Video Store Blitz by triggthediscovery
Collect the hottest films in this simulation of the experience of film collecting circa 2005. Check fake Wikipedia to plan your next move in this game that I definitely needed more time on.
So, this game comes in two parts, the main game (inside of videostoreblitz.zip) and the companion (inside companion.zip).

The main game is an arcade style game where you have to slowly build your collection and try to hit score goals. the trick is that you'll get scored for things like getting all the films in a given year, and collecting the complete filmography of various cast and crew. To make a plan for the film you want to pick up, you can use the companion.

On the other hand, the companion is a fake online encyclopedia which has a ton of metadata. You can look for good combos and goo films to pick up. You can check filmographies, awards, and check how many entries are in various series using it.

On a meta level, this really could have used another couple hours in the oven. That said, I felt it was finished enough to justify including in the compo. The concept of a game split into 2 was kinda too cool not to do, but it was definitely a stretch for a 48 hour jam, lol.
Apologies for not including: * Back and forward buttons in the companion * A list of your film collection * Links to won awards on the actor pages in the companion * Audio of any type * Toasts indicating great finds/repeats on the scoring screen * Rarities (everything is equally random) * Next year/Previous year in the companion * Countless other things
I hope you enjoy, or at least are engaged by my nonsense.

I think I wish I had, like, 8 minutes rather than 1, and maybe a place to 'slot in' my final collection. That way, maybe I could 'trade up' for a better collection. E.g.: "Oh, I have the trilogy here, but if I remove swap out the last Movie, I'll could get the complete Melissa Lee videography, which is worth more!"
And maybe alternate ways to organize films - like, end-stops with 'Award-winning films of 2003' and 'The best of Alex Haris' or w/e, so that way you are not just searching off of genre.
I also wonder if it would be possible to make this work with 'real' film - you'd have to scrape wikipedia (easier than it sounds) and then write some parsers to look for good collections to meet your critera
That way - folks could use actual movie resources (like wiki but also letterboxd or imdb) and be rewarded for having real film knowledge. (but non-film-buff players would still be able to complete collections just with good observational skills and googling)
Haha sorry - I'm only rambling because I really enjoyed the idea and think there are some cool places to go with it. It hits on a type of 'collectathon' fun that I've never seen a game do before - where the hunt for 'info' is as important as the hunt for the items themselves.
Yeah! Fantastic work
@noobman64 Ah, the no shelves issue is definitely a bug, should have included a failsafe for that condition. I'm a big RLM fan, so there's probably some subconscious inspiration there lol.
