Starfold by errantlime

[raw]
made by errantlime for Ludum Dare 54 (JAM)

Welcome to the Belt!

Captain a mining ship with limited cargo space and stike it rich on the frontier.

For the first time ever I made a (mostly) complete game within the jam. I am extremely happy with how it turned out and was able to polish it for a few hours.

Other than the two charicters and the backgrounds, all the art was made by me. The backgrounds were generated using Deep Fold’s Generator. The music is by DOS-88 and sound effects were made using bfxr.

Love the vibe and I felt the penusbmic influence :)

Gameplay made me think of the flash game Motherload and I got some happy nostalgic thoughts from that. Controlling the ship is a little clunky

Chill and relax. Although it is a bit hard to control the spacecraft, but I literally went to flow mode when I began to calm down and focus on adjusting spacecraft's position. It's like a pure, space-theme version of Stardew valley. I have to say that I really enjoy this game, 5/5. Definitely better than Starfield

Very beautiful pixel art you got there and a lot of effort you have put in there! Also all these mechanics, shop system, dialogs, etc. I like the relax and atmospheric game play. The control for the space ship was a bit hard with the rotation on Q and E. Would have liked to have it as part of WA and WD.

I see a lot of potential here! I really liked the idea of the game, the art is very cool and the music adds to the ambientation perfectly. I only saw two things that may need some work, the first one is the movement, i feel like it is a little bit unintuitive and sometimes you find yourself fighting to make the ship go where you want breaking a little bit the inmersion. The second thing is not that serious, i noticed that when a song ends it takes a while to the other song to start playing, leaving silence in between, maybe adding a background sound will fill that gap and also will function as a rest in between songs. Sorry if my english is bad!

Very solid entry! I love when mechanics are the focus of games, because I do the same lol. I hope you continue working on it, because these types of games flourish when you don't have only 2-3 days to do everything. Only thing I didn't see was a strong connection to the theme. That and tossing all the controls to the player at once like me isn't a very good idea xD. (Edit: Wait, Starfold and Starfield lmao nice I didn't notice that one)

The game looks great but it would use a bit of guidance with ui or other elements, i did not know what to do D:

Really nice game! It might just be me, but I don't think space mining is ever getting old. Add to that progression of upgrading your ship to be able to mine more and faster and I'm hooked for hours.

I liked that you didn't settle on either a fully inertial movement system or arcadey control and instead have a mix of nearly-fully-inertial with dampeners. I'm not exactly certain that the slow braking when dampeners are off is necessary, since it feels pretty good coasting from asteroid to asteroid with dampeners off to save fuel.

One thing I'd add is some way to detect asteroids. I think I've managed to mine everything there was, but it would be nice to have some sort of radar, kinda like you have the waypoint for the station. In the end, I finished the game having a pretty decently-sized cargo bay, and the last few hauls of ore gave me a good amount of money to buy more cargo space quickly.

It's a solid jam entry. It has a lot of potential to be expanded on, and from what I see you already have some nice ideas for updates, so I'll be looking out for those in the future. :)

Between the graphics and music, this game has a really nice vibe! I think the flight controls were pretty intuitive, although it would be cool for the camera to rotate with the ship so the control directions stay lined up. The cutscene in the beginning was also really neat and made asteroid mining feel like it was of great importance. Great work!

I think a lot of my feedback has already been mentioned, but just to second some of the things said already, the vibe of the game is really great. Between the graphics, music, and atmosphere, you really nailed that part of the project. I found it a bit difficult to control the ship and wished it was a bit more responsive, as some other folks have mentioned. Overall though, I found the game very fun and I'm very impressed this was made in such a short time frame!
