Lonely Train by Zeit
Lonely Train
Game Concept:
We think the theme of “delivery” should focus on the process of delivering something. We want to create a small game and make it as attractive as possible through delivery. Initially, we came up with the idea of the Snake Game, but we wanted to make it contain more delivery elements. Therefore, the train is a perfect element transformed from the snake game. We decided to create a game combining a Snake Game and a train delivery Game. The Snake Game is a collecting stage, while the second part is the delivering stage.
Level Description:
- Level 1: The train gets packages and items prepared for different delivery.
- When the time is over you can click the left mouse button, then use WASD to continue moving.
- Level 2: The train gets through challenges and delivers packages to different places to win the game.
- The bottom left corner indicates the number of blocks remaining to reach the village where goods can be delivered.
- Each move will consume a food. If you run out of foods, the game is end.
Operation:
Level 1: WASD for moving the snake. Level 2: Click “Arrow” to move forward and Click the mouse to trigger events.
Patch Note:
- v 0.1.1 (05/01/2023)

The art direction by Xindong Zeng is visually appealing, and the character and environment designs by Hongxing Qian complement the game's overall theme. The audio elements designed by Yibing Chen help to create an immersive experience.
One aspect that could be improved is the feedback system for successful deliveries and random events. Currently, there isn't much in terms of sound effects or animations to signal the completion of a delivery or the occurrence of a random event. Enhancing this aspect would make the game even more enjoyable and satisfying for the players.
Overall, Snake Express is an enjoyable and inventive game, with a captivating twist on the classic Snake Game. The game offers a delightful and challenging experience that will keep players engaged for hours on end. With a few improvements, such as the addition of audio and visual feedback, Snake Express could become a fan-favorite for gamers who love delivery-based adventures.
Reminds me of 'Oregon Trail' - always like having to make those tough choices, juggling resources - and never quite knowing what is coming up next.
The art here is phenomenal, and so much unique work too - you must be an incredibly swift and proficient artist!
Very ambitious for a jam game! Well done!
I really enjoyed the sprite art of the train and the plateaus floating by.
The first textbox in the second part came and went so quickly that I sadly could'nt read it.
The second part - where you have to go through the seven deliveries - feels a bit tedious and long, as it repeats the same assets in a (random ?) succession.
The Music does create an effectively dreadful mood, though the the volume of the loud parts could maybe be turned down just a notch (if the music is on full power for too long, it becomes a bit exhausting).
That said, once I got the hang of it and what the game wanted me to do, it became a quite almost meditative experience.
Nice work, if a little drown out, but nice work nonetheless!
Didn't reach the end yet (despite trying multiple times) but will come back to it :)
1. Get rid of bipolar filtering - it blures pixels in fullscreen mode.
2. It would be cool if your hp lowers when you out of food, not an instadeath.
Besides that - excelent submission. Artstyle especially. Is this OST original? If that is the case i suggest you add it in credits here)
A few tips:
* I agree with @dexort, the pixelart doesn't look too good, because it is a bit blurry
* I love the artwork of the isometric part, and the snake-part on their own, but I don't think they really match together. It would've fit more together when the rpg-part was more simplistic, or the snake looked more like the train of the isometric part. And of course I prefer the last option, because i love the isometric artstyle
I had a lot of fun playing this game! I thought it was brilliant to combine these two styles of games, and my only suggestion would be to perhaps make the snake game visually similar to the main game, for example having the snake take on the appearance and colors of the train. But overall, I really enjoyed the gameplay and the art is very good with beautiful colors but I was sad to see the artwork blurred for some reason T-T
Congratulations on the great work and the amazing result you were able to achieve with this game! (´。• ᵕ •。`) ♡
Completed the game on my second try! I thought it was very creative to integrate the snake game like that.
However, I think the main portion of the game was much more interesting. I really like those balancing resources kind of games. Maybe it would be better if it didn't depend on your performance in the snake game, and instead always started you out with the same set of resources. The first time, I didn't do so well in the snake game, and I also ran into worse enemies (the train guy 2 times). The second time, I got tons of resources in the snake game, and I think the enemies I ran into were also easier (didn't see the train guy at all). It might also be more interesting if you alternated between snake game and the main delivery game, since right now as it stands, if you did poorly in the snake game, might as well just restart the game.
About the blurry pixel art: it's likely the blurriness is caused by upscaling the image. If the image exported by your artist is clear, but it's blurry in the game, you need to make sure that the texture is using "Point filtering" or "nearest neighbor". In Unity, this can be found in the texture import settings:

Anyway, it was fun, and the art was cute! Great job and congratulations on finishing the jam :)
