Diminutive Dungeon by Rose

[raw]
made by Rose for Ludum Dare 54 (COMPO)

A procedural puzzle game about two tiny heroes exploring a tiny dungeon. You can control both heroes yourself or play with a nearby friend!

See the game page on itch.io for more details about the game and instructions.

A note about audio: - I have opted out of the audio category. - Sadly, I ran out of time to add sound effects. - I've included background music from cgMusic, a music generation tool created in 2008. It's my understanding that this is ok to include in the compo as it's algorithmic rather than an AI/neural net generator. It's a bit unclear right now, but I have opted out of audio ratings, so feel free to ignore the music.

Nice game! This could easily be built upon to make a nice puzzler. Some points of feedback: There were no stakes, which made the game feel a bit boring at times. If I died, id just resurface with all my stuff, so I didn't have to think too hard. Resurfacing in general felt bad. I wanted to continue down until I couldn't, and the inventory system just felt like I died because I played well.
Aside from all that negativity, I loved the artstyle. The game was intuitive, the colors splitting what each character could do was fun. This is already pretty great. With some difficulty scaling as you go deeper, and some more variation in puzzles, and some more juice, this could be really engaging. Hope your game does well!

Great game! I really enjoyed playing it. I bought all the upgrades and I liked that they changed a bit the way of playing. I only once had an unsolvable level which is actually great for a procedural generation system developed in such short time. Some of them were really tricky and fun to solve. I like the graphics - very clean and readable. The music fits perfect. Congrats!

Cute game! It's super tiny so well in the theme. Levels are overall interesting, and there is quite a lot to unlock. Graphics are sweet too.

About music, sadly you are not supposed to use AI generated stuff in compo *"NOTE: Please submit games built with AI generators as Jam or Extra games, and not the Compo (we’re still working on the new generators policy)"*. So maybe you can opt out of audio when the ratings are up ? Good choice tho, it fits the game.

Good job and thanks for the game!

This was great. The theme was fit perfectly with the cramped dungeon levels. I wish they were all solvable, but I understand how finicky proc-gen can be (hint: my game used it and it took up way too much of my time). The art is also super cute and cohesive. There's a lot of good subtle quality of life features like not letting the player drop down a hole *if* it would kill him. Great stuff!

Thanks for all the comments!

@crispypear I appreciate the detailed feedback!

@yorsh Thanks for pointing that out! Historically music generators (which aren't part of the recent "AI" wave) have been allowed in the compo, so I think I'm ok to use the music as background - but the rules are not very clear right now. Regardless, I have definitely opted out of audio ratings!

@rose Oh I didn't know that, so yeah that's confusing then. I whish I knew that before, music is not my favorite part ahah.

interesting game, but because of the randomness i found my self having to surface alot. most the time it was the thief getting stuck. i might have been doing something wrong, but i couldnt attack with the thief. other then that was an interesting game, i like how you did the surface and the little store. was fun to play over all nice job!

Very cute! I enjoyed wandering around and coordinating both guys - solo works well. No real plot other than getting all the goodies, but that's satisfying. Music and graphics are terrific. Nice work!

Very cool concept, and nice execution! It was fun trying to find the best way to get through each room with minimal damage and the most chests. The upgrade system is nice as well, and gives some motivation to keep going. I like that you can chain reaction pushing a rock into another rock- nice attention to detail. Also, the elegance of managing two characters with the two control schemes is very good!

Also, I found a glitch where attempting to move during/right after (?) room transitions causes a character to become stuck, and forces you to surface, although that's not so bad.

Really good job on this one! Even though the levels were procedurally generated I felt like they were mostly solvable. I also really like the idea of controlling both characters as one player and using their strengths to help each other.

Gosh I love procedural content in jam games, that's always so cool. It's compo, you know there's plenty you could have elaborated on if you had more time. I think it's a good idea and well executed and just the right bite-size for a jam and folks that are really into the genre will be rewarded with plenty of content

It's rare to encounter this pretty and finalized combo game, I played it with a friend and had quality time. I'd love to see more multiplayer games in Ludum Dare, a good choice. Updates were nice and brought something new in the game after you already thought it was becoming repetative

This is solid. Definitely potential to expand after jam. My only (very minor) complaint is that I wanted the dungeons to get harder with greater rewards as I went down. Really fun, thanks!

I liked the game, and played until I had everything. Perhaps it could have been more punishing of failures, but that might have made me give up sooner. The difficulty curve felt backwards, since things get easier as you get upgrades, maybe the things on deeper floors should do more damage?

Whoooooooooo I did it!!! This was super cute, and I was surprised at how quickly I got used to controlling both characters. I would love to try to speedrun this, quickly handling both characters at once rather than going back and forth between them.

Great game!

The graphics are good and intuitive, I didn't need to read the game description to understand what the different items and obstacles were for, despite the tiny sprites.

It's very satisfying to complete the levels without taking any damage, maybe a reward for achieving this could be an interesting mechanic.
With difficulty progression, this could be a really cool post-jam game.

Impressive to have made this game in such a short time. Great work!

very cool! would have loved a clear end or goal. Slightly sad that the challenge went down with the upgrades, instead of leading to different ones, but it was still fun!

Simple game but one of the better and more polished ones I've played. Everything comes together in a cohesive good experience.

Oh hey, what a super cute and sweet games !

Getting all the upgrades (minus the bag) was a pain in the ass lol, but really cool concept and game ! The randomly generated levels are almost always solvable, you chose every possible block nicely. Cute art, characters, and the upgrades and really well thought of, all of them are useful.

I wish dying gave you maluses and the dungeon got tougher as you went down in levels though, but as a COMPO you already have a looot of content ! Very polished too, love how you can play in coop and move both characters with the arrow keys.
