Black&White! by Vladimik

[raw]
made by Vladimik for Ludum Dare 54 (JAM)

In this game you play as square walking in endless, randomly generated halls, and sometimes being chased by black square, which trying to kill you for some reason. You will have 2 items: med kit and cola bottle. This is my first game, so... rate it as you like!

Why squares? - Because i didn't have enough time to make actual models...

CONTROLS: 1. To pick up items just walk right into them; 2. To use items press Enter; 3. To discard items press Q; 4. To use buttons press Enter, to choose buttons press Up and Down Arrows

Change Log: 1. Changed the art style of enemy and player, they're now more detailed and fit the art style of the level; 2. Changed gravity a little bit, so now it feels better; 3. Now you can walk on item, and don't get stuck, probably

For a first game this really isn't bad. I figured out you use the items with ENTER and then you need to discard them with Q, otherwise you can't pick up new items. I like that idea.

A nice and simple jump and run is a good start for your first Ludum Dare! I didn't quite grasp what the items actually did and whether the different levels were actually designed or whether it was randomly generated, but I had my fun trying to avoid the black square and the spikes!

It would've been nice if the character art and the level art were more consitent, the level could've taken a minimal style just like the squares to make it look more cohesive. Otherwise, it was a simple fun, albeit rage-inducing, speedrunning game - the level segmentation made for nice pacing.

The character feels a little floaty, it could be nice to increase gravity to make it feel a bit tighter. I wasn't a big fan of needing to drop an item before picking up a new one, it felt like more of a hassle than anything else, but I get the idea. The dash was cool and I had fun with the game for a few minutes, good job!
