Burrito by DJTequila

[raw]
made by DJTequila for Ludum Dare 54 (JAM)

Picture the perfect burrito: tender meat, spicy salsa, sour cream, maybe even some guacamole. Now picture the heart-wrenching tragedy that unrolls before your very eyes as your beautiful burrito falls apart. You didn't mean to over-fill it; you just got carried away in pursuit of deliciousness. There's limited space in a tortilla, after all.

In this Resource-Management Puzzle Combat Burrito RPG, gather the necessary ingredients within your flexible floury folds. Every ounce of filling counts.

Objective

Reach the end. The door at the end shows exactly how much of each ingredient you need.

You lose if you run out of any one ingredient, or if your burrito is full to the max with ingredients.

Controls

  • WASD to move
  • Left Click: Spicy Attack, costs 1 Spicy Salsa
  • Right Click: Creamy Attack, costs 1 Sour Cream
  • Space: Meaty Attack, costs 1 Meat

Flavors

Each attack has a flavor, and so does each enemy. There are 3 flavors:

  • Spicy (red)
  • Creamy (white)
  • Meaty (brown)

Note: I was planning on adding guacamole as an ultimate ability; check back for the post-LD version ;) There's a bit of guacamole in your inventory, but there's currently no way to use it or gain more

Flavor Combat Mechanics

Use the correctly-flavored attack on each enemy for a critical hit, worth double damage:

  • Creamy extinguishes Spicy
  • Spicy burns Meaty
  • Meaty overpowers Creamy

If you get hit, you'll lose 2 ingredients of the type that the enemy is strong against (e.g., if you get hit by a Spicy enemy, you'll lose 2 of your Meat because Spicy burns Meaty)

Post LD Update

Mostly minor bug fixes and a bit of balancing

  • Ingredients bar is easier to read
  • Fixed bug where the player loses before the ingredients bar is full
  • Critical hits are now instant kills
  • Adjusted enemy health and drops

Cool concept for a game, and I like the mechanics. It did feel a little clunky to play, and the dash didn't quite go where I was expecting it to, but it definitely has potential. I do wish there was a little more info at the beginning about the rules of the game, as I never realized you could have too much of one ingredient

@rakthalekk You dash in the direction you're already moving (it follows the mouse only if you're standing still). I can see how that's not intuitive, considering all the other attacks are controlled by the mouse. Maybe I should allow the player to lose in the tutorial so they can learn the rules. I appreciate the feedback, thanks for playing!

This game definitely has the strangest and most surprisingly good theme of this Ludum Dare, amazing haha. The mechanics are fun, but the warning that there is too much cream happens much faster compared to the others, there is also a bug where after the first death the sound stops and some animations freeze. Despite these bugs, the game is still fun and has a great idea. Congratulations on your creation and for your burritos hehe.

Very cool concept! The balancing act was harder than it was fun though. I gave it 3 tries and gave up.

I love the concept! It just needs some polish because the character seemed to not move smoothly, but the idea is great!

Fun choice of characters! I found it a little hard to understand at first, so I had to return to the menu quite often. Maybe add a way to skip the tutorial? :)
Cool mechanics tho, I like it. Well done!
