Fuscus and The Garlic Kin by Buumiii
Hello There! We paired up again for our second gamejam and created a small frog platformer game in godot, with sweat and garlicbread. Try it out and let us know what you think! :smiling_imp:
FUN FACT:
The Garlic Toad (Pelobates Fuscus Fuscus) exists! When alarmed, it emits a very loud call and it can exude a noxious secretion which smells like garlic, hence its common name.
Story:
You play as a frog named fuscus. He lives in the Great Posavina Valley where the Garlic Kin exists since beginning of frogkind.

With his little friend Pelobati he enjoys the little things of life, like doing froggy things and adoring garlic. As one of the Kins themself it's in their believe to always be righteous. ..and so their journey begins....
Controls:
The only way to inflict damage is by throwing Pelobati. Hitting enemies or obstacles will hurt Pelobati!
Pelobati Tipps
When you are holding Pelobati, you can shoot him with left click. You can see the trajectory of how Pelobati will fly. You need to pick him up again to be able to shoot him.

If you are not holding Pelobati, you can use left click to get him back with your tongue.

Love the npc talk sound btw :)
I'm not sure I understand how to use pelobati and the tongue doesn't seem to do damage?
I also managed to go out of bound in the first screen by triple jumping instead of going to the npc!
The single biggest feedback point I have is that the *gameplay loop is a bit pointless*. You put all this work into Pelobati, but he's hardly useful. I didn't manage to kill a single enemy by throwing him, and it's very easy to just walk around the enemies.
You have such a good start (and a nice gameplay gimick!), but I hope Pelobati becomes more useful in the future.
And then, the smaller feedback items, IF you were to expand the game further:
- Better affordance on things that damage the player (especially spikes)
- An end-title screen (ending was a bit abrupt, and I'm still only 90% sure I ever reached the end)
Maybe move the "Pelobati Throwing" Explanation a bit up on the itch.io page. I didn't read it at first (which is my bad of course, but if it doesn't catch your eye immediately, you know...)
Few small nitpicks:
- please don't make me jump down where I don't see where I will land (or land at all and not fall forever  ) Also don't put spikes there, when I can't even see them. :)
- After getting the recipe I was able to walk left and jump over the wall and landed outside the level.
- The spikes were not visible very well. Maybe another color would help.
Good job with the game!
I really like the tongue animation and think it has potential to be used as a multi use mechanic, such as eating stuff and then using their effect when throwing. Was fun :)
do you know that if you go right on the second screen you can fall into the abyss?
The gameplay isn't too complicated which I think is a good thing for an LD entry. So for me, pretty cool game guys! Good job.
I find the bounce back whenever you get hit a bit annoying as it made me bounce on spike which made me bounce on an ennemy which made bounce again on spikes and killed me multiple time... I also found the spikes hard to see, as you go so fast and they kinda blend in the background.
I also love that I learned garlic frogs exist!
Other than that, platforming was really quite easy in the short time I had to mess around with it -- the triple jump got rid of vertical challenge, and horizontal challenge could usually be conquered about the same way. I *loved* the art and animation, the desaturated Gameboy esc palette really works wonders here!
Just one more thing: after receiving your delivery, it puts you into the new level, with a easily passable wall on the left side. Yeah, I broke it the moment I had a chance to, that's just how I am.

The graphics are cute and the sounds are pleasing. I didn't quite understand what function throwing my baby frog filled however- I suspect it wasn't completely implemented.
I was stuck at the very beginning for a bit because I didn't realise I could jump in the air! Might be worth bringing attention to.
Great work, especially for your second jam, and best of luck on the next one! 🐸
The game is gorgeous, though, and I liked the jumping and throwing, though I found it far easier to go around enemies rather than fight them. Related to that, it didn't seem like there was any invulnerability frames, which made it punishing to get trapped by the mice critters.
Still, it was a fun experience! Great job!
I missed music a lot. Seriously think about it for an upcoming game.
Congratulations.
The Names come from the latin name of the Frog Pelobates Fuscus Fuscus and the other ones are made up :)
Unfortunately we had some things we could not devote much time to due to time pressure but we are thinking of doing a post ludum Dare version where all this little issues will be fixed :)
I really enjoy the color tone and the art style of the game.
One little issue I had was enemies and spikes blended into the environment with no contrast and so I kept running into them. I also ran past the enemies because they don't die in one or two hits.
I really enjoyed it though. Speedrunning it and going for the collectibles was a lot of fun! Throwing up at flies, jumping around and diving off ledges was great fun! The audio generally fit the game well too! I love the colour palette as well. I feel like you could take the art and the idea and run with it for a full game!
Also I just start to speed run and avoid enemies, it's more easy to achieve
Movement and jump feels very nice for platformer, especially for 3 days work. Graphics nice, frogs are fun) Sounds of from fun x2)
All in all, though, not bad! It just needs a little refinement to really get the best out of it.
