dead) while trying to appease the blood god. Guess that one was poisoned. Might try again after this comment.

Anyway, more tangible critiques:

-Car is just a bit harder to control. Although, if this jam has taught me one thing it's that cars are hard.

-Arms are a bit tricky to figure out, given their selective range.

-It's really easy to get lost with the lack of notable landmarks. I think a marker to lead you back to the depot
after you've filled up on human viscera would've been quite helpful.

-Music was a bit repetitive

+Loved the spritework

+Loved the... alternative playstyles?

The Wilhelm scream will never not be funny lol this was a fun spin on old school GTA imo! The collecting blood twist was really funny too XD

I played the HTML version and couldn't get the "appendages", I'm not sure if it just didn't make it in or what, but I still had a great time.

One thing I would've changed is waiting to reveal the blood meter until after you collect someone or run them over, I just feel like it would've been more impactful finding that mechanic out that way.

Wonderful entry! Very colorful and creative :)
