RAM Runner: Space Shift by Petr Vejchoda

[raw]
made by Petr Vejchoda for Ludum Dare 54 (JAM)

Updated version: fixed issue with occasional avatar flickering, fixed completion trigger, removed space input for UI elements (was causing unexpected behavior)

In a digital world where memory is the most precious resource, embark on a unique journey with "RAM Runner: Space Shift". As you navigate from point A to B, the challenge isn't just about your path, but also managing the space on your RAM. Turn on the right tiles to pave your way, but be wary! Use too much memory, and you'll find yourself stuck as the game can't load the next segment. It's a delicate balance of strategy and swift decision-making. Do you have what it takes to ensure your journey remains uninterrupted in this intriguing blend of puzzle and platforming?Welcome.png

A really cool idea ! I was a bit confused, but after a couple of tries I got the hang of it.

This was a funny idea lol. Although I'll admit the camera movement gave me a bit of motion sickness. But overall it was a good idea

I love the idea, but think the tank controls makes it a bit hard to play

From the moment i possessed the character the screen started flickering and I couldn't move. The walking animation still played though. Judging from the story it must be my fault I guess :D Really interesting concept!

Experienced an actaul visual bug, everything flashing and a super imposed view, game stopped loading, ram bar fluctuated alot, printscreen didnt capture it tho lol.

Very interesting! I found it really funny when the game pulled the rug on me and told me that the graphics are a feature! Love that idea. The overall controls and camera could use a bit of more work as I'd like to see more upfront than behind the character haha. But amazing idea, wish the UI could have been mapped out better, maybe even placed into the world, where you make the choices up front. Also would be nice to have a "save" state, maybe it's permanent but something that doesn't let the player go below the tile on accident. Could also be a first person perspective. Lots of potential for some mind blowing mechanics and visuals!

Hey guys ! 👋🏽
Thanks a bunch for all your feedback. We really appreciate it. We apologize for any parts that didn’t work right or felt uncomfortable.

This was the first we came together BF and GF as a team for a project. And for me personally, I was diving into many things for the very first time.
It is really unfinished 😂 We realize it's still a work in progress. We’re hoping to spend more time on it and definitely consider all your feedback to make improvements.
Thanks for being understanding and patient with us!

You are making good. Nice graphics but of course you need to work here more on next jam I think you can take easier concept

Very clever idea! The settings in the top right were kinda small for me though. I would have liked them to be larger

Interesting idea! Took me a couple of tries to get it but it was smooth sailing afterwards. There's still a lot of potential for more mechanics but its impressive how much content was finished for the jam! Great entry!

Nice idea! I enjoyed the reasoning for why the graphics were downgraded! I was able to beat the game by just setting my chunk size to 1 and everything was fine unfortunately. But very nice game overall!

Cool idea!

Limited RAM space causing limited walking space. This is really expanding the theme to a meta dimension!

The idea behind the game is brilliant! But the controls and figuring out what to do was difficult.

The most important question is, what grade should I give to the graphics :D an excellend idea, can see a big market potential in it. We need a full puzzle level design around it. And a story. Maybe something slightly meta. But now I'm rambling,,, the menu art is really pretty

Great idea, but I was confused to play(

Very creative design! Because of limited space, only some platforms can be selectively used. But I noticed that I only need to increase the rendering distance and plan the route and then decrease the rendering distance to load all types of platforms near me, which may reduce the strategy of the game. In short, I LOVE THIS IDEA!

Very interesting game. I took some time to understand the relationship between memory and objects and successfully played it. Honestly, it reminded me of the days when I learned about terrain editors. (Especially those tiny resource names in the top right corner that are almost invisible.)

I look forward to seeing further improvements on this game! Welcome to play our game and please leave a review and rating!(*^▽^*)

Very nice idea. I enjoyed playing with the rendering distance and objects.
Had some problems using my widescreen monitor. Wondowed mode would have been great. Also jumping is kind of finniky. I died often because it didn't register my buttonpress.

Other than that a cool game with nice graphics and a awesome idea!

Great take on the theme. Nice aesthetic despite the "low settings". Enjoyed the game although I didn't find I had to do much turning things off/on to reach the end.

This is most unique idea I have seen so far. Good job! Game itself is standard gamejam-jank, no real issues here, though no really polished gameplay either.

Seems fun to try, sadly I'm on macOS and there is no macOS or Web builds available. No low scores from me though, so don't worry, it's a game jam after all and there's only so much you can do :)

A very meta idea for sure, leaning into the ram space. I had a really hard time getting a hang on the controls though.
And a way to soft close the game would be appreciated in the future.
Congratulations on a good entry and a really innovative twist on the theme. Great job!

I got an error saying I was running low on ram..

..and what a clever way to start a game. Had fun playing this - really clever way of working the theme into a platformer. Very innovative! :) Super job

This game was a super creative take on the `limited space` theme. The settings at the top right were super small and I had missed them at first which led to me just running around for a while.

Other than that, great game!

this was the funniest thing I've seen here.. I didn't expect the twist with RAM at all. good work

I think this is a really unique idea with a lot of potential.

The execution, however, leaves some things to be desired:
- It took me a while to realize that the top right menu was an actual gameplay element and not a debugging tool. Could it be integrated into the map itself somehow? Switching between running through the map and the menu felt unnatural and slow. It made the game less fun for me.
- Because of that, I had an urge to just set the menu once and roll with it - and I actually succeeded by lowering the rendering distance, which makes the other options look too difficult and fiddly. In other words, rendering distance is overpowered

I can see the potential and with good level design and a smoother mechanism for controlling the game fidelity instead of the menu, this could be a great puzzle game. In case you decide to continue developing it, good luck! I think it could be hard to get it right, but it might be well worth it.

Great work pulling this off!

Cool idea! If there are bugs you can always blame them on limited RAM space.
I was a little lost at the beginning but it was easier with the chunk distance to 1.
Good job!
