Hey y'all! This is my Jam Entry for LDJAM 54: Limited Space!

The Game

Free disk space to install your favorite game in this crazy run and gun. Use your disk space to buy upgrades, and run the routines to free more space. Delete files by wrecking everything apart inside the levels, and fill your combo meter to get bonus multipliers!

Tools

  • This game was solely made by me.
  • This is my first game made with Godot (yay)
  • I used FL Studio for audio.I made all songs and sfx during the jam period.
  • I used Spritemancer for sprite effects.
  • I used this font: https://www.dafont.com/pt/pixel-bit-advanced.font?sort=date&l[]=10&l[]=1 by Francis Fonye.

Use of Limitation

You have limited disk space and can't install your favorite game. Travel through narrow levels and destroy everything in your wake, opening your path.

Very cool game, sometimes the jump felt inconsistent and the top UI covered the path forward but overall felt very good to play

I enjoyed the game a lot! The game did freeze on the end of level 2 but it might be just because of me going off screen while on WebL.
But overall it was really fun and fits the theme perfectly

Great game, especially having done it all by yourself! The concept of freeing up space to install a game into your computer is sooo genius!

This was truly an excellent entry. Hard to believe that a single person can make such a game in a weekend.

Everything was top notch, and on a very polished level. The asset quality of the graphics on their own was serviceable, but that CRT filter really made a differerence (maybe it was too intense?). The platforming was solid, (jumping was a little bit floaty), and there was some thought put into the level design. The shooting was also really satisfying (cool explosion effect) and the music set the mood for the game. Great implementation of the theme and nice small touches with the humor.

Lots of stuff on done here, an excellent job, congrats!

(On a sidenote, does GODOT provide a CRT filter out of the box? also did you use any particle system in GODOT for the explosion animation or was it done manually? Because if you are able to produce so much stuff in 2 days with GODOT, it would make me less hesitant for me to move over from Unity :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: )

crazy polished, especially for a solo dev, amazing job

also happy to see another computer space-type take on the theme

@exofrenon Thanks! Godot doesn't provide a CRT filter out of the box, but you can do a lot with shaders. The explosions were made in another software, Spritemancer, which is really cool for particle effects. I added some variance by randomly rotating the sprite.

The Node/Scene system in Godot is really cool, treating everything as a Scene was weird at first but in the end it makes a lot of sense. The ease to create and use async methods was also something great to note about the engine. It was exceedingly ease to create timers and wait for them, and sync stuff up. Developing the coyote jump and buffered input to the character controller was very easy because of that.

The tilemap system is something a few people complain about, but I actually found it super easy to use. The only thing that I'm still not 100% sure yet is how references are saved/shared. I still need to delve a little bit on that.

I still use Unity a lot, but the process of migrating for the jam was rather smooth. I don't love dynamic languages but GDScript is so well integrated with the editor that it completely makes up for it. On the other hand, I still prefer Unity's ShaderGraph, and I like how Unity handles texture importing. Seriously though, I think what captivated me the most was the sheer speed of the engine. Iterating was SUPER fast - Unity can be fast if you setup some specific settings and stuff, but it doesn't come close to the level of iteration I was able to get with Godot. Exporting to the web was fast and painless, even with Godot 4.1.

I'm seriously considering using Godot for my personal projects, and not only for jams. I'm glad to see the hype train around it, and it is really nice not to put all my eggs in a single basket.

Also, thanks everyone for playing!

@conradoclark Thanks for the thorough reply. I will need to have a look at Godot soon it seems...

Great quality game. Very well polished, really nice gameplay, it feels good to shoot (although the upgraded weapons is not as cool), movement is a bit floaty but not annoying, it looks good (although all those effects were a bit hard on the eyes, especially after playing for a while), it sounds good, it is good! And it was pretty funny :)

I really enjoyed this. Occasionally the platforming was challenging, but the controls were tight, which made the experience enjoyable, instead of just frustrating.

One aspect I liked in particular was 'cleaning' the data by shooting blocks. It was akin to power washing, oddly satisfying. And The fact that this entire game was made by a single person is nothing short of remarkable!

The visuals and audio in your game are perfectly in sync, creating a delightful retro vibe. It felt like a nostalgic flashback to games like Jazz Jack Rabbit, which is high praise . Overall a fantastic entry, well done!
