Boxtopia Drifter by Joe Stack

[raw]
made by Joe Stack for Ludum Dare 53 (JAM)

Drive a drifty-slidy car around the park to pick up and deliver stray boxes to the recycling bin where they belong. Earn points and spend the points on upgrades to make your car faster, and carry multiple boxes at once. Be careful though, drive too recklessly and the boxes can become detached!

(This is my first time creating a game and I don't know why menus don't display properly in WebGL, please play in fullscreen for the best experience)

This game was pretty enjoyable overall, at the start of the game it is really challenging to get any of the boxes into the thing without them breaking, which I love a good challenge! I don't know if I just didn't get far enough into the game but I saw a lack in humor which is obvious alright it doesn't put down the game in any way. I loved the mechanics of the car being hard to steer. Overall this game is very enjoyable.

I enjoyed playing this one! Liked the challenge of zooming across the map and blasting boxes into the recycling bin. I also liked how you would lose the boxes if you turned to hard! Great game!

Cute! I really enjoyed that I could fling the boxes around, that was unexpected. Was the most interesting gameplay feature. Fun idea to have cars recycling boxes in the park. The controls you have listed don't seem correct for keyboard – it was WASD instead of arrows and I'm still not sure what the boost buttons etc were. Drift didn't seem to do anything either? Things are bit boring and hard at first, then after you get a few tether strength upgrades it's too easy.

If you feel like working more on this, I think there's a lot you can do to make it more interesting:
• Your time limit is a real bummer, it's so short there is no incentive to go very far away. I'd just triple it at least so there's more time to have fun.
• I really wanted to be able to dramatically fling boxes from afar into the bin, but it seems they get marked damaged once they bust off my tether. Missed opportunity?
• I think different RNG rules could help to add some more variety to the replays and to create a sense of progression. I could see you Frog Fractions-ing this to just get totally random and crazy.

Nice work! Really really good for a first jam game ever.

I really liked the aspect of upgrading between runs. I love a game that forces you to start weak and grow much better with each run. Maybe your handling is a little too out of control at the start, though.. Great work!!

The time limit is too short. Removing the time limit and turning it into a game where you collect boxes and upgrade your character seems like a good idea.
