You boot up your good old trusty 90's PC, only to find the hard-drive is almost entirely fragmented! Using the limited space you have left on your hard-drive, you download a handful of helpful programs to help reclaim your drive once and for all.

---

Controls

DEFRAG-MENTOR can be controlled entirely with your mouse! Use LMB to click buttons, and click and drag the top of most windows to move them about.

--- Engine: Godot Spritework: Aseprite Header Image: GIMP

Due to me being busy for a lot of the weekend, I ended up only having an evening and a morning to make this. Given the extreme time constraints, I'm quite relieved I managed to make this in time! I hope you enjoy DEFRAG-MENTOR!

Fun! This had a cool twist on the theme, and great visuals! Speaking of theme, the computer theming of the game felt unique, and fit the genre really well. If you were to continue working on this, I'd recommend adding as much juice to the game as you possibly can, make the bullets bigger, and make the anti virus hit their targets a bit better. Also moving your windows during a match can be a bit overpowered in the early game, but balances itself out pretty quickly.
Good job!

I thought this was cute and well put-together for a compo!! Great job. Maybe consider adding a "close" button to the window with the tutorial text? I accidentally started defragging before I figured out how to close the window (you have to hit a button on the task bar???) and played the first 20 seconds of the game with teh giant tutorial window in the way

The concept is clever but it's really difficult to find a placement where the antivirus shooter can actually hit the viruses before they move positions and out of the firing line. For limited time, well done!

Extremely realistic, that's exactly how it felt to use a computer in the 90s. Thank you sir for bringing back the good ol' days!

In the beginning there's too little action. I love my tower defence games to look like a proper bullet hell - makes things more exciting! I got more of that towards the end. I like how you can move your antivirus around, it's a refreshing idea - wish it was used a little more. Right now it's required only at the very beginning (and when something sneaks through later on. It's a solid game, good job :)

Really fun idea fitting the theme, love it! It wasn't too hard so I could finish it which is always great :-)
The mine sweeper felt a bit useless? Or maybe the anti-virus are just good enough so I didn't need them.

I found the game breaking over powered strat :D stacking all towers on top of each other and moving them together as one and just letting it hover over the enemies and destroy them.

very nostalgic, the sounds are like music to my ears, i love the old-school implementation and all in all a very genuine tower defense game, awesome stuff!

I find that the theme is a little more discreet, but overall it is well done

very fun, i always like interestingly themed TDs, being able to move everything on the fly is a very cool and works perfectly in the concept

A fun little TD! The gameplay reminded me a lot of the early BTD games (before they got as complicated as the newer ones). The 90s PC theme was very fun, and I really like the attention to detail you gave with the towers being their own "windows" you could minimise.

Neat idea, I really liked how you made all the windows actual windows you could drag around! The gameplay was fun and felt well balanced for a jam game...I got to the end of the game but it didn't seem too easy (although I'm usually not good at tower defense games so maybe that does mean it's too easy  ) Would have been nice to have even more variety in helpful "programs" to install but understandable given the time constraints!

Cool spin on tower defense. I like that you can move the windows around freely. I wish I could uninstall an antivirus to reclaim space, but that's just because the Windows Desktop theme worked so well!

Not bad! I like the aesthetic, although I wish there were more animations to make things feel more lively. I also feel like there wasn't much of an incentive to buy anything other than the 10KB antiviruses. You can put them directly on the track so that they always make their shots. Maybe if that were disallowed and the mines were a little cheaper, that might encourage buying more of the alternative options.

A lovely tower defence game ^^ I love that you can stack the towers to create a death machine, but it gets kinda easy once you realize the towers still shoot when you are dragging them around. Still, it was nice to play from start to finish ^^

Nice take on the tower defense theme! The old Windows look is effective. The game was easy to beat, thanks to a lack of restrictions on tower placement, which is a little strange considering the theme

Nice tower defense game. I managed to make it all the way down to 0%. Being able to stack and move the anti-virus made it a little easy.

Honestly, super cool, especially with the time constraints.

Really cool use of the theme! I liked how unlike most tower defense games, you can move the towers which introduced some fun maneuvering (also cool that the old windows theme went hand in hand with that mechanic seeing as you can move windows like in an actual computer). The minimal sounds worked in the game's favor, I liked hearing the blips and boops when things got hit. Complaints were that the game felt shallow due to the lack of variety in the towers and enemies, which makes sense given the time constraints, and the game was a bit too easy, though it was fun stacking a bunch of towers and hearing a barrage of sound effects from the shooting. Overall, good job!

Although this isn't my type of genre, I had fun! Being able to move the blocks around was a fun mechanic. I don't know if explosions count for every time a pixel it it, but I often would sweep the explosion around in a group ahaha.

:) well done.

great game... the moment I realized that I can put antivirus on the road, the game was 1000x easier

well done

This is such a smart interpretation of the theme! The take on the tower defense genre was well executed too! I had a fun time playing this :D

I failed on the first level on my first playthrough. But when I read the comment above that compared it to a tower defense game, then I understood. And I was really getting into it! I always have lots of respect for people who complete the compo. Probably as others have said, some music would have been nice. I also found the game loop to be a bit long. I would feel like I was getting ahead, then fall behind, then get ahead again and it was never going to end.

Great concept and an interesting spin on the genre! First I couldn't figure out how to move the windows - maybe some highlighting would be helpful if the player has the mouse over the dragable area? Being able to stack and move the windows also felt a bit overpowered.
