Happy Lockin' by Srynetix

[raw]
made by Srynetix for Ludum Dare 54 (COMPO)

Welcome on my 8th Ludum Dare Compo entry!

Initially, I wanted to play with Godot Engine 4.2 (version dev 5), and it mostly worked for the first 24 hours.
But during sunday morning, as I was playing with the TileMap, almost all of my tile colliders just disappeared / were buggy with no reason at all (I think it has something to do with tile rotations, which does not exist in 4.1.1).
Well then, I migrated the project to version 4.1.1, added more tiles to my tileset, redrew the buggy tiles, and everything was good!

So, the game! This time, I wanted to do something more... moody.

My personal take on the "limited space" theme : you are limited in your movements, and at the same time, you are trapped.

I imagined an action/stealth game, where you need to escape from where you are kept. To do that, you will have to find all the keys, remove your enemies, and above all avoid the dreaded security scanner. So be careful, be quick, and collect them all if you want to leave.

Watch out for the secrets. :wink:

Software used: - Game Engine: Godot Engine 4.1.1 with my sxgd plugin collection, - "Art": GIMP then Krita, - Sound effects and music track: FL Studio, plus a few custom processed stock samples

Good luck, and have fun!

Special notes

The game should work on a relatively recent Chrome. If you have troubles with the Web game, use the Desktop game. You can also try to play the game on itch.io: https://srynetix.itch.io/happy-lockin

I tried to play the web version on GitHub but I'm just getting a quick loading bar then an endless rotating loading symbol. Just letting you know in case it's something more people face!

Basic gameplay, but had fun exploring the map and finding all the secrets. Content is king. Well done!

Score: 100% in 507s :-)

Thanks for the feedback, sadly it happens with Godot 4 games when exporting to HTML :slight_frown: I only tested the game on the latest Google Chrome on Windows 11 (and it works great).
You can also try my game on itch.io to see if it works better: https://srynetix.itch.io/happy-lockin
If not, you can still try the game using the desktop version :sweat_smile:

@xinux Thanks :)

Solid gameplay loop! Would have like a way to "accelerate" the scanning while i was in a safe location.
The mood is there!

Fun but scary game! I like to find new places to hide and explore territory around them. But I still awere of red circle ater closing the game few minutes ago.

Absolutely smitten with the concept of this game! It's like a captivating maze, and the graphics only add to its allure. 🎨 Just a small thought: perhaps consider shortening the scan time a tad? It might make the gameplay feel a bit snappier. Regardless, I had a blast navigating through!

@matthieu-riboulot Thanks! :smile:
Well you can still run fast to the next safe place instead of waiting :smirk:
Curious to hear about your best time scores!

This game is fun and fast paced I like the effects that you used and the secret room HI lol. It was pretty easy

@janinna21 Glad you liked it! Funny you want to shorten the scan, initially it was at 10 seconds instead of 15, and I thought it was too stressful / it didn't let you enough time to fully explore the game :sweat_smile:
Maybe adding some kind of difficulty setting lowering life points and scan time could be fun for the more hardcore players :smile:

Played in browser an genuinely enjoyed this one. I have to say, the layered music makes it! I love the way it starts simple and then adds to the tension as it builds. Really nice work. fun game!

Very nice and polished game. I especially like the music and sound effects. The red flashing effect of the scanning is a bit too intense though, but adding a "toggle flashing lights" accessibility feature to a ludum dare game might be a bit out of scope ;)

Didn't manage to collect all the keys, but had fun and the challenge was nice. Just wish there was some way to heal though.
Nice game!

@poopgames Thanks! :smile:

@designernap Thanks! Glad you liked the music, didn't have much time for this one sadly.

@likirus Thanks! Yeah just as I was releasing the game I was thinking I should have put an alert for flashing lights... Will definitely consider it the next time. :sweat_smile:

@oleg20111511 Thank you! The enemies are slow to shoot but they don't miss. :stuck_out_tongue:
Didn't have time for heal items, I wanted to put them in the secret zones. Maybe next time!

It's a nice little game. If found 2 secrets but got a score of 97 % so that's nice.
I really liked the attention to details with the sound of the scanner getting louder has it get closers.

I wish the caracter was more centered though. Sometimes you move a long way to one direction and you see nothing in front of you.

Overall a simple but fun game. Keep up the good work :smile:

Fun! There are a bunch of different ideas here, and I think they work well together. The music did a lot to set the mood, and was fun to listen to. There were a few places where I wanted to use the bouncing bullet mechanic to get an enemy from afar, but the bullets rarely ever seemed to reach, unfortunately.

@harksa Thanks! Good job for the 97% you were close. :smile:
For the camera, you mean when you go fast? I'll keep that in mind, that's the camera smoothing which is _too smooth_.

@henk Thank you! I hesitated a lot for the bullet behavior, I finally made them bounce one time then vanish. Maybe using a delay before vanishing instead of a bounce count would be better.

Pretty cool! It was definitely moody. I didn't beat it but the scanner is a cool mechanic.

Tried it a couple times and this was my best time with 100%. The best part to me is the wall running. I'm wondering if that was a bug that you just left in cause it was cool or if that was purposefully put in haha!

The tension between trying to make it to the next safe spot or waiting it out is really magnified when you are trying to get a good time. I wonder if putting in a "Hard Mode" that puts a timer on the game would have made more people try it out that way.

Great Job!

@phlip45 Thank you!
You got it right. :smile: The wall run is a "bug" I left on purpose because it's a great mechanic when trying to get a good time (when colliding with the walls I add the collision response to the current movement).
Good job for your score. :wink: Good idea for the hard mode or just showing the timer on the game screen.

Really nice work on a balanced and interesting game. The mechanics are fun and easy to learn without being too repetitive. The sound effects dd a nice atmosphere but are perhaps a slight bit too loud. The music was the highlight of the game for me.

Whew, this is quite a long game with a full reset; I got to about 7 keys but never found a way to heal so each of the enemies hitting me a couple of times eventually took me out. I did find two of the three secrets, and hi to you too! 🙋‍♀️ I liked the way the scanner made me feel like playing safe, but the timer made it so that I still pushed myself out of my comfort zone.

Sweet game! Fun and intense gameplay magnified by the scanner and field of view circle. I definitely feel the stealth spy vibe, nice sound design. The increased speed when running into walls felt highly random, but fit way better with the gameplay than I though! Especially when I saw the timer..

I see now that it was a bug turned feature, love it :smile:

Bullets bouncing was also an inspiring mechanic, would've liked to see a version where it got more focus! Could be with enemy design or level design (ex puzzles to get to keys).
Speaking of bullets I did find it difficult to see the enemy bullets, which made it hard to react and dodge. Making them clearly another color from the player would help.

That's my two cents, thanks for the game!
