Trading Postage by Istaera

[raw]
made by Istaera for Ludum Dare 58 (JAM)

You've just picked up a new hobby: stamp collecting. And like all stamp collectors, you want your stamps to be arranged carefully in your albums. Rearrange your stamps on the page and visit shops and swap-meets to trade stamp pages, until you can join the Elite Stamp-collectors Cabal.

examplebooks.png

Each stamp has: - a colour - a picture - a postage value (the number in the top left-hand corner) - a quality (poor, common, pristine).

Click on a stamp to pick it up, and click where you want it to be to put it down and pick up another stamp. You can improve your stamp pages by: - using better quality stamps - matching stamp colour in a row or column - making sequences of numbers in a row or column (e.g. 2,4,6) - arranging the pictures in various ways (e.g. kangaroo and emu want to face each other, birds want to be on top of trees). Play the game to discover the combinations.

Once you have a well-arranged stamp page, trade it for another page of similar worth. Hopefully the page you trade for will have better quality stamps in a worse arrangement, so you can re-arrange for an even more worthy page. There are various locations that you can trade in; click one of the buttons on the right to visit a location, for a small travel fee. Each time you enter a location, the inventory of that place will be refreshed.

The game is pretty cool if you like puzzles and logistics. I wish I could set the music volume instead of just turning it on or off as it was a bit loud. Overall, nice game!

Very fun concept! A bit complex to immediately grasp but once I understood the basics the rest came together fairly easily. I really like the way the music builds up as you put together better stamp books, and the concept itself of arranging a collection of stamps was a very creative take on the theme!

The adjacency bonus makes this game quite fun to think about how to maximize the output of my stamp book. The aesthetics are quite charming and makes for a pleasant experience. Great work!

This is very well polished for a game jam, I'm impressed. I had to stop before I got too hooked and spent way too much time, since I know this is the sort of game I could sit and play for hours. Well done.

An interesting game that is really addictive.

At first it was a bit unclear how to play, but then when I realized, the game became really interesting.

Loved it, i know i could play this for a couple of hours just to get that damn laurel, i made a full book of 9 pristine kangaroos, i'll content myself with that for now. Great take, simple yet clever and really addictive.

This game is super addictive and surprisingly deep for a game jam game. There are so many different ways you can optimize your stamp book! Game design wise this is absolute gold. I will probably be returning to this game later because I found the gameplay super fun and appealing!

Amazing work, very brainy game. I love the relaxed twist of clmbing up a ladder according to the value of your books.

This is incredible. This game has true potential and I'll launch it again later to beat my score.
I love the idea, it's a good balance between puzzle and scoring.
I forgot some rules about color matching, rows, prices but with some more tutorialization this game would be perfect!

Oh my! I spent quite some time with this one. The mechanics are amazingly thought through for a jam game. I didn't make it all the way, had to stop at 842 points, when I had to admit I reached my limit  Also liked how the music intensified with each step.

What I wasn't a fan of: The mechanics were maybe a bit too complicated, and at times I felt a little lost, especially at the beginning, but obviously that didn't stop me from figuring it out (mostly). By the end, when I was just clicking around, I (re-)discovered the tray and the fact that I can upgrade it - I never used it, just stored the stamps in my books.

Also I feel like drag and drop would suit this more, but that's a tiny little thing.

Overall, had lots of fun!

Wow, this game is incredible. Simple mechanic of picking up and placing stamps elevated to a full experience. I could play it for a long time. Incredible work!

Holy shit, I would say this game could actually make it big if polished some more with more complex art. I really liked the game design and had lots of fun optimizing my choices. I loved the music and the whole mood of the game. Great submission!!

@dendi-life what is your OS? I have had games built in the same way not work on Windows 7, so it could be something like that.

Thanks @dendi-life, do other Love games work for you, such as https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/58/$420743 ? It could be that my particular build process does something wrong, or needs updating.

Why is this game fun? This shouldn't be fun. Let me just knock out one more game rating before bed he says, it'll be quick he says... Oh, it's 1:30 in the morning now, what happened? Seriously though, great puzzles, super well put together. I wish I knew the game was going to end though, I could have perfected my grand master book.

This was the most fun game i played yet this jam. You perfected what many me included often struggle with: A fun, rewarding and self sustained game loop.

That said you also really deserve the five star rating for theme - as the collector aspect is integrated into setting AND mechanics.

I think i played this for up to 20 minutes and didn't get totally annoyed by the music which is also always a plus. The choice of having something "classicy" als further fits the setting and mood.

Also i think this could make for a great board game if you want to go in that direction. I can easily see my boardgame friends enjoying it and there are so many options for stamps and even more mechanics in a game for multiple players (stealing stamps, auctioning etc). If you ever try in that direction leave a post here!
