Petals by AppoxGames

made by AppoxGames for Ludum Dare 58 (COMPO)

The highlighted shape shows where you can plant your next flowers. When a flower fully blooms, it helps nearby flowers grow faster.

Break stones by chaining your flowers together — bigger stones will need stronger, longer chains!

Growing flowers and breaking stones gives you points, and the chain combo is a multiplier.

Have fun and enjoy watching your garden come to life

A beautiful game! A bit complicated for beginning, but great afterwards when you know how it works :) Thanks for an entry :)

Great sound design and I like the overall graphical style as well. Probably gonna stick with the Zen mode! ^-^

Took a minute for my tired brain to grasp it, but once I did it was really nice to get into the zone and chain some flowers together. Zen mode is also very appreciated. Nice work!

Fantastic sound design, the soundtrack sets a relaxed, bittersweet mood and the sound effects for the flowers are spot on. I found the gameplay itself confusing but it was a nice experience nonetheless. Well done!

The graphics are beautiful and the sound effects and music really complement the game well! I'm curious how it picks the pattern to place petals in, it seemed to always give me exactly what I needed haha. I enjoy playing it in the relaxing zen mode. I tried in the normal mode, but quickly lost and didn't see an easy restart button in the game (I just refreshed the tab and it was fine).

The Zen mode is definitely the way to go. If you were to add some kind of "timer" for this, I think it could be tied to placing flowers.

Really solid sound design, and animations for blooming flowers are very satisfying.

Really satisfying game, the chain effect of the blooming flowers was great. Agree with some of the above that zen mode is the way to go, felt less like a strategy game and more like an idle cozy vibe. Well done though!

I have to admit I never completely got what was happening. Still relaxing and pleasant to play all the same thanks to the really great mood, especially audio and animations.

Is it me or do I have to refresh the whole page in order to retry ?

Great idea and a polished game. It’s very enjoyable to play, especially in zen mode. The tactical element falls a bit short for me, it’s easier to just click everywhere until the right pattern matches. That could probably be improved by adding extra objectives or something else. But even as it is, I really liked the game, it’s relaxing and pleasant.

Very interesting concept. Took me a while to realize, that I can't place flowers if the pattern overlaps an already grown plant, because the red indicator is not very visible. But then I got the hang of it and had a great time.

The best tactic is to spam click the empty regions though I think. Feels great, also because of the awesome sound effects, but it's a bit cheesy. Here's my highscore:

Really impressive meditative game. The aesthetics of the music and animations are great. The mechanics are interesting and are a bit tetris-like in terms of squeezing in pieces. I only got a score of 434 as I was mostly looking for spots where any shape could go down. Still, great entry!

Cool concept and some fantastic art and sound design. Really enjoyed the Zen mode the most.

Love the atmospheric soundtrack and screen effects when a flower is made or a stone is broken. Visually I like the style but it was hard to see when a pattern matches so my monkey brain got in the habit of just clicking rather than checking is shape fit in hole. + for hexagons

Cool! The sfx and music gives the game a nice atmosphere. I like the design of the flowers and rocks as well.

The music is really nice and relaxing, it sets a nice mood. I really love that you put zen mode in too.
The art style, effects and animation of the flowers is great. Also maybe it's just me put I found the best thing to do was just spam click everywhere and just see the flowers pop up everywhere without thinking much about it haha.

I enjoyed this. There's more strategy to the game than some people suggest - it needs a bit of spam clicking, but I did best by cultivating an area with lots of 5-petaled flowers to get a very long chain, spending as long as possible at lower levels to place pieces carefully without setting off the big chain. I got a score of 1069 by this method, although that took quite a few attempts.

Something that took me a while to understand: When a flower fully blooms, it doesn't boost all surrounding flowers, only those in the pattern most recently used by the player.

@tesseract That is a impressive score! My highest is 758.

I wanted it to be more strategic but due lack of time i had to cut short some important mechanics and just rush in a timer mechanic to make it challenging. I'll most likely update the game with a version that is closer to what i wanted after the jam is over.

This is a nice laid-back experience. The sound is amazing, although I got a jumpscare the first time a rock broke :D I didn't find it particularly engaging for long play, maybe it could use a little bit more variety in the color palette - although it is atmospheric. Good job.

Fun game, at first I was confused because I didn't realize you had to grow the flowers by having the shapes over already planted spots, I thought there was going to be some kind of growth that happens as I spread out the seeds around the rocks or something. Once I got into it was a nice game, zen mode was nice, less stressful. Nice job!

Fun and laid back, but definitely wish there was an easy restart button! Had fun, but definitely felt like I was missing something critical about the gameplay.

Innovative gameplay and wonderful sound effects. Love the idea of flower getting petals. The only problem might be that the red indicator is rarely visible when overlaps with a grown flower.

Super Zen experience. It took me a run to get a hang of that the tiles came in different constellations (user error :stuck_out_tongue:) but when I figured that out this is such a nice time!

The Art design and sounds are on point and the feeling when you kick off a combo hits you right in the dopamine!

Super submission! 5/5!

An interesting game, though it took me a while to figure out what to do. A reset button would help (otherwise, it seems I have to reload the page to restart the game). I love the music in this game, and the concept is very unusual. Building chains and smashing rocks with flowers is satisfying.

It's a simple game that I've spent more time on than I'm willing to admit. The only bad thing is that I can't move the camera the way I want. Very nice game!

Beautiful game, love the screen effects as you grow the flowers and chains. I also prefer the zen mode. Only nitpick would be to have the shape of the next placement be more visible, since you have to move the mouse off the flowers to see what the shape is (the red over the pink flower is not visible). Otherwise great work!

Very cozy game, the UX was done fantastically but I will admit my monkey brain found the actual mechanics a bit hard too fully grasp, I mostly just ended up playing zen mode so I could just click wherever and make a big flower garden ^_^'
