Fuscus and The Garlic Kin by Buumiii

[raw]
made by Buumiii for Ludum Dare 53 (JAM)

Hello There! We paired up again for our second gamejam and created a small frog platformer game in godot, with sweat and garlicbread. Try it out and let us know what you think! :smiling_imp:

FUN FACT:

The Garlic Toad (Pelobates Fuscus Fuscus) exists! When alarmed, it emits a very loud call and it can exude a noxious secretion which smells like garlic, hence its common name.

Story:

You play as a frog named fuscus. He lives in the Great Posavina Valley where the Garlic Kin exists since beginning of frogkind.

FUscus LD 53 Intropng.png

With his little friend Pelobati he enjoys the little things of life, like doing froggy things and adoring garlic. As one of the Kins themself it's in their believe to always be righteous. ..and so their journey begins....

Controls:

The only way to inflict damage is by throwing Pelobati. Hitting enemies or obstacles will hurt Pelobati!

Pelobati Tipps

When you are holding Pelobati, you can shoot him with left click. You can see the trajectory of how Pelobati will fly. You need to pick him up again to be able to shoot him. aim description.png

If you are not holding Pelobati, you can use left click to get him back with your tongue. tongue screenshot.png

hey, i like the idea it's pretty cool!

Love the npc talk sound btw :)

I'm not sure I understand how to use pelobati and the tongue doesn't seem to do damage?

I also managed to go out of bound in the first screen by triple jumping instead of going to the npc!

Very cute and neat game. Lovely aesthetic overall and the game-play is satisfying though I can see a lot of places where you can expand it, which is nice if you decide to do a little post-ludum version too~ Great Work!

Nice game! For a jam game, certain aspects are *very polished*. Some of the sounds are really well done, the main menu is nice, and the art style is appealing.

The single biggest feedback point I have is that the *gameplay loop is a bit pointless*. You put all this work into Pelobati, but he's hardly useful. I didn't manage to kill a single enemy by throwing him, and it's very easy to just walk around the enemies.

You have such a good start (and a nice gameplay gimick!), but I hope Pelobati becomes more useful in the future.

And then, the smaller feedback items, IF you were to expand the game further:
- Better affordance on things that damage the player (especially spikes)
- An end-title screen (ending was a bit abrupt, and I'm still only 90% sure I ever reached the end)

Such a cute game. I really really loved this and the art style. As another commenter mentioned, it definitely does give off cosy game vibes from the aesthetic and the chill nature of the game. Cosy games are my favourite genre! The sounds were great. The game was really polished and the combat/throw mechanic was really interesting, I enjoyed that a lot.

Super cute little platformer! Very appealing color palette (awesome graphics, I love it) and smooth movement mechanics. Congrats, you did a great job ❤️

Maybe move the "Pelobati Throwing" Explanation a bit up on the itch.io page. I didn't read it at first (which is my bad of course, but if it doesn't catch your eye immediately, you know...)

A really cute game i always love to see frogs in games! It felt really cozy and a sort of calming feeling when playing it. I think it's a combination between the cute art and the soothing color palette that just hits the right notes for me to absolutely love it. I do think some more direction would be nice though as i managed to jump out of the map on my first run on the left side of the map which soft locked me so i had to restart the game. Otherwise absolutely amazing and infinitely cute! <3

Hi! Like simplicity of style! Agree with @ceruleanblood, NPC sounds great (but at first time I was little scared)!

I dunno, I don't get this game. The looks are nice, especially the bouncy mousies, the lil frog throwing feels just awful and doesn't seem to be needed for anything in the game. The description saus he damages enemies but I never managed to kill anyone with him, and retrieving the lil guy while you are getting pummeled by enemies is no fun. Also the trajectory doesn't really follow the mouse, which makes aiming very hard.

This is very cute and cozy. Though I was a bit confused at first with how to play, I didn't realize you can wall jump and shoot enemies at first, I just avoided them. Loved the palette and dialogue sounds!

The game is awesome, and I really love the graphics. It was fun to play, although challenging to defeat the enemies because they move pretty fast compared to the player once you're in their range. Overall, a great job!

Cool platformer! Awesome graphics! Was fun! :)

Few small nitpicks:
- please don't make me jump down where I don't see where I will land (or land at all and not fall forever  ) Also don't put spikes there, when I can't even see them. :)
- After getting the recipe I was able to walk left and jump over the wall and landed outside the level.
- The spikes were not visible very well. Maybe another color would help.

Good job with the game!

@stefan-funke Thanks for the feedback! I always struggle with designing levels, so I will definitely keep in mind what the player see when they jump! Agree on the spikes, I still walk into them now after developing the game lol

Always happy to check out games with frogs - your game is lovely! The throwing mechanic did seem a bit obsolete though, which is a shame cause it's so cute.

Fun game! I didn't really get when I should be using the frog throwing mechanic but it was fun to throw him at stuff. The spikes on the ground were a bit hard to notice! Messed me up many times

Fun stuff. I agree with other comments it's good to see where you're jumping down to before you jump. The triple jump helps with that though (jump before you hit the ground to give yourself some time). Good job overall though!

@ani gotta love frogs right  Thanks for playing the game! The plan was to include levers in the level that the player can only reach by throwing the smoll froggy. But well, time got tight!

Visuals and audio are nice tho would like to hear some background music. Gameplay is fine but Pelobati feels kind of useless. Probably I am the one doing something wrong but I have even managed to kill one creature with him and it didn't feel rewarding. Just running and dodging enemies till the end seems like more valid strategy. Still enjoyed being a forg and helping brother tod making garlic bread. Wish you a good jam

This is awesome! The art style and palette are really well done and consistent. I wonder if removing the "sliding" of the frog on the ground (like making him stick wherever you land) would make it feel more satisfying to control and lend itself better to looking/feeling like a frog jumping. Regardless, fantastic submission!

Cute artstyle and mechanic, though I don't think I used it much. It also took a while for me to realise I could triple jump.

I really like the tongue animation and think it has potential to be used as a multi use mechanic, such as eating stuff and then using their effect when throwing. Was fun :)

great art and an interesting mechanic, although it's a bit hard to control (at least with a touchpad)

do you know that if you go right on the second screen you can fall into the abyss?

I like your artstyle, but it seemed like pelobati doesn't reset his health once the player dies. I don't know if that is on purpose, but still very enjoyable game.

The art is absolutely adorable. I love the game mechanics especially the tripple jump is so much fun! I think this is actually the first game ever I've played with a tripple jump. You guys are revolutionary haha.

The gameplay isn't too complicated which I think is a good thing for an LD entry. So for me, pretty cool game guys! Good job.

@kultuk Thanks for the feedback! I agree it is not suitable for the trackpad, we did not have that in mind during development. Haha yeah I noticed that some walls can be jumped over using the trippe jump! Will probably fix this for a small post ludum release

Very cute art, found the contrast a little bit too low. It was a little bit hard to easily see obstacles like spikes. I did not really figure out how to use the pelobati and I found some of the double jumps a bit unforgiving. But overall really nice.

Cute little game, LOVED the voices. Sometimes after I died I spawned in the second level at the start without ever finishing the first (collecting the delivery) and some sort of "You won" would have been nice, but otherwise very polished game and art. Would love to see more

I'm always imagining putting frogs in games, but I never have. This game is a perfect manifestation of that fantasy! The art and voice sounds are so so good. I agree with the comments on contrast, and I think a swampy sounding song would be a nice addition for the post-LD patch. Overall, great work!!!

So nice graphics! Liked throwing the frog companion, although it didn't seem to do alot? The quest and the dialogue with the other frog were nice! If you fail the game, it felt as if the restart/quit buttons were unresponsive or froze the game, since nothing seemed to happen when clicking on them. Overall, good work and a decent idea for a jam!

I love the adorable little oof sound, and the art style was great! Unfortunately, I felt alot of the time I got hit by various threats was because I couldn't see them against the background at speed. Good work overall!

I really like the art and vibe! It feels really polished.
I find the bounce back whenever you get hit a bit annoying as it made me bounce on spike which made me bounce on an ennemy which made bounce again on spikes and killed me multiple time... I also found the spikes hard to see, as you go so fast and they kinda blend in the background.

I also love that I learned garlic frogs exist!

Hey I like this idea! It was a bit simple for my liking, I have to say -- but it looked and played fantastic ()! Combat was in my opinion, annoying, unfortunately; it's *much much* easier to just avoid enemies all together than risk hurting Pelobati, and usually get hit anyway while aiming. Not saying it was a bad idea to have enemies, but a little more work on it would improve what you've got, I think ()! Spikes were a bit hidden, I lost a few runs just to being oblivious to my surroundings, maybe increase the color contrast on them. :3

Other than that, platforming was really quite easy in the short time I had to mess around with it -- the triple jump got rid of vertical challenge, and horizontal challenge could usually be conquered about the same way. I *loved* the art and animation, the desaturated Gameboy esc palette really works wonders here!

Just one more thing: after receiving your delivery, it puts you into the new level, with a easily passable wall on the left side. Yeah, I broke it the moment I had a chance to, that's just how I am.

A game about frogs making garlic bread is one you know I have to play 🐸

The graphics are cute and the sounds are pleasing. I didn't quite understand what function throwing my baby frog filled however- I suspect it wasn't completely implemented.
I was stuck at the very beginning for a bit because I didn't realise I could jump in the air! Might be worth bringing attention to.

Great work, especially for your second jam, and best of luck on the next one! 🐸

Not sure if it was because I was playing on linux through wine, but when I got to the door, it just transitioned, but nothing happened.

The game is gorgeous, though, and I liked the jumping and throwing, though I found it far easier to go around enemies rather than fight them. Related to that, it didn't seem like there was any invulnerability frames, which made it punishing to get trapped by the mice critters.

Still, it was a fun experience! Great job!

Beautiful color palette. I think I managed to finish, because I got to a frog and nothing else happened.
I missed music a lot. Seriously think about it for an upcoming game.

Hilarious game! I love the game and its original idea, I didn't know the Garlic Toad existed and the charisma of Fuscus and Pelobati is admirable. I also love the analog color palette that gives it an awesome mood. And best of all, I've had a great time playing it. I hope there is a second part!

I really like this. The art is so good and the frog voice is perfect! Jumping is fun and I just want to explore! That cost me a couple frogs being lost to the void when I climbed up and jumped off to left of the start on the delivery level! :joy:

One little issue I had was enemies and spikes blended into the environment with no contrast and so I kept running into them. I also ran past the enemies because they don't die in one or two hits.

I really enjoyed it though. Speedrunning it and going for the collectibles was a lot of fun! Throwing up at flies, jumping around and diving off ledges was great fun! The audio generally fit the game well too! I love the colour palette as well. I feel like you could take the art and the idea and run with it for a full game!

This game feels good. I don't get the idea of LMB and i thought it my super power to kill enemies, but no. Why? You give such a nice possibility to kill enemies but don't use it full potential (for example, it will be nice to just throw it and kill enemy, then you need to return back you LMB ability)

Also I just start to speed run and avoid enemies, it's more easy to achieve

Movement and jump feels very nice for platformer, especially for 3 days work. Graphics nice, frogs are fun) Sounds of from fun x2)

Really nice little platformer with a cute mechanic. Loved the graphics and general vibe of the whole game and the difficulty was just right for me! Only issue I found was that sometimes it was difficult to see the spikes, or enemies as they blended a bit into the background, but other than that nickpicking, it was great fun!

This is a fun little platformer, with a clever gimmick and great graphics. Unfortunately, the black-and-white graphics make it too hard to spot the enemies, which makes the game a lot more difficult than it should be. Another word of advice for platformers is that the camera should move to show more of what's ahead of you than what's behind you. This game does the opposite, which makes it even harder to see obstacles coming.

All in all, though, not bad! It just needs a little refinement to really get the best out of it.
