Warehouse Keeper by tanis

[raw]
made by tanis for Ludum Dare 54 (COMPO)

https://youtu.be/n5I5GuqYZvc

You are the warehouse keeper. Space is limited and you have to make sure you put all the boxes in the right places.

Bindings

  • WASD / Gamepad left stick to move around and push the boxes.
  • P pauses the game
  • R restarts the level

Notes

I wanted to make something simple as this is the first time I work on a game using Unreal Engine 5. I am quite new to the engine and I knew upfront I would spend quite some time trying to figure out even the basics.

So I went for a sokoban like game. I wanted to squeeze in some features that are not in the standard sokoban, but it was pretty much impossible due to time (you probably know the feeling).

I tried to polish as much as possible what I already had in place, and that's the result.

Huge thanks to the guys from Hazelight. I uses their Unreal-AngelScript integration to avoid having to recompile the C++ code as that takes quite some time. AngelScript is a scripting language so you don't need to compile anything, it's pretty much instant-reload of your game. It comes with some quirks but it is a life saver for game jams.

I love the music and the sound effects. The visuals is okay, and fits the game idea. The gameplay is a classic box moving puzzle, and this is okay. I would liked a bit more interesting and new game mechanics. Overall a pretty well made jam game.

Fun game! I like how it starts off easy but gets more difficult. Also, good to see a fellow Unreal Engine user!

Fun little puzzler. I really liked the SFX, although maybe do a random roll to decide if the movement sound should be played. it's very frequent :D

Simple idea but really well executed. Felt like the controls lagged a bit, not a big deal, but wanted it to be a little "snappier".
Fun sound effects, and a fun game overall. (I made it to the end)
Great job!

Good job! Very simple game, which is a good idea since you're still learning the engine. Most of the levels are quite simple. Level 11 was the most interesting. Like JK5000 said, some kind of twist would have been great... (exploding boxes after X seconds on the circle? Color Coded circles? boxes that stick together?). Other than that, great job!

@kasperhangard you are right. I should have randomized the sound when you move around... it's really overdone... I knew there was something wrong about it. I should have taken some more time to work on that. Thanks for the tip!

@onsson thanks for the comment. I somehow wanted to make sure the player moved on a grid and the easiest way was just to block any movement until the current one is done. I know it doesn't feel very responsive. I toyed a little bit with the idea of having some kind of command buffer to have the next move in a sort of queue and let it run as soon as the previous is done but I didn't really want to spend too much time on that, considering I was still having plenty of other issues to figure out in UE. But I totally agree with you that some "snappier" controls would have been better.

@ismael-rodriguez thanks for all the suggestions. I agree that deviating from the original game would have really helped.. but again.. learning the engine really took its toll this time. On the other hand I have some more fire power in my arsenal now

Howdy! Simple but effective, I recommend you the video "What Makes a Good Puzzle? by Game Maker's Toolkit" great video for creating interesting puzzles.

Overall pretty good ^^

I beat the game! This was a very standard and solid box-moving puzzler. I do wish that the controls were a bit tighter and faster and I did turn down my volume after a bit since the music got very repetitive. However, that's likely just a side effect of being a jam game. The leaderboard was an interesting touch. Additionally, I do wish that there was some sort of gameplay enhancer to add more resistance or strategy to completing each level. Maybe there could've been objects that teleport boxes around, heavier boxes that can't easily be moved, or something else along those lines. Overall, good job!

pretty good game actually, I was able to beat the whole game, the leaderboard in the main menu being my main incentive XD. Only problem I really have with this is the shove noises are REALLY annoying, good thing you can turn it down but maybe it would be good if the shove sound only happened when actually shoving boxes.

Not the most innovative thing but a fine choice for learning a new engine and it plays well enough. Sound got a laugh out of me

Great stuff, I've played through a few of these box pushing type games, this is a solid one. I like that you kept it somewhat simple! also great job on the audio, it added character to hear the voice when doing actions, and the song was a great fit! My only piece of constructive criticism I didn't see anyone mention yet, I think bringing the camera in might help tighten the overall look. I'm not sure if it was the same art/model, but the title screen looked beautiful, but then in game we were a little more zoomed out than I think it had to be. Just a suggestion though!

At first reading the chosen theme, I said to myself "it could be cool to create a sokoban-like project". I made another - when you created a solid entry with neat mechanics and clever controls. I like your little game which fits with the theme. The aesthetic is polished. I want more levels. Thank you for your comment. I wish you best ++

Nice entry! Small bit of feedback: it would have been nice to be able to hold WASD to move continuously, rather than having to mash the keys.

Great sounds and music, very catchy  Pretty nice graphics too.

Like others mentioned, I would have liked to hold the movement buttons to move continuously.

Other than that, not much to review here, classic Sokoban  Kudos for figuring the engine out on the go.
