Voidonaut by Jonathan Lorenz

[raw]
made by Jonathan Lorenz for Ludum Dare 54 (JAM)

Ok, so I overscoped again ... My plan was to make a simple shmup with a spaceship customization system, where you would have limited space to put ship parts that you would get by killing enemies. All of that in 3 days, it's possible, right?

Voidonaut_screen1.jpg

Well, turns out the "simple shmup" part took me 2 of the 3 days, so I got 1 day left for the garage system. Which obviously wasn't enough.

So yeah, you can customize your ship ... but the differents parts doesn't have any effect, wich isn't what I had in mind. I wanted to have the different parts changing the stats of the spaceship, and taking a certain amount a space. + have them drops from ennemies ...

Oh well, after more than 10 LD I still underestimate the amount of work I can do if I also want to sleep during the LD.

That's the story. A ok-ish game, but hey, at least I participated and learned intersting things! Maybe next time I won't overscope, one can always dream ...

Cheers!

I had fun with the game. The customization was a great feature that I didn't expect. The game doesn't represent the Theme but overall a fun polished game.
Also I noticed that in the start menu you have mistakenly indicated that the game is for Ludum Dare 45.

Don't be so hard on yourself! The shmup part is fun and I like the music! Of course, using your score to unlock new parts that make you shoot or move faster would have tied it all better together, but that's the learning experience. :)

Difficult to judge. It's not super bad, but it's also clear that this is not what you wanted to make. Overall a okay little jam game.

Haha I feel you on the overscoping. But I kinda see where you would want to go with this. The core shmup loop is there, good use of external assets to create a general mood. I'd say it's decent work for a 1-man team doing quite a number of things.

Music is cool. but I didn't hear any sfx you can use SFXR to make sfx in a hurry. We clearly see lack of time you have a small syntax error on the menu LD45 -> LD54.

Overall decent game, wish there was more enemy types and the enemies also move in a weird way.

I agree, don't be to hard to yourself. The game is fun! There is music and sound, and some progression with the enemies moving faster over time. You did a good job.

I noticed that sometimes no more enemies spawn, but you have to wait and idle a bit until you can finish the level.

Great sound track, kept the game going for a bit after the enemies stopped spawning to vibe, handling of the spaceship was solid as well, it doesnt always go as plan when doing game jams, still an impressive entry.

Hey... it's a cool concept! And beautiful graphics : ))
You know... I'd wish if such a game is turned into something like Hell Fire (an old Sega) game - these graphics with something like Hell Fire gameplay .. that would be awesome! Just an idea :P

And as others mentioned - seriously, it's cool! Don't worry about it being short - build up on that **super solid and good-looking core**! Make it longer. Add sound effects. Make the ship have different fire modes or sth. Maybe create a fully-random (or pseudo-random) level/s. Add level decoration / solid elements.

One tip: *don't be an extreme perfectionist!*. I can feel you are somewhat of one ;)
And... *make a plan and execute it*.

Good luck, it's a beautiful start : )))

Pros:
* Customization system seemed pretty well fleshed out.
* Game was quite a lot of fun! I've always had a soft spot for high score-type games, and this one is yet another good timewaster.
* Controls were very straightforward and easy to pick up; it's among the few games on here that I've been able to immediately get the hang of on launch.
* UI and visuals were simple and very well handled.

Cons:
* The gun sound effects were very drowned out and hard to hear; I think the music should be reduced in volume to accommodate them.
* After each round, my ship always seemed to randomize its layout; it led to me thinking on various occasions that my customization wasn't saving.

Bugs:
* After driving into a black hole, the blue jet flame is still controllable long after the rest of the ship loses its ability to move.
* Shooting mechanic is vulnerable to autoclickers.

Overall a fun little high score game! I wouldn't be too hard on yourself about the overscoping; happens to the best of us.

We've all been there running out of time after doing the basics. But I thought the title screen and hangar presentation were pretty good and the music popped. For a critique I think I would have slowed down the enemy bullets but increased the quantity, but thats really just personal preference.

I really enjoyed this game, the graphics and the atmosphere are really good. The garage is gorgeous and the fight part is very nervous, I would like to see more in this direction.
Keep up the good work 🙂👍

It's funny that we had a similar idea for this game jam 😉 ... and run similar problems 😄 but I admit I smashed the schedule even more and turned to the extra category 🫣

Cool game! I really enjoyed the music. The aesthetics and effects work nicely together and look really good :). I was a little suprised that I didn't take damage when the wings got hit, think it would be interesting if the ship I designed impacted the hitbox as well. The game plays smoothly, good job! I think it definitely can be a satisfying shoot-them-up once more level progression are included in the future. Solid entry~

With a base this solid I can only imagine how polished and fun to play a full version would be. You did a good job, the graphics look great and the shooter section was simple but fun.

The SID Chip music sounds good and the 3D models in the garage look cool. It'd be great if it were longer, so hopefully you keep working on this. Also, I was able to make a ship that kinda looked like Gradius's Vic Viper, and that's always a plus.
