Plate of War by someoneman

[raw]
made by someoneman for Ludum Dare 54 (COMPO)

The interdimensional Queen Buggo has launched an attack on Earth! Luckily, you have the Plate of War, an ancient dining plate that became cursed after it was used to serve and dine on the flesh of a powerful warrior king.

The Plate of War automatically loads itself up with weapons that automatically attack its master's enemies. Any weapon that falls off the plate merges with the holder, improving their attributes.

  • Features:
    • 5 types of weapons
    • 1 type of enemy + a boss
    • 6 minutes of gameplay
    • Good source of dopamine
    • Customize the player character's color

Patch: I checked the rules and saw that it allows bugfixes, so I fixed the boss not having enough HP.

Nice, been wanting to make a game like this myself for a while now. This is a solid entry in the genre, the movement speed compared to the enemies feels just right, and the variety of weapons is impressive for a jam game. I found it a bit difficult to understand where my weapons were going to attack, and when, but overall, great work!

Glad to see vampire survivors-like. Took me a while to understand that every level game me either a stat or another weapon, but I never figured out how I could control whether something landed on the plate or not. Moving my character seemed to affect how it fell a LITTLE, but not enough that I ever felt in control of it and that was frustrating. Also, it said to left click on items to discard them and that didn't seem to work? Although one time it rearranged the sword on the plate. I was glad to see different weapon types, and I liked the way the enemies ramped up in health as time went on. Nicely done!

Nice game, big fan of vampire survivors and then plate mechanic was neat, though it took me a while to figure out how to move the items, I was trying to click and drag, to limited effectiveness.

The plate mechanic was interesting, though I think it could be expanded a bit more. Perhaps you could have the functions of the weapons be different depending on how you orient each one. The movement of weapons onto the plate was also quite floaty, I'm unsure if this is intentional but sometimes it was frustrating to get weapons where I wanted them. That said, there was a surprisingly large variety of weapons and the graphical style is quite funny. Good work overall!

That was quite a power trip, I liked the unique mechanic of balancing on the plate but it did take a while to figure out. The sword also felt a bit inconsistent and I have no idea which areas its gonna hit yet. Overall fun game!

Addicting! I like the little noise the bugs make when they die. It would be nice if the larger "boss" bug had a health readout or something. I couldn't tell while fighting it if I was dealing large amounts of damage or if I needed to try another strategy.

A simple but addictive game. The graphics are unusual but not annoying. Fighting enemies is interesting because of the variety of weapons. If you continue to work on the game, I would recommend adding more types of enemies.

This little guy is so funny! The mechanic to choose the player's colour is simple, but it's nice to see the tinting. The sound effect of the little guy was pretty funny as well 😅
It was a bit hard to control, with the movements feeling a bit slow, but I think you can easily fine-tune that.
The lore behind it was pretty cool, making the mechanic interesting, however it was a bit hard to get the items on the plate.
I admit that this is not my usual kind of game, but that I loved the silly cute art and sound effects, so it makes up in that! I'd be interested in seeing how you would expand the game. You already have different weapons and enemies, so maybe expanding on the story/lore would fit the genre.
The potential to add more is on the table, so keep up the good work!

I think it has potential. I like the direction of the art style(maybe change the lighting?), the plate mechanic is cool, but not super obvious at first. I would make the whole thing faster cause it moves kind of slow at first. Nice job! I know my feedback is very critical, but I hope it's constructive as well.
