The world looks great and the penguin animation is so adorable! Enjoy the soundtrack but wish it didn't start over each time I restart.

Simple and good, having to move the penguin and the ice does create an interesting mechanics symbiosis. Really polished feel to what is there! Would have loved to see something more, power-ups, more fellas on the cliffs throwing different stuff into the water, perhaps a bear throwing fish etc. A good jam game though, jolly good work! :penguin:

Not sure if I did something wrong, sometimes I died while there was not even a single obstacle on the screen.

@diadem-games I also initially had this issue until I looked at the controls again and realized I needed to be controlling both the penguin and the ice blocks independently. The penguin slowly slides backwards and you have to adjust to avoid slipping off.

@svenerik Thank you for your recommendation, and thank you play our game. At the beginning,we have indeed considered some horizontal elements. But due to our limited experience, we spent a lot of time learning about the Unity engine features that we had never encountered before. In the future, we also plan to improve our first game.We are a young team from China, and I hope my fluent English can fully express my meaning (other members of our team have good English proficiency, but unfortunately it's not me). Finally, I would like to thank you again for your evaluation and wish you a wonderful day

@svenerik Before participating in this event, we were working hard on another game. I think we will start improving our penguin immediately after that game is completed.

Very cute artstyle, I like it ^_^

My penguin lived forever on his last three cubes))
My only suggestion is to add some score points or difficulty increase/levels.

10 sliding penguins / 10

@rusya-ink Yes, we originally wanted to create different levels of difficulty and display the player's distance traveled. But time is still too limited. (ノ ̄▽ ̄)

The pinguin is so cute!

The game itself was fun, I liked the music and artstyle fit the mood very nicely, but I think some score indicator would go a long way here!

I think I got so far that the left part of the iceberg disappeared.

Brilliant design with the penguin and its ice journey! The penguin is incredibly cute, and I love its crown.
You might consider adding some beginner's guidance to remind players that the penguin can slide off the ice! (I learned this from the comments )

Welcome to play our game and please leave a review. (*╹▽╹*)
By the way, we're also a team from China. You can search for "ludum dare" on Weibo, and then find "Caged". Message me there. We'd love to see your next game!❤

Really like the art and the music ! My penguin sometimes died randomly even when I was making sure it didn't slide off :( Other than that it was fun! I think it would be cool if there were things for the penguin to collect (Like fish or something !) to make you take more risks.

I enjoyed the theme and the music. Having two sets of controls was challenging. I also seemed to die in open space with the penguin in the middle. For a young team you have done a great job

@mspecterIn the initial design, there would be floating cubes that allowed the raft to grow stronger. Alternatively, there may be companion penguins on the raft, and we have also envisioned strong sunlight causing the cubes exposed to it to quickly melt, while the little penguins need to stay in the shadow of the iceberg to protect their raft. We even envisioned octopus and boss battles that would block the player's screen with ink after a collision. Unfortunately, due to a lack of experience, we do not have the time to complete the production of these contents.

A very interesting gameplay design that is simple yet fits the theme perfectly. I only realized that the ice is slippery after drowning my little penguin a few times XD! A very enjoyable game, love the 8-bit elements in the music.

@aio I know what you mean. We ourselves have not been able to implement everything that we had originally planned. That's why we decided that we would finish the game after the game jam. I hope it works out for you too

Loved the art style and music! Not sure if there was an in-game goal, besides keeping the penguin alive as long as possible. As others have suggested, a score based on distance or time would be nice. Also think that increasing the difficulty over time by e.g. speeding things up or adding more obstacles would be interesting.

Thank you for your previous love for the Little Penguin! After overcoming various challenges such as our laziness during China's National Day holiday, the team members' wives' cravings for travel, and a certain team member's wedding (congratulations to him), we have now uploaded a brand-new version. This update not only maintains the original features but also introduces a lot of interesting new content. We invite you to come and experience it.

Pros:
* Appropriate level of difficulty, yet a simple premise; made repeat tries very addicting.
* Your game easily has the nicest art style that I've seen so far; everything looked super clean!

Cons:
* I was initially lost on what I was supposed to do, and died quite a few times at the start; this was because I had missed the initial instruction to use the arrow keys for the iceberg. I feel having a dual-arrow key system is unintuitive, though; maybe WASD could control the iceberg, while clicking on a mini-iceberg jumps the penguin to it? At the very least, I think the game would benefit from either a control banner or some integrated instructions during the first playthrough.

Bugs:
* Penguin very slowly slides off the iceberg in the opposite direction it's moving from; this often led to many random and unanticipated deaths; because of how slowly the player moved, it wasn't something I was looking out for.
* Sharks aren't restricted from spawning right on top of the iceberg, which can lead to instant deaths. Ideally, there should be a small spawn-blocking radius around the player.

This was overall a lot of fun! High score games have always been great timewasters, with this one being no different.

Wow, took some time to get my head around the controls, which isn't a bad thing because it added a sense of good challenge to the game. Had a good balance of difficulty, which I like, really nice little timewaster which is great for LDjam games! Loved the art style and overall polish, took a few tries to get into the groove but once there it was extremely fun! Great work ^_^

Very cute!!

I really like the style, especially the penguin's design! very charming!

The use of the theme is pretty simple but effective

The gameplay loop is fun and the controls are easy to understand, I think the fact that the penguin slides off the ice slowly is cool, it adds enough depth to where it doesn't feel mindless.

My biggest problem is the shark spawn. I have died 2 times simply because the shark was directly under me. other than that it's good!

I can see this game being addictive if the gameplay would be expanded upon some more! good job!

What a beautiful and fun game, great job. With sound it would be even better, I believe you could add a post jam version with the sounds, because I know there wasn't time, right? I would like a way for the ice platform to be able to return little by little, perhaps by collecting something, it would increase the game time, because total destruction is almost inevitable after a while. It's really beautiful, the other two I played about very similar penguins were side-scrolling, but yours is vertical. All 3 are a lot of fun, great examples of good implementation of the theme in the jam. Just by playing games like yours we learn about how to make games for a jam. That's the amazing thing about jams like ludum dare where we are encouraged to play each other's games. Many jams just send and that's it, not here, if you don't play other people's games and evaluate and if possible comment, you could be in trouble lol.

Very fun and cute game, the graphic part is ++
At first, I did not notice that the penguin was slowly sliding on the ice, and each death was incomprehensible to me.
If I haven't read other comment I could have stopped playing, thinking about a bug. But when I've understood I've really enjoyed the game. I finished far away with only one ice block left 😄
Well done, keep it up👍

Additional note: the penguin's sliding appears to be constant and only backwards. It might be interesting to add sliding proportional to the movement of the ice. You would have to compensate if you move the ice quickly...

@lincolnsalles I suspect you might have played the WebGL version where the audio is muted by default. We do have sounds and music. You can either change the settings on the web or download the macOS or Windows version. I believe you'll enjoy our music.

@nescre Thanks for your valuable feedback. Actually, the penguin's sliding isn't a bug but a feature. We hope players focus on controlling both WASD and Arrow keys at the same time.

We are considering new animations showing the penguin close to falling off the iceberg and coyote time providing more reaction time, thus preventing some unforeseen deaths.

@patbgames Yeah! We initially designed a sliding proportion (about 0.8-0.9) for the penguin relative to the ice movement. However, we recognized that this could make the game too challenging for beginners. As a result, the penguin's backward-only sliding was a compromise.
