RoboRage by Kr4sh3

[raw]
made by Kr4sh3 for Ludum Dare 54 (JAM)

RoboRage.gif Make your way to the top of the map by upgrading yourself using items at forges. Be sure to make use of the forge's inventory as your inventory has very limited space! Shooting down right after jumping will make your jump go higher. Upgrading your power will and fire rate will allow you to propel yourself higher and further! Jump on enemies (Hold Jump to jump higher after jumping on them) to jump even higher! Leave a comment if you find the cake

Controls:

Left Mouse - Shoot

WASD - Move + Aim (Hold w or s to shoot up and down)

how am i supposed to get gears? i pretty much only got screws? pretty interesting but i got stuck on the second jump. took me a while to figure out i needed to jump on the guy but i got hurt the first time trying that. maybe a bug? maybe i landed on the wrong spot? idk.

A bit hard to control, and maybe too big hitbox for the player.
Pretty nice art!

Cool game with interesting ideas, but sadly I can't progress after the first check points.
Also i encountered a forge with no resources to spend besides screws, maybe i did something wrong? I feel like an upgrade is necessary...

Pretty hard to control too, maybe make the shooting direction following the mouse? Shooting down while jumping and moving is a bit overwhelming, for me at least :)

Managed to finish it, I like the difficulty and platforming, but I think the problem with this game is the grinding. Constantly having to stop platforming to collect the necessary parts to progress got annoying. Reducing the requirements for upgrades would've helped, as the length of this game felt very artificial. Also, spikes insta-killing felt unfair, but I appreciate dropping your inventory on death so it didn't bug me too much.

Other than the grinding, the art and music was definitely nice, and the platforming was very creative, good job!

Oh god this cost so much time to get used to the control. I like the cool pixel art and the sound. But just so hard to make some progress, and collecting and upgrading is a bit boring. Some part really need good reaction and several tries. Without the curiousity for the cake I will never made it to the end. But is the cake a lie?╰(‵□′)╯![屏幕截图 2023-10-04 215735.png](///raw/f76/b5/z/5f955.png)

@xett Thanks! Planning to reduce the amount of grinding in an update. I was running out of time near the end so I kinda just ended up randomly setting the amounts of resources without testing how much was actually too much.

@nanamaki Thank you! Sorry about the grind! Ran out of time to test so the amounts were set kinda randomly. P.S. The cake is not a lie, its somewhere in the starting room :3

A nice idea but I found the controls to be a bit frustrating, especially the shooting down to jump. The shooting as well was a bit hard to use. Maybe you could make it so the the mouse aims and make the bullets last a lot longer? The enemies were quite spongy too. I liked the idea of having a very small inventory but if the crafting requirements were reduced and your movement speed was faster then I think the grinding wouldn't be so bad.

Great drawings! graphic style is really consistent and coherent. though the game is bit hard for me

also there is potential for improvement in movements.

I really liked the retro style of RoboRage! The upgrade mechanic had a special touch, but I felt that the grinding part could be a little too much at times. Even so, the sound and dynamics of the game are top notch. Congratulations on the work!

This is a strangely addicting gameplay loop! Once I got the hang of the controls and movement, seeing how much farther I could push my abilities at each enemy spawner was a fun time. I do agree with previous comments that it sometimes took a bit too long to get all the relevant upgrades, and the platforming can feel a bit brutal with the spikes, but I enjoyed my time with the game! Good work!

The style is great and I loved the graphics, it felt very complete, I particularly loved how quickly the instructions were conveyed. That being said, the fundational mechanic of shooting down to boost the height had a very limited time space to be effective, and it was really important to use. The vairance of height of jumps made what was otherwise a fun platformer into a furstrtating experience. The upgrading felt great even if it made grinding become part of the game. Really enjoyed it.

Nice graphics and mechanics here!

I think this game has potential to be much more.

Anyway, it's a very complete game for a 72h jam. Of course it's a work to be proud of.

Well done!

A tough but fun game! Getting used to the platforming is the most difficult part, but when you figure out the timing, its satisfying to hit those multi-jump combos! If the game gets made to be longer, maybe drawing out the learning curve might make it easier for players. ALSO, funny glitch, you can time your jumps to jump off of spikes, treating them like floors. It's very funny. Love the music and art, and overall had a great time. Thank you for the great experience! :)

I really beatiful and interesting game!! But since the move controls are WASD, the jump is on the Space key and the attack is on mouse, I found it difficult to play, at some point, my hand was hurting...

Maybe if the jump key was on W or if the attack button was on the keyboard it was more comfortable to play :)

Also, i couldn,t make any upgrades on the checkpoint... Idk if it was just me, or if it really is a bug ^^
