Delicious Sums by mDuo13

[raw]
made by mDuo13 for Ludum Dare 54 (JAM)

A puzzle game with dim sum. Fit dim sum onto your plate cleverly to score as many points as possible. Why dim sum? Because we were hungry. We had to go eat dim sum "for research".

Built with Godot 4.1.1, which unfortunately means the web version probably won't work for macOS & iOS users. Maybe the macOS native build will work?

All assets other than fonts and the game engine are original and were created during the jam.

The game mechanics took direct inspiration from the board game A Feast for Odin, and of course Tetris.

This is a clever puzzle that seems like it has a decent amount of strategy to it. I enjoyed solving it and got I think 145 on my second attempt, though it generated a special tile on the map edge which probably cost me some points. Great job.

This is the best game I have played in this Jam so far. This is really superb puzzle game, with some very simple but satisfying rules. I loved the way you have the choices of the food, that sweet are smaller, sour foods are bigger but score different, plus that you have to corner certain objects. Loved the theme too of the food and the graphics and music made up an overall very satisfying feeling. I got to get to a score above 100

@bmacintosh Thanks! That 145 is very close to my best while testing the game (146) though I have no doubts a higher score is possible if you get a favorable board. I wish we could've had time to implement some more mechanics we had in mind to make it more strategic, or at least a way to make sure the board randomization is less a factor. Oh well, so it goes!

@hotaloca Thank you so much for the glowing praise! It makes it all worthwhile to hear when people enjoy the game.

Nice work making an interesting puzzler with interesting rules and mechanics :D! The only downside is that now I am also hungry... time to order some dim sum myself! XD.
Great work! (loved the bowl tapping sound effects for actions).

I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but I'm having a hard time figuring out the rules. I had a couple of fun games just trying things out, but I assume to get a score like 146 there's something deeper going on. I really liked the vibe though!

Well done, very cerebral piece of strategy gameplay

@nardandas The "How to play" screen should have you covered! But it also depends on the board randomization... if there are more symbols that are easily accessible near the bonus tiles, it's much easier to score a lot. Otherwise, strategy includes carefully avoiding blocking spaces and knowing when to pass and wait for the right shape.

Got a 110, thought about scores for a bit, then got this bad boy! Enjoyable game, the simplicity leads to surprising depth.

I didn't understand how to place objects correctly, but the main menu looks very tasty :D

It's good that I make games, I would definitely make a bad waiter

btw web version runs on macos in chrome based browsers, if you switch to the newer rendering engine as in https://github.com/godotengine/godot/issues/70691

I like the variety of sprites, very detailed and beautiful! The gameplay is simple to understand (if you read the instructions - I read them after my first playthrough) and surprisingly deep. There is also some luck involved, so my score in my second game was only a little better than my first. (At first I didn't realize you cannot place two savory/sweet items next to each other). And overall I liked the food theme, made me a bit hungry though!

Cool and fun puzzle! Really got stuck with it trying to get perfect score. Great job! Also nice touch with receipt as a final score.

Very fun puzzler! I got around 140 a few times. I could definitely see this being fleshed out, slowly progressing by increasing the size of the plate, the types of symbols and effects, and different shapes.

Cool puzzle game. I feel the optimal solution is very hard to find. Lovely art of dim sums. Overall a nice game!

Maybe this was just more than I was willing to invest in figuring out the rules, game seems very complex.

I wasn't sure how I was being scored, and the instructions page was daunting at first glance.

This was a really good game. Therapeutic in comparison with a lot of the Ludum entries, heh. And it also works well for the theme. Great job! =)

The concept of this is great and I really like the vibes of this! I needed some time to really understand the rules. I oversaw the part about certain items not allow to touch each other and so I kept wondering why I wasn't able to place some of the items.

I'm impressed by the scores posted here, didn't get anywhere close to that. Nice idea though, coming up with your own puzzle game like this is always cool!
