Slither Space by croze

[raw]
made by croze for Ludum Dare 54 (COMPO)

Made in Roblox, so you'll have to sign up to play I think, or get your kid to play and rate it lol. Basically Slither.io but with nBody gravity and a grid of stars to zoom around. WASD controls, W/S to accelerate/decelerate; A/D to take sharp turns

ezgif.com-optimize.gif 8 player server and probably still terribly optimized, I'm new to making fast paced multiplayer games :) Source Studio project loadable through the Roblox Studio platform, if you're struggling to get it loaded, feel free to contact me. Music and sound effects were not made by me, category opted out.

I love that you made this in Roblox! A game that was made in Roblox Studio was definitely not something I was expecting. It is a little challenging collecting the food because I feel like it fades a little quicker than I'd like, and a lot of the snakes tend to die at the stars so it's tough to collect all of it - though this could be because of the AI of the NPC snakes. I do like how the movement feels though, the turning and the acceleration/deceleration are all very smooth. Very clever of you to make this in Roblox, nice job!

wow, this was a great game, cool take on the *.io games like slither as you mentioned, cool you implemented multiplayer in such a short time. Maybe it's easier with roblox? either way it's polished and controls and movement are fluid, nice work

wait, what was the food? i thought i was getting a higher score by just surviving. I noticed the stars and enemies/other players, but not food

This is so cool!! I did indeed have to make a Roblox account + install the app on my computer, but I loved the game!

In fact I think i ended up playing on a server with you for a bit!

@matt-swieboda Thanks! Yeah multiplayer is a lot easier to set up in Roblox Studio than most engines, still had to do some netcode, but overall pretty straightforward. When players (or bots) die, they leave a trail behind that you can pick up for more points, you can see them in Avi's clip :)

@avi Yup that was me! Thanks for playin, I'm glad I got the astronomer stamp of approval lol

I have always wanted to hack on multiplayer games, but was pretty off-put by setting up networking stuff. Hadnt appretiated that Roblox is a platform that makes this easy! Was the game coded up in something specific for Roblox?

I've never made this much effort to play a Ludum Dare game, you know had to customize my new Roblox avatar and all, but it's nice to see games made in different engines

very nice, I enjoyed it for a while, though the server slowed several times and things started disappearing which was interesting because it added a bit of panic to my trek among the stars. Took me a bit to realize it had this tron thing going on where the tails could kill those running around leaving bubbles everywhere.

I love how the snake seems to be impacted by the "gravity" of those little "planets". I was just learning about Bezier Curves and I have a suspicion that you used them here very intuitively. Great work!

Played with friend, pretty fun for some time, but gameplay is too simple and worm is hard to control properly,
Idea is pretty interesting)

First of all, it is fun. Look really fresh for roblox platform. Also multiplayer support is huge advantage. But controls are difficult to use :(

Wasn't expecting to find a Roblox game here! nice work felt pretty good and having multiplayer in a Jam game is always impressive!

The multiplayer element definitely adds a cool layer to the experience. Kudos for pulling it off so seamlessly in a Jam game—that's no small feat! 🚀

This one's really fun! Awesome interpretation of Snake, dealing with velocity and gravity wells adds a lot. I found it pretty tricky to get escape velocity at fist, but I found that turning into the gravity seemed to help.

I know in your Roblox description you mentioned "otherwise controls may feel very unnatural". I thought they felt perfectly natural, it just took a lot more practice than I expected to stop crashing into everything after a successful turn, lol. After a few minutes I suspect the thing that threw me off the most is how gravity seems to change a little near the edges of the map. Despite not embodying the jam theme particularly strongly, though it is still there, you managed to really nail the feel you seemed to be going for. I like it, nice work!
