Burned Reputation by TheGameOverGuy

Ludum Dare 53 Submission:

BURNED REPUTATION

How to play:

Fight monsters, burn cards, deliver resources, and gain reputation!

Fight for your reputation by delivering requests made by villagers with resource cards you gain while venturing out in the wilderness.

How to hunt: fight.png

  • Click the hunting button on the main screen to start your hunt!

  • While hunting you will encounter either monsters or boon cards.

  • Monsters have a weakness, health, a reward, and a fee for running away.

  • Draw cards from your deck to attempt to face the challenge in front of you. If you have the resource needed for the encounter, click and drag that resource on top of the monster to attack it. If you failed to draw the correct card from your deck into your hand, you will have to start burning cards. If you burn enough cards to fulfill the run requirement, an option for running will become available. Use this to escape from an encounter that you can't win!

  • Boon cards are specific resource cards that you can take with you and add to your hand. While great to find while out in the wilderness, your deck size limit (hand + deck) can never exceed 15 cards. This means you will be forced to burn as many cards as needed to meet the deck limit. However, you can freely choose which cards to burn from your current hand.

How to assist villagers: village.png

  • Villagers have specific resource requests that are needed to fulfill a delivery request. You will notice that villagers don't give rewards for completion, but instead give you reputation points (the star icon in your inventory). Get 10 of these and you win! However, running from a villager will burn your reputation... which if it gets to 0, you will be banned from the village forever.

How to win:

Get 10 reputation points by fulfilling requests made by villagers!

How to lose:

Either run away from villagers requests enough to tarnish your reputation forever OR run out of cards in the wilderness.

As a fellow rain enjoyer, i liked the ambiance of the game, art style looks good ! I think the game lacks some other gameplay mechanics than exchanging resources! It feels a bit short, i want moar !!

Very nice game! I seemed to have gotten stuck with the corpse card. It didn't let me interact with it. Good work nonetheless. Keep it up!

@bakostyren, thanks for that info. There probably is a bug with the card data interactions I have either not found or forgot to fix lol. Thanks for playing!

Nice game! Always love a card game submission. I was able to beat it- it looks like you have an issue with your Thanks for Playing screen where it is offset to the side and cut off- playing on the web build.

I thought the game was fun- I think it could be improved by having more of a functional difference between hunting and tending to the village. I'm using wood to repair bridges as well as hunt trees- maybe some cards are for hunting, some are for village stuff? Either way, thanks for putting this together- well done!

Clean UI and interesting resource management game, has the potential to be expanded on. Good job!

@aeoncl , I agree that there needs to be a bit more gameplay wise. I ran into a bunch of unity issues on day 2 and lost a lot of progress. So, the two gameplay loops ended up being very similar in the long run lol.

Nice game, i really got sucked into it haha! I will say that I think there aren't enough sources of income for the resources, you always trade 1:1 and lose a couple to be able to, so you almost always lose resources when fighting. Other than that I really enjoyed the game and played it for quite a while.

@bakostyren , thanks for the info on the offset issue. I was rushing to get that finished at around 8pm before the jam ended lol. I agree that there needs to be a better difference between the two. I had a bunch of ideas that ended up getting scrapped because I ran into a bunch of unity issues on day 2. I will definitely try remaking / expanding upon it in the future. Thanks for playing :)

@larryv, thanks for playing! I agree about the resource management needing some tweaking. It definitely was difficult to manage the card management portion of the game and balancing the resources in just a weekend. I will have to play test it a lot more to see how to expand upon it in the future.

Wow wasn't expecting a card game with this theme! It's really tough to manage your resources tho, i think just buffing the rewards would be an easy fix. Even as a person who doesn't perticularly like card games, this one got me restarting quite a few times!

@trassh , thanks so much for playing! I agree that there needs to be a balance in the game resource wise. I initially had an idea that resource cards had different values and that ended up being difficult to fully implement in just the jam time limit. I think if I add that you should be able to reshuffle somehow which opens up a bunch of other re-balancing issues. Thanks for your feedback :)

I like the idea, and there's some really good pixel art and variety in the challenge cards, it just needs more polish and maybe the ability to see the contents (but not the ordering) of your deck, just to make the decision to burn/run more strategic

@karkadan Thanks for playing! You can actually see the contents of you Deck + Hand on the left side of the screen.

The first number is the amount in your deck of that type and the second number in the parentheses is the number of that type in your hand.

Didn't really expect a card game with this theme, but you pulled it off nicely ;P Rain is a nice touch. Took me a couple of tries to really figure out what was going on, but once I got it I had a fun time. Keep up the good work! See you next jam :)

@mrs-wheelsx, thank you for playing! A card game wasn't what I had in mind when I initially heard the theme, but came to some idea after a good brainstorming session. It definitely could use some friendlier ui (maybe a tutorial level) for sure to make it obvious what is going on. There is always time to clean things up after the jam. Especially the code base lol ;).
