Limited Space , Rod Humble, Ludum Dare 54 by rodvik

[raw]
made by rodvik for Ludum Dare 54 (JAM)

2D Turn based life rescue game. A star is going supernova which will wipe out all life nearby. 4 AI life arks travel the stars and take on board the doomed life forms. After 8 turns the star goes supernova and the Arks which have the highest life scores win. Each Ark has 4 slots. Life comes in 9 types.

Score +2 for alien types that either match or are sequential in adjacent storage slots to the right of it; non-matching neighbors score -1. Empty slots do not count.

Coded in C++ using openframeworks entirely during the compo, comes with 20 mins of music I made during the compo. Pads and sequenced flutes, Ableton Live 11, 2d key art made using Microsoft Image Creator during the compo, over 900 text based alien life entries written during the compo.

Source code and all assets included within the zip file.

Enjoy have fun, love you all Rod

If you prefer to play or rate just the text based version you can delete all the jpgs in the data folder and the code handles it fine. See attached screenshot.

Love to you all.

Interesting idea, feels like a card game of some sort. The type/matching/stacking mechanic wasn't totally clear, and felt a little too luck based waiting for another (2) to show up. Great work on the assets!

@rodvik JSYK, according to the rules, games using AI generated assets aren't eligible for the compo, and must be submitted as a Jam entry. See here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/54

The rules were quite confusing, maybe it would be good to provide an example with the calculations shown.

The creature descriptors were quite lengthy and unnecessary when looking for numbers. Maybe if you changed the rules to something involving the descriptions, like their value is not shown but can be obtained depending on the amount of verbs (or something) in the description.

My general feedback would be to replace the text and numbers with UX Design study; iconography, and images. So that the game doesn't feel so visually overwhelming.

Very good idea. I liked! :D
