Kefnac, the Word Grid Game by Greytyphoon

[raw]
made by Greytyphoon for Ludum Dare 54 (COMPO)

kefnac cover image.png A silly game about placing words on a grid, and somehow always running out of space.

Drag words to the grid, reach every corner, and win! When you get the hang of it, use the options to make it harder!

⚠️ It seems not to work on mobile at all, despite my (admittedly limited) attempt. For now, the best way to enjoy the game is with a mouse.

Solved it!

I always suck at word games because I simply don't know words, so its nice to have a list of possible words  Its still hard for me to strategically place words, but its very satisfying when I can place multiple words back to back by chance. Glad that there is no timelimit, makes the game pretty relaxing. Nice entry!

Not bad! First attempt took me 12 minutes.

You *might* want to consider a blacklist/whitelist on the word generation? Not a big deal, but having the game serve up a curse word in the first setup does colour its impression a little. Seems like you know the direction placement is a little finicky, but it's perfectly playable.

Overall pretty fun, and it's nice to have options to tweak for multiple plays.

@oadt and @ace17, thank you so much, I'm glad you had fun!

@tjm, uh, woops? I'll try to trim the offensive words, yeah, it didn't happen in my playtests somehow and slipped my mind. Thanks for the comment and the review :)

Nice little game :)
Might want to add that the invalid ways to place a word are not actually used.

This was quite fun. I enjoy word games and it definitely carried the "Limited Space" theme well

Very fun! I love word games and enjoyed playing this one very much.

Maybe it would be even better with some challenges: like fill the square using no more than X words, or with Y threshold for word disappearing. I think that would increase replayability.

Good job!

Fun! Could feel a bit shallow at times, but was well-implemented. Always love to see word-game concepts in LD.

Another grid-based puzzle game! This is cool, it's weird but it does feel difficult when english isn't your first language, even though the words are spelled right there in the box it just feels like it would be easier if I was just more familiar with all of them. Definitely a very interesting game though, great job!

I enjoyed your game! Some tricky moments to find something that fits but never got stuck; felt like there is strategic play and not just luck. I like the unique "color the grid" goal for something like this too. Lots of potential!

I managed to clear the grid! Super fun little game. I always found it kind of weird when I could create words via adjacency that weren't words. It always felt kind of "wrong"

Also, it was pretty finnicky trying to place words where I wanted them.

With some minor adjustments, I bet this could be a satisfying grid based time killer similar to minesweeper. Nice word game :)

It took me a few retries but then I finally managed to fill out the grid. Nice word puzzle.

Very good entry, nice variety of word games with simple and clear rules, easy to learn and fun to play.
There are some problems with drag and drop words, it is difficult to insert a word in the right direction, the word jump and blink in x/y axies. Sometimes words perfectly fit, highlight with green color, but it is not inserted. Anyway, the game process is enjoyable and i like this game.
Great job!

I got it on my first try! Pretty fun, interesting concept. I agree it might be more challenging with more strict Scrabble rules (e.g. no creating two-letter words that aren't real words by placing words next to each other).

I adore. I was looking for a wordle-like game to play. Nice entry!
