Welcome to Tryst of Mars!

Welcome to my Ludum Dare 53 entry: Tryst of Mars, a "walking simulator" type game that can be beaten in about 5 minutes. In this, you play as a courier between astronauts that have settled Mars. They find it quaint to write letters and give gifts to each other and, well, you so happen to be there to deliver it for them.

Thoughts

I focused quite a bit on artwork this jam, as opposed to gameplay. The scripting is very minimal (and was almost entirely done in the last hour... ha!). I'm trying to nail down the flow of assets from Nomad to Procreate to Blender (if necessary) to Unity. The results are nice, but the process could be improved significantly.

Known Issues

  • Slopes aren't as easy to get up as I'd like. Tried to balance friction to avoid the character sliding, but it hurt the ability to climb slopes and stairs. As a workaround, try jumping first and then W to move forward, repeat as necessary.
  • Possible to slide through dialogue and miss it. Should have added a confirm!
  • Idle animation rolls the arm bone. Something to do with the IK/FK switch.
  • The arrow will point you to Verdez directly, but in doing so players risk missing the bridge.
  • Getting out of the river is a bit awkward, and the water behaves as a solid.

The controls are clunky but i guess it's the objective, still it doesn't fit perfectly with the beautiful world you build (where i excepted more low gravity than anything other).

Other than that the game and mood are beautiful, congrats!

I love the graphics and the environment. Sadly the player controller is pretty clunky, other than that well done!

Excellent work! Really the strong point was in the artistic part, I found the modeling and textures incredible, in addition to the atmosphere achieved, the only detail I would add is that the faces of the characters will have more expressions xD. The movement of the character does not feel very good, but once it is polished it will be a very interesting game, congratulations!

Holy moly well done with both the look and the music! I missed some of the dialog because I sometimes slightly touched the goal circle without clearly moving inside it but other than that it was a lovely experience.

The graphics are absolutely incredible well done on that! The movement was a bit frustrating in places like when you wanted to speak to an NPC or those stairs at the start but it did go with the low-gravity aspect so I didn't mind it too much. Nice work!

The graphics were great, and the music fit well! If you had more time a few more sound effects would have gone a long way, and binding the turning to the mouse might have been a little nicer for controls but that's just personal preference! Nice work!

Liked the graphics! I didn't do so well on the controls. Music was nice too. I wished the dialogue were repeatable as I missed them a lot. Nice overall.

Cute graphics! When I jump, the character head changes are very interesting, but I can't control the characters very well.

Nice game! I think the controls could have been improved if the velocity was reset when changing direction forward/backwards?

The visual part is really nice, and I see a lot of really well done things, but I find it a bit sad that the main part (walking) feels a bit clunky. Another thing that I found frustrating is that I missed most of the dialogue by entering and exiting the zones quickly (since walking is a bit complicated). I know those are known issues, I'm just sad it keeps me from enjoying the visuals. Anyways, I hope it was an interesting process, and well done for all that work done in so little time !
